In its third generation, the famed Toyota bordered on supercar numbers and appearance, leaving a lasting impression on car nuts everywhere. In 1987, the Mk III Supra Turbo became one of the most exciting high-performance sports cars of its time. Not only was the Supra Turbo a sensible alternative to European exotics, it also became an aspirational car for a new breed of import enthusiasts who found the turbocharged inline-6 extremely easy to tweak for massive increases in horsepower. Sadly, original Mk III’s have largely disappeared. Because they are great highway commuters, most were driven into the ground while others succumbed to head gasket issues or were eaten alive by the merciless rust cancer. Tatty survivors were modified and raced by a new generation of “Fast & Furious” juveniles. But they will never be the same, 'cause a car is original only once. Nicely preserved original examples, true survivors that have never been restored, never needed restoration are highly sought after today. They are the ones true collectors lust for. It’d be a nice surprise to find an original example of the species that, despite being a quarter-century old, still sparkles and shines like the day it rolled off the showroom floor. The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of sports car enthusiasts. Such an amazing find is the miraculously well preserved Supra presented for auction here! This wonderful Mk III Turbo is as nice and as original as it gets. Still wearing nearly 100% of its factory applied paint, it never suffered from neglect or corrosion and is as virginally preserved as one could hope for. In November 1987, VIN *JT2MA71J2J0086467* left the Tahara factory gates in Aichi, Japan and sold new at Longo Toyota in El Monte, CA. Having been loved and cherished by only 2 local owners (me being the second) in the affluent suburbs of Orange County, this 1988 Supra has led a charmed life ever since. I’ve been a car collector for nearly 40 years and if you look at my feedback, you’ll see that I’ve owned a few interesting cars. 15 years ago, I saw this Supra for sale by a mature physician who lived nearby. Understanding the added value in an exceptionally clean, low mile example, I happily paid top-dollar and tucked the car in my collection. Driven sparingly and otherwise treated like my one and child, it is (hands down) the best car I’ve ever owned. I will shed a tear when it sells to the highest bidder this Monday morning for 2 reasons: 1) My growing family is forcing the sale; otherwise I’d keep it forever. 2) Experts agree that original, Mark III Turbos are expected to triple in value over the next 5-10 years. (In recent years, lesser cars like the ’83 Datsun 280ZX T-Top Turbo have jumped to $15K) Let’s take a closer look now. Exterior: Always garaged and covered, you won’t find many cars of this vintage in such outstanding, original condition. The tapered front end, low hoodline and retractable headlamps (with individual washers) blend seamlessly into integrated bumpers. Freshly tinted glass all-around minimizes interior temperature and maximizes privacy. Removing the sport (targa) roof transforms this GT into an open-air experience; yet it’s carefully engineered aerodynamics minimizes bustling wind at higher speeds. While on the subject of higher speeds, the factory rear spoiler (exclusive to Turbo models) is not just for looks - but is an integral component to improved road handling. The immaculate body, trim and undercarriage not only speak volumes about the loving care this Supra has received but underscores its Southern California provenance. Last year, the right side was professionally repaired due to a MINOR mishap and about 5 years ago, the bumpers were refinished. Aside from that, the car is still wearing its factory original paint which has kept its deep luster. Please, keep in mind, it's 25-years-old and there are some small imperfections, namely a few scratches and rock chips in isolated places. Nothing to lose sleep over, though, as the finish displays a look not unlike finely patinated porcelain. Most importantly, there is absolutely NO evidence of rust, or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights. Laser straight panels and uniform gaps confirm its originality. This Mark III could serve as a true "reference car" at Supra Club gatherings. A straight body is a hallmark of unmolested originality. Pictures clearly show the clean lines and rust-free rocker panels of this elegant Supra. Surveying the car's straight and smooth coachwork today, we marvel at every minute detail. In fact, with little preparation, this fine example of the marque could be proudly displayed at a local car show or Concours d'Elegance. With 4 brand new Goodyear Eagle GT Radials mounted to 17” 5-Spoke alloys, (original 16” alloys also included) performance is enhanced and wheel detail is amazing. Speaking of detail, let me stress how straight the body is, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 5-year old, not a 25 year-old car. This one is that clean! Let's take a close look underneath. This original, unrestored Supra presents itself free of any kind of damage or corrosion. More important than shiny paint is a healthy undercarriage. Ol' Sherlock himself could inspect this car's belly with his magnifying glass and would not find an ounce of corrosion. Aside from normal seepage around the engine components, there are no major drips. Tie rod ends and bushings were recently replaced. Everything below is undamaged and tight! We'll inspect the interior next, shall we? The Supra’s interior presents itself 100% original. From the leather-covered, steering wheel to the plush carpet and velour bucket seats; everything is in wonderfully preserved state, without any cracks or dryness. From the 6 foot+ driver to pint-size pilots; every body type will enjoy extended trips in this the 8-way power seat with lumbar adjustment. The door panels, center console and sun visors are superbly preserved as well. This cockpit communicates the intoxicating look and feel of the quintessential 80’s sports car--the last really good one, if you ask the experts. The fascinating array of gauges and switches; including automatic climate control, tilt and telescoping wheel, cruise control, power windows, mirrors and door locks all actually work; including the clock. The upgraded, TOYOTA audio system with cassette, CD, power amp, 4 upgraded speakers and sub woofer guarantees pleasurable audio, even when traveling at speeds well above the double nickel. And the factory Air-Conditioning still blows ice cold. Buttons, handles, knobs and switches throughout the entire cabin show little (if any) wear. In the glove box you will find the original owner’s manuals from 1988, removal tool for the sport roof and the original Toyota Supra audio tape. Alright, let's lift the hatch and check out the rear storage compartment. Inside the clean, dry cargo area is enough room for both his & hers suitcases and golf clubs. Fold the seats down and the cargo space doubles! Bazooka EL Series sub woofer straps in here but doesn’t get in the way and is easily removable if more space is needed. The targa top is easily removed by loosening 4 fasteners with the original hex ratchet tool (included) and stores snuggly into the 4 mounting points in the rear cargo area. Lift the carpeted panel and you'll gain access to the original full sized spare which has never been on the ground. Original jacking equipment (never used) is preserved in the zipped canvas pouch. There's zero corrosion to be found in this critical area. A picture says more than a thousand words: this all original trunk is clean! Let's take a look under the hood. Engine & Mechanical: Raising the front hood reveals the silky smooth 6-cylinder power plant. This is a numbers matching drivetrain and is 100% factory correct, right down to its ancillaries, decals and markings. The C T26 turbocharged 7M-GTE engine was the flagship engine for Toyota. With DOHC and four valves per cylinder, it was Toyota's very first engine without a distributor, which utilized coil packs on cam covers and a cam position sensor just off the exhaust camshaft. Its power output measures 230bhp (172kW) at 5600rpm. Mated to the bulletproof A340E four-speed automatic brings this Supra to perfection. Less than 200 miles ago, the head gasket was replaced (by a certified mechanic) with new water pump, timing belt and hoses. Head gasket replacement every 10 years or 100,000 miles is considered a “maintenance item” on these 7M-GTE engines which are otherwise bulletproof. So this is one typical Mark III’s very costly expense that you will be spared. The engine starts quickly, idles very smoothly without any unusual noises. It's a bullet-proof drive train, built with long distance touring in mind, certainly provides more than sufficient agility to prevail on any U.S. highway. Beyond upper engine rebuild and routine tune-ups & services, thousands of dollars were invested over the years into preventative maintenance. No wear item was left unattended. As a result, this Supra is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Speaking of cosmetics, let us stress how straight the body is, how sparkling the chrome, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 5-year old, not a 25-year-old car. This one is that clean! Driving Experience: This elegant Supra runs, drives, handles, and stops excellently. The transmission shifts imperceptibly smooth. No overheating, smoke, nor untoward noises spoil the incredible fun. Characterized by turbine-smooth power delivery from idle to redline, the Supra Turbo experience is singularly exciting. The roomy cockpit featuring all the modern amenities such as power assisted steering, power ABS brakes and air conditioning; contribute significantly to the joy of piloting this Mark III Supra. With a lot of great mechanical technologies, such as Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension (TEMS) that give the driver two settings that alter the damper rates, a third setting is automatically activated at hard braking, high speed maneuvering, and WOT. Another innovative feature is the four channel ABS system, as well as the Acoustic Controlled induction System (ACIS), which is a way of managing the air compression pulses within the intake piping as to increase power. Double wishbones are employed on all four corners, the upper arms being made in forged aluminum to reduce weight, while the suspension links are attached to sub-frames to minimize vibrations entering the cabin. The 230-hp turbocharged 3.0 liter twin cam, 24 valve EFI engine coupled to a bulletproof 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, double wishbone suspension all-round and massive disc brakes at each corner is all the sort of hardware you’d expect in an expensive Italian GT. Amazingly, a bone stock Turbo is capable of running from zero to 60 mph in the mid-7-second range and gets over 20 MPG. Newer suspension components make handling in this Supra SUPERB with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. The newer Brembo brakes, calipers & rotors always stop the car in a straight line without a hint of fading. Overall, one could not envision a more satisfying, stress-reducing workout than a weekend getaway in this sexy machine. All in all, this Supra Turbo is a thoroughly convincing performer and a joy to drive! Here is a prime opportunity to acquire a fully-equipped, healthy, rust free, original, Mark III Supra, one of the World's finest and most pedigreed collectible automobiles. She's the proverbial California car; even 25 years old, she performs amazingly and looks as sexy as ever. To find another one like it would be nearly impossible, to restore a lesser one, a tedious and expensive undertaking.
