Please allow time for all 108 photos to load and inspect as exceptional, classic trucks such as this rarely come along. It has been over 40 years since the last 2nd generation C-10 left the manufacturing plant in Freemont, CA. Very few highly optioned (like this one) survive in the world today. Today the ’67-‘72 C/K series of pickups are as much of a classic to truck guys as the Corvette is to muscle car fans and the '72 Cheyenne, being the last year with the coolest factory options has achieved icon status. Demand for nice examples has intensified and loaded longbeds are quickly being snapped up. Here is a detailed article and current buyer’s guide on the ’67-’72 Chevrolet C10 from Hemmings Motor News: http://www.hemmings.com/hmn/stories/2012/10/01/hmn_buyers_guide1.html If you’ve been out there shopping for a restored classic pickup, you’ve probably noticed that many have been chopped, shaved, lowered, modified and molested far beyond their original, utilitarian purpose and beauty. With the average lifespan of a truck being about a dozen years and the attrition rate often accelerated by careless, second-hand owners, it'd be a nice surprise to find an example of the species that, despite being over 40-years-old, still shines, sparkles and looks exactly like the day it rolled off the showroom floor. The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of affluent, classic truck enthusiasts. Such an amazing find is the miraculously well preserved example presented for auction here! This 1972 Half-Ton Pickup has led a charmed life. Purchased new by a plant supervisor at Mobil Oil, it was “special ordered” at George Chevrolet in Bellflower, CA (see original plate frame). He was happy to wait several months to get a fully equipped Cheyenne in 2-tone ochre & white with wood bed and tool stowage box. On May 19, 1972, he finally took delivery of his dream truck. Living in the sleepy town of Trabuco Canyon, he installed a camper shell on his beloved C10 and took his family on countless camping trips and other adventures. He was religious about oil changes and preformed nearly all the maintenance himself. His sons both became mechanically inclined by learning alongside of their father and the truck remained in the family for 40 years, never leaving the Golden State. The son attests that the engine has NEVER been cracked-open; nor was the truck EVER in a major collision which explains its miraculously well preserved state. Although worn from the years, the truck still had its original paint and interior prior to receiving an extensive restoration last year. One of the most comprehensively documented restorations you'll ever find, a 1-inch stack of receipts totaling over $12,000 in parts and reconditioning expenses as well as a photo journal with countless before/after shots of the restoration are included. Proudly displaying its original and irreplaceable, 6-digit, Blue-and-Yellow California license plates, front and rear, to claim this truck is immaculate would be an understatement. Not only is the body and interior PRESTINE; the engine, drive train and suspension are all in fine working order. Let’s take a closer look now. Exterior: After over 40-years on the road, the unmolested, laser-straight body and undercarriage speak volumes about the loving care this C-10 received and underscores its Southern California provenance. In 2011, the truck received a major cosmetic restoration. Prior to refinish work, the interior was gutted; the bed set aside and all bumpers, windows and exterior trim were removed. Surprisingly, the paint was 100% original with only minor surface rust on some panels and few tiny rust spots in the cab corners and drip rails. The original paint was stripped, new drip rails welded in, corners patched and the entire body was given 3 coats of rust preventative primer, block-sanded between coats. Finally, 2-stage enamel (base coat, clear coat) in factory correct Ochre & White, (Option Code 536) was applied. Interior, cab and bed were all painted separately. The entire clear-coat was then color-sanded and buffed to ensure a show-quality finish. Before reassembly of bed & body to frame, new cab, radiator and bed mounts were installed. Brand new triple-chrome-plated bumpers, mirrors, door handles, locks, and brightwork, upper & lower Cheyenne body moldings, front grill assembly, running/tail lights and emblems were installed. You’ll need your sunglasses to see this beauty in the daylight. A picture says a thousand words. With proper care, the superior quality of this work will last a lifetime. Surveying the truck's straight and smooth coachwork today, we marvel at how well the original body was preserved over the years. There are no major blems; only a couple miniscule dings were found in the sheetmetal inside of the bed. Chrome door handles, mirrors, trim and all brightwork sparkle like new - because they ARE new. Overall, the finish looks so deep you could dive into it. Fleet-side Tool Stowage Box is a highly rare factory option. Stowage door locks with its own, dedicated (round handled) key. Chevy rolls on band new BF Goodrich Radial TA’s mounted to 8X15” Rally Wheels. Super-shiny, chromed center caps & rings are an OEM combo that’s hard to beat! Equally as important as good looks and working mechanicals is what lies beneath the shiny surface. While we are close to the ground, let's get down on our knees to explore the state of things below, shall we? Befitting a dry climate truck, everything looks wonderful down under. If you know just how rust-prone these completely unprotected C10s are, you will highly appreciate this marvelous specimen! Surprisingly, the engine is dry but fluid seepage is visible from the transmission and power steering unit - consistent with the age of the truck. Brand new Flo-Master mufflers and Trac-bar are seen here beneath the marine coated wood bed and polished, stainless steel fasteners. Full spare tire/wheel resides below the wood bed. Most importantly, body, frame, sills and floorboards are SOLID and there is absolutely NO evidence of even minor collision repair that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights. Reflecting on the fact that this US gem is 41 years old, we dare to pose the question: can it get any better than this (unless you'd keep a truck in a vacuum-sealed bubble, perhaps)? Solid Wood Bed was the option that every dyed-in-the-wool truck enthusiast would have checked on the C-10 order form, if it wasn't for the exorbitant price. It is among the most appreciated options today on any period, classic truck. 100% solid oak strips were finished (top, bottom and sides) with 8 coats of spar varnish, hand sanded between coats. Polished, stainless steel strips and hardware look spectacular and lends the truck incomparable charisma. This splendid Californian turns heads everywhere and can be proudly exhibited at the most prestigious Auto Shows here in the Southland or anywhere in the World. Let’s have a peak under the hood. The C10 is powered by a rock-solid, 350 CID pushrod engine that has earned its reputation of being unbreakable. It sounds crisp and runs smoothly, like a turbine, with superb oil pressure, cold or hot. The 8-cylinder power plant is coupled to its original Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission that leaks a little fluid but shifts smoothly and superbly in all forward and reverse gears. It may come as a revelation to many, but all you ever need to keep this strong vee-eight going is a screw-driver, a hammer, a set of pliers and maybe a little wire. For anybody who's paying his own bills, it surely provides peace of mind to know there are no black boxes, injectors, electronics, and fancy stuff like that… Overall, the truck’s mechanics exude pride of ownership. Apart from religious oil changes, extracurricular work was limited to preventative maintenance. Recently, all brakes pads, brake master, hoses, belts, starter and the battery were replaced. The entire A/C system was re-sealed and serviced with a new A/C condenser, fuel lines were cleaned and plugs renewed. Yes, any Chevy can be very tough and reliable with a bit of preventative maintenance! No wear item has been left unattended; as a result, this classic Chevy is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Speaking of cosmetics, let us stress how immaculate the body is, how sparkling the chrome, how glossy the paint… If you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 4-year-old, not a 40-year-old truck. This one is that clean! We'll inspect the interior next, shall we? There is no substitute for originality, and this C-10 proves the point. The deluxe Saddle Interior with Cheyenne trim was reupholstered with careful attention to faithfully preserve its original look and feel. The embossed trim sections were preserved from the original bench seat and carefully sewn into the pleating of the new seat vinyl. New dense seat padding replaced the 40-year-old, foam for a firm, “new truck feel”. A new, factory correct steering wheel and horn button complement this vintage interior. Sitting behind the wheel and observing this beautifully preserved dash, one is transported back in time. Painted steel accented by chrome trim reminds us of the good old days, long before dash boards became completely plasticized. All the gauges and lights appear to be working, as does the windshield wipers, AM radio and glove box light! The new A/C control unit functions correctly, all the flaps work smoothly to direct air for heater/defrost and the A/C blows ICE COLD! New ducting, A/C & defrost vents, glove box, key switch (to match door key) a refurbished original AM radio with new speaker, instrument bezel misc. knobs, trim and upper "crash pad" were all fitted into the freshly painted dash. Driving this truck and observing the guages, the tactile pleasures are markedly increased by the knowledge that everything actually works… Above, the factory original, headliner and sun visors with brand new rearview mirror, sparking chrome accent trim and dome light highly compliment this stunningly original interior. With new regulators, window cranks, door handles, locks and arm rests, everything opens and closes smoothly and precisely with one key. Door panels were shipped-off to “The only guy on the planet who can faithfully restore the faux wood-grain inserts on a ’72 Cheyenne” (according to 67-72chevytrucks.com). Needless to say, they both came out perfect! A brand new tinted windshield and all new inner/outer window, door and vent seals were installed. Original jack is included with the long handle. Finally, brand new factory correct, original saddle brown, loop-pile carpet was installed to finish this stunning interior. In short, everything looks, feels and functions as if the truck was delivered yesterday, not 41 years ago. Drivability: There’s nothing in the world that compares to this Cheyenne’s driving experience. Though over 40 years old, this C10 with factory disk brakes and cold A/C still maneuvers comfortably in today's bustling traffic. In any climate, the powerful 8-cylinder engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly through the gears without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror. Warmed up, the oil pressure and coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs in hot summer traffic. The coil-spring rear suspension gives the truck a “car-like” ride. Two heavy-duty trailing arms mounted the rear axle prevent lateral movement. A brand new, transverse Panhard bar (trac-bar) was installed which further keeps everything firmly in place. The 3-speed transmission shifts very smooth and precise. The power, front disk brakes anchor the truck securely, in a straight line, and without any hint of fading. Aided by new BF Goodrich Radial TA’s, handling is simple and superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. All in all, this C10 is strong, steady, straight…and a joy to drive! Everything works on this C10, from the lights and switches to the A/C. Despite its age, the truck definitely is ready to be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live. Classic pickup trucks are as iconic as Coca Cola and very collectible to boot. Mopar and Ford lovers can take their pick of the litter, but what about us Chevy enthusiasts who have developed a taste for the finer things in automotive life? Well, here’s one that not only survived the ravages of time but has avoided the challenges of harsh farm and ranch life, and decades-long abuse at the hands of itinerant gardeners or uncaring juvenile owners. In fact, this ’72 Chevy Cheyenne is up to any task imaginable. It could serve as a show truck, a "new" old truck to relive the good old days, or simply as a reliable, fun and utilitarian driver ANY time of the year. At the very least, no matter where you go, you’ll see a smile on everyone’s face, including your own. To state it succinctly: It delivers on its promise! There's but one stumbling block on the way to C10 heaven: Original CA examples that are fully equipped and restored to show quality have become increasingly hard to find. All the more reason to watch this one closely… Presently, we have a clear, California Title. CA tax, license and registration fees were paid through March, 2013. No penalties will be due to the new owner. Only local sales tax and DMV license for 2014 plus $15 transfer fees apply to residents in CA.
