Vehicle Detail

1985 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am TOJAN by Pontiac in association with Knudsen Automotive of Omaha, Nebraska. Relisted due to the unfortunate fact that the "winner" of the previous auction never even made contact...some people's kids! Tojans were made between 1985 and 1991 - not a kit car - according to an article in Classic Cars & Parts October, 2010, a total of only 123 coupes and 13 convertibles were produced over the seven model years. Suggested retail price of the Tojan GT Coupe was $28,995.00 - a tidy sum indeed back in 1985 - more than twice the price of a regular Trans Am. Back in 1985-1991 you could go into selected Pontiac dealers and order a Firebird Trans-Am TOJAN. They would drop ship the unmodified car to Knudsen Automotive of Omaha where modifications would be made including fiberglas hood, hatch, front fenders and rear fenders; a 24 ct gold plated hood ornament; burled walnut dash and center console; full digital instrumentation; Gale Banks suspension package; leather wheel, shift knob and brake handle. Optional Turbo Rear Wing added to this one ($1,295.00 option) I believe this to be a three owner vehicle. Purchased by me back in 2003 from the second owner who owned it for roughly two years. Has had, I believe, one repaint by the second owner back in 2001, roughly 8,000 miles ago. New P245/50R16 Goodyear Eagle HP tires and 16"x8" American Racing wheels by the second owner back in 2002 at roughly 84,000 miles...wheel locks and key included. New starter in 2004 at 88,000 miles. New battery last month - August 2013. New complete exhaust system including catalytic converter in 2003 at 87,000 miles. Complete brake overhaul including new rotors front and rear in 2003 at 87,000 miles. Runs and drives great. Mileage now is 92,686 miles Drove it to work and back when I first got it but soon grew tired of explaining what it was everytime I parked it. Also got tired of people snapping pictures on the freeway and other drivers revving up at the stoplights. I'm way too old for all the attention it brings. Exterior: I believe it has had one repaint. When repainted, the second owner elected not to do the original blackout treatment on the rockers, the front spoiler and the sail panels behind the door glass. I think it looks better without, but it could be added at anytime. Chipguard was added along the rockers and the lower front and rear panels. Paint has a small filled-in chip about half the size of a dime at left sail panel behind the left door glass (pictured) Some overspray areas on the inner body around the engine compartment and rear hatch areas that would look better if jam painted red or blacked out (pictured). Some rust at lower rear corners of the stock steel doors where ground effects are fastened on (pictured). Fog/driving lights are missing from the front lower spoiler. Mounting hardware and wiring is still present so they could be added if desired. First owner may have preferred the air scoop look to the fog/driving light look or he may have damaged the original fog lights backing out over a low curb since one bracket is actually bent (pictured). A few chips around the headlight area. The left headlight needs adjustment since it sometimes sticks closed. It pops up when the manual headlight knob is spun slightly and continues to work properly for several weeks. Interior: Carpet looks good. Seats look good - wear beginning on the driver seat outside bolster (pictured) New headliner in 2004. Tiny hole in driver side visor. A couple of small spots on the right rear seat cushion. The burlewood dash/console accents have cracking and flaking in the clear finish. I sanded the long piece in front of the passenger side and the wood underneath is nice and without cracks (pictured). I did not add a finish clear coat...will leave that up to the new owner when he or she re-does the remaining pieces. The tilt wheel column is loose (typical for these F-bodys) and would benefit from a quick disasembly and the two (or better yet four) screws to be loc-tited. I understaned that it is a $150 operation from a garage or can be done yourself as shown on a number of YouTube videos. I was going to do it myself and even went so far as to print out the "how to" instructions and buy the needed Steering Wheel Lock Plate Tool. Instructions and tool will be included in the auction. The car is perfectly drivable as is but the looseness is kind of annoying. The radio lights up does not work. I have a replacement purchased on ebay supposedly from an '85, but it needs the connecting plug changed for some reason. It is untested. The digital dash lights up. The speedo, tach and fuel gauges work properly. The volts, oil pressure and water temp gauges light up but do not give any readings. It may be something as simple as a loose sending unit or dash plug or something more complicated. It is my understanding that Knudson Automotive still works on their digital dashes. I have an analog dash cluster from an '85 that will be included. Another ebay purchase, the analog dash is untested and I have not had the Tojan's dash apart to see if replacing the digital dash is a simple plug-in job or, in all probability, something more complicated. Again, the speedo, tach and gas gauges work so the car is driveable as it sits. The stock Pontiac small plastic door lock interior slides in the door are missing. That is the little plastic piece that goes over the metal hook (pictured). Also missing is a flat interior trim piece behind the door pull as pictured (or maybe it is just a piece of black cardboard??). You can manually lock and unlock by moving the hook or you can lock/unlock using the power switch. The passenger side power window is slow moving. The spare tire cover needs the three small twist screws that hold it in place (pictured). Cover stays in place without them but they could be added at some point. Space saver spare, cannister, jack and handle assembly are present, but I haven't had the patience to properly mount everything in the spare tire well, so the jack and handle assembly are sitting loose in the trunk. A Chilton General Motors Firebird 1982-1992 repair manual will also be included Mechanicals: Runs nice, drives great. New tires and wheels in 2002 at 83,000 miles...wheel locks and key included. Right rear tire valve stem sticks open when checking tire pressure - so have a needlenose handy...or replace or tighten the screw-in air valve. Tires never loose air so never bothered to fix it...I know I sound really lazy...but the wife has me remodeling the house room-by-room so just have not had the time to do the little details. New exhaust and brakes back in 2003 at 87,000 miles. New ball joints and drag link in 2002 at 85,000 miles Air conditioning does not work...I think it is the compressor rather than a recharge issue. Left valve cover has a small oil leak that drips on to the exhaust manifold and produces some smoke. This started when I put the slippery style oil in but has not happened the last few start-ups. In short, a nice looking driveable potential future classic that can be restored to perfection while still being driven and enjoyed. PayPal $500 deposit within 48 hours, balance within 7 days. I would like the vehicle picked up within 2 weeks from the date of sale. Note: Vehicle is also for sale locally so, if a local sale happens and there are no ebay bids, I reserve the right to end the auction early. However, if there are ebay bids, I will let the auction go to completion and will not sell the car locally. So, if you plan on bidding, it would be best to at least place the minimum bid early on to ensure that the auction continues. Due to a non-paying bidder in a previous auction, I reserve the right to cancel bids I deem to be suspect.
