Vehicle Detail
Awesome 1961 Corvette Convertible frame off restoration 283/245 HP 2 X 4 engine and 4 Speed Transmission I purchased this car about 9 years ago for my wife and it is an incredible car that we both have had a lot of fun with it in driving the car, showing the car and just owning this beautiful piece of American automobile art. I have started the build of a 69 Camaro Convertible Pace Car for her and we are ready to sell the 61 to make room for the 69. I have been fortunate in my life to own and drive corvettes since my first convertible in 1972 and I currently have two other vintage C2 Corvettes that are in restoration (both 63s one split window and one convertible the split window coupe will be for sale when completed) . I fully understand every aspect of a vintage Corvette and I can tell you that this car is sweet and correct in all the right ways. W hen we purchased the car it had just under gone a professional frame off restoration. The underside of the car looks outstanding and was painted like the exterior. There is no rust in the frame and the entire suspension was rebuilt with new bearing, shocks, tie rods, bushings, springs, everything. The car and frame was completely dissembled, painted and re-assembled with all new parts. The exterior color of the car is ermine white with a new Black Power Convertible Top and new black interior. There were not a lot of 1961 Corvettes built with power tops, this one came with it and it works. The builder of the car had built and installed a 305 motor in the car. I had a fresh 283 block and a set of power packed heads and decided to put the correct 283 2 X 4 type engine back into the car. I also have a set of the 461 fuel heads (in excellent condition) that will go with the car if wanted. I located a correct 2 X 4 GM winters aluminum intake and a set of the correct Carter CFB carburetors. I sent the Carburetors off to St Louis and had them professionally refurbished back to factory standards at a cost of $1800 just to refurbish the carbs. I also found a correct rebuilt dual point distributor and installed the factory wires, points, dist. cap and rotor. I had the following machine work performed at a professional machine shop. The block was bored .030 over, crank shaft was turned and polished to .010 .010, the rotating assembly was computer balanced, the entire engine was blueprinted, new brass freeze plugs were installed and the heads were fitted with new stainless steel valves, matched springs to the cam, magnafluxed and surfaced. I installed new cam bearings, new .030 over pistons, new rings, new main and rod bearings, new hi volume oil pump and shaft, new 245 HP Duntoff grind .018 .018 (valve lash) solid lift cam, new solid lifters, new roller chain and timing gears, new push rods, new gaskets, new clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing and had the flywheel resurfaced. I installed the correct wire looms and dist wiring shields just like it came from the factory. I also installed the correct fuel lines, fuel filter, fuel pump, correct progressive 2 X 4 linkage and correct 2 X 4 AC air cleaner and oil breather cap. The generator is the correct type and has the rear output drive that runs the tach. The Water pump, pulleys, radiator and all hoses are correct and new. The fan blade is an updated 5 blade flex fan for better cooling. I personally built this engine and the motor has no leaks, runs perfectly and is not even broken in good. I had the transmission professionally rebuilt and put back to exact standards by a professional 4 speed re-builder in Baxley GA; he is the best I have ever found and his transmissions run and shift smoothly with no noise. The car is riding on a new set of American Racing 15” Torque Thrust II billet aluminum wheels and a new set of R15” 215/60 BF Goodrich TA Radials. I have the original hub caps that will go with the car. As I stated above the car has been completely restored to the exterior color of Ermine White and a new black power top that has been up only about 4 to 5 times in its life. The entire interior is new and flawless, it is a high quality original style interior that is black and of the same design as what was available in 1961. It has beautiful 80/20 loop pile carpet custom embroidered Corvette floor mats and the entire rear storage and trunk areas are carpeted in the same carpet that was used in the interior of the car. The car is equipped with the original exhaust manifolds and stock type mufflers that have a really nice sound. This car runs strong and it drives and handles great. The cooling system keeps the car at the correct temperature and the oil pressure is excellent. The Paint on the car is good and is a single stage paint, there are some slight imperfections and a few small road chips, other than that the paint and jambs are very good. The body is very straight and all body lines align very well. There is new glass all the way around and all new weather stripping everywhere. There is a small hairline crack forming in the paint on the right passenger side front fender, I have included a photo of the hairline crack, you cannot see it from 5 to 6 feet but it is there. All of the Chrome and trim is excellent on the car with the exception of the front license plate holder; it has some surface rust on it and need to be replaced. The new part is readily available and inexpensive. I will install a new one if the new owner wants me to. Everything on the car works and works surprisingly well. All of the instruments are new and all work perfectly with the exception of the stock radio. I have no idea what is wrong with the radio because I have never attempted to hook it up or check it out. We have put about 2000 miles on the car since the restoration and it runs and drives great. This car is completely restored and needs nothing other than a new owner and driving. Finally, I have found over time you normally find two kinds Corvettes, those that have been treated rough and have had substandard care and repairs and those that have been taken care of and received TLC their entire life. I am offering my wife’s baby here that has been garage kept the last 9 years (I know for sure) and was told it was garage kept before us. The car has never seen the rain since the restoration and you can tell this 1961 is one that has been taken very good care of its entire life. The pictures do not do this car justice, it looks better in person so please come to see the car, you will not regret it. Look at all the features of this car listed below.
