Vehicle Detail

This is an amazingly nice, original 1951 Pontiac Streamliner Station Wagon with original 268-cubic inch straight 8 flathead engine, four-speed Hydramatic transmission, recent body, paint and chrome work and a recent history that includes a long list of mechanical improvements. The car was purchased new by a man in Puyallup, Washington, who traded it in to a local-area Pontiac dealer more than 10 years ago. The Pontiac dealer owned the wagon for 10 years, intending to complete a full restoration and display the car in his dealership showroom. Over the 10-year period he had his most elderly mechanic--who worked on '51 models when they were new--spend a portion of his time working on the '51 wagon, replacing "everything that needed anything" including new brakes, tires, exhaust system, radiator, water pump, all hoses, belts and gaskets, starter, carburetor, battery, fuel pump, various filters, the fuel tank and many other items. At about the time the dealership owner was planning to begin body and paint work, Pontiac ceased to exist as a GM brand and the dealership went out of business. Not long after that, the man I got the car from was able to buy the car in its excellent mechanical condition, needing only a bit of modest body, paint and chrome work. He had a veteran bodyman go over the Pontiac, straightening some shallow front-fender dents, replacing a bit of sheet metal above the rear wheelwells (no Bondo anywhere), and repainting the lower half of the car in its original color, Palmetto Green. (The hood and top are original paint, in very good condition.) He also replaced and had rechromed half a dozen different pieces of the grille, including outer wing sections that had been creased when the original, elderly owner apparently had a bit of trouble parking in his single-car garage. The grille is like new at this point, including a new red Pontiac emblem in the center. He also found and restored a vintage sun visor, and amber hood ornament. The car's interior is amazing--all original and in terrific shape. He had a professional replace the fabric on the front seat because the original naughahyde was torn, but it's a good match to the original middle and back seats. The back of the front seat is still original. The car has its original, great-condition flooring alongside the middle and rear seats, but the black rubber floormats around the front seat need to be replaced. The floors are solid in the car, except for a few pinholes ahead of the front seat, and the original headliner is in amazing condition with no tears or rips. Painted woodgrain on the outside of the car is original but I love the patina and would never redo it, but that is up to the next owner. The woodgrain on the inside is perfect...and the doors have genuine ash wood framing the lower edges of all windows--a beautiful and original feature. The car starts instantly, runs and drives flawlessly, and the transmission shifts almost imperceptably. The car runs so smooth and quiet that sometimes it hard to tell its even running. I've been impressed with the power and acceleration of the straight-eight engine--lots of torque--and the car comes with its original frame-mounted towing hitch. Have added some vintage 1950's travel decals in the rear windows (see photo), which get a lot of attention from passersby. The car is beautiful inside and out, mechanically excellent. Finally, the car is for sale locally so I must reserve the right to end the auction early should it sell...and the car comes with the dressier, larger hubcaps shown in the first photo, not the smaller caps that appear in some other images.
