Built for the US from 1984 to ‘89, the 1st generation Toyota Van was certainly the most versatile, dependable and utilitarian “mini-van” of its time. Its powerful, fuel injected 4YE inline 4-cylinder motor gets over 20 MPG and has established Toyota’s reputation for building bulletproof machines. We love these vans because of their all round capability and versatility. It is very difficult to find a low buck (have you checked new van prices lately?) rig that will permit you to: 1) Drive it in city traffic each day 2) Camp comfortably anywhere 3) Carry all of your beloved outdoor toys 4) Get decent fuel economy 5) Go where you want to go, winter or summer. And do it all in such style. They go down the highway and into the woods in great comfort and won’t let you down if well maintained. Here’s a very comprehensive article on the Toyota Van found on a beloved web site:http://yotavans.org/community/tips/real_manual.html Here is slideshow on Photobucket of the original 1986 Toyota Cargo Van brochure: http://s746.photobucket.com/user/cars2k/slideshow/1986%20Toyota%20Van?sort=4 This Cargo Van is the “windowed” version which essentially has the same features and looks similar to the Passenger Van but is designed for carrying cargo. There are no second or third row seats and it has a 5-speed, manual transmission. It has front & rear A/C with power steering, tilt steering wheel and AM/FM Cassette Stereo. With its short wheelbase it can pull a U-turn on a dime and easily slips into any compact parking spot. The 1,845 lb. payload capacity and 187 cubic feet of cargo area is ideal for local runs to the hardware, building supply store, nursery, you name it. It’s truly amazing how much STUFF you can store and secure inside and cruise down the highway at 75-80 MPH, getting over 20 MPG on regular gas! See EPA Stats here for 1986 Toyota Van with 5-speed: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/2676.shtml Here’s a great, vintage TV Commercial for a 1985 Toyota Cargo Van: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blFo72H11k8 Today, economical vans are no longer being built. And now - with the sobering reality that gas prices in the US will never return to normal, these ‘80’s 4-cylinder Toyota Minivans have now achieved collectable status. With the attrition rate of these vans often accelerated by rust or careless, second-hand owners, it'd be a nice surprise to find one that, despite being 27 years-old, still sparkles and shines like a late model. The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of affluent, truck & van enthusiasts. Such an amazing find is the miraculously well preserved example presented for auction here! Having been loved and cherished by the same family business since new, this 1986 Van has led a charmed life. Built in October of 1985 it was driven less than 5,000 miles per year and has never left the Golden State. And because it was usually stored in the warehouse and only lightly used for local deliveries and weekend excursions, the body, trim, seals and interior are very well preserved...with one exception... Now the bad news: Over 10 years ago, (see Vehicle History Report) the Van was in a rear-end collision (see photos) and the insurance company reported a “total loss” to DMV stating the reason: “New body parts are no longer available”. Now the good news; The other driver’s insurance company paid for the repairs and a local professional shop completed them by installing a perfectly good, used tailgate and bumper and the Van was restored to its original glory (See photos below). Since then, we’ve utilized, driven and enjoyed the Van for years with NO issues whatsoever. Last week, the DMV told us that we had to apply for a new, “Salvage Title” before transfer of ownership could be completed here in California. And, it would only be issued if the Van passed a number of comprehensive state inspections to ensure that all brakes, lamps, smog and safety equipment were installed and working properly. After considerable time and expense, we’re proud to report; the Toyota Van passed all inspections with flying colors without needing a single adjustment or repair! Finally, the Van is currently registered and we have a CA Title in hand that reads “Salvaged”. The newly issued CA Smog Certificate is valid for the next 90 days and can be used to transfer Title here in CA. Let’s have a closer look now. Underneath, there is absolutely NO rust or collision damage to the frame or suspension components. You won’t find many vans of this vintage in rust-free condition. Years ago, when the body was repaired, the exterior was refinished to a nice, driver quality which still looks great and the body panels fit nicely. The glass windshield and windows are factory original without any de-lamination or cracking. Look closely at the pictures and you’ll see the body is not perfect, (some minor dings & chips/scratches in the finish) but it’s held up well given the Van is nearly 30-years old. The immaculate engine compartment (located under the driver's seat) is 100% original. Featuring the legendary 4YE Fuel Injected, 4-cylinder motor that is known for its reliability and longevity, it starts quickly, idles very smoothly and doesn’t burn or drip any oil. The engine is mated to a 5-speed, manual transmission and has rear-wheel drive. As for maintenance, (since new) we’ve kept-it-up with religious oil changes and never allowed mechanical issues to go unattended. A few years ago, the head gasket finally went out - so we decided to “bite the bullet” and spring for an entire upper-engine overhaul which included a valve job and new radiator (the original, clogged radiator was culprit that caused the head gasket to go). Additionally, belts and hoses were changed, plugs and wires renewed, etc. etc. - all at a cost of $2,200. (Ouch!) More recently, we had new brakes and the entire rack & pinion replaced; including a 4-wheel alignment. All the work was performed at a certified mechanic and was not cheap. But with good maintenance, any Toyota can be strong and reliable. Let’s take a look inside now. Open the doors and you will find the immaculate interior is in great, original condition! The reclining vinyl bucket seats with adjustable headrests are surprisingly comfortable. The original dashboard and tilt steering wheel look fantastic and all the gauges in the instrument cluster work properly. The factory Air-Conditioning still blows ice cold and upgraded, AM/FM/Cassette Stereo is in working order. Here’s the best part; the ENORMOUS cargo area! To protect the floor and add comfort, we constructed a carpeted and padded floorboard which easily slides in/out. Original jack assembly located in the rear compartment on the left. On extended weekends, we’ve loaded it with bikes, surfboards, camping equipment, (you name it) and taken countless trips locally and cross-county. The carpeted and padded floor really works well for stretching-out sleeping bags or just to relaxing on beach chairs in the back. With the lift-gate opened, you enjoy watching the surf or the evening sunset. We’ve often locked over $10,000 worth of high-end mountain bikes, luggage and other expensive equipment inside - then hit the surf, wandered into restaurants or checked-into a hotel with never-a-worry that anyone might break-in to such a modest looking van. Everything in this non-smoker interior looks, smells and operates as if the van was built 7 years ago, not 27 years. This one is that clean! Well, here’s one that not only survived the ravages of time but has avoided the challenges of harsh construction, and decades-long abuse at the hands of itinerant workers or uncaring juvenile owners. In fact, this ’86 Van is up to any task imaginable and will serve as a reliable, fun and utilitarian driver ANY time of the year. And no matter where you go, you’ll see a smile on everyone’s face, including your own. To state it succinctly: It delivers on its promise! Presently, we have a clear, California Title. CA license and registration expires November, 2013 and a CA Smog Certificate is included for transfer here in California. Local sales tax and DMV transfer fees apply to residents in CA. This Toyota’s present condition and buying terms have been described as accurately as possible. If you have ANY questions or want to bring a mechanic to inspect, please email us. You will receive a prompt response. All questions must be answered and all inspections must be completed PRIOR TO BIDDING. Proof of insurance will be required for a test drive. Because this is a 27-year-old van, it is being sold in AS-IS CONDITION and comes with absolutely NO WARRANTIES EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED. We are proud to have 100% POSITIVE FEEDBACK. Bid with confidence, knowing everything represented in this auction is accurate. BIDDERS WITH ZERO OR NEGATIVE FEEDBACK MUST EMAIL US FOR APPROVAL PRIOR TO BIDDING OR THEIR BID WILL BE CANCELED.
