Vehicle Detail
1968 Dodge Dart: I purchased this Dart in March 2007 for $4000 on ebay The car was in California. It cost another $1250 to get the car transported to Virginia and titled here. I do have clean title. Car was originally a slant 6. It was a rust free California car, with straight body. However the right quarter had been replaced because of an accident. The frame seems to be straight. The car drives straight. I think the new quarter could use a bit more block sanding than it got. The inner wheel well has some wrinkles that are visible in the trunk. Other than the quarter issue, I think the body is in nice condition. I like the post cars. Also, they have additional stability from the B-pillar. If the car does not sell, I intend to test that at the drag strip. By the way, if you want a hard top, stay away from this car. Differences in the roof make these cars hard to convert. I keep my receipts. In total I have $13,910 in this car including the purchase price. Most of what I have done is mechanical and in accord with 1968 Factory Shop Manual, included with sale. ENGINE: I have $3800 in the engine, fuel, electrical, and exhaust. I purchased the Schumacher BB conversion kit for the slant 6 K-frame. The kit comes with chrome headers and that require no cutting. Also the car has 2.5" dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers. The engine is a 1973 440 with forged steel crank, stock rods, and stock pistons. I rebuilt the 440 with a Mancini rebuild kit. Mopar Performance Cam P4452993, 280/280 duration, .474" lift, Rating 13.5 sec. To compensate for low compression, I did deck the heads by .070". .050" gives 9:1 compression. The Felpro head gasket takes up the other .020". I had the machine shop take .058" off the intake and I shimmed the rocker shaft .050" to compensate. The intake is an Edelbrock aluminum dual plane with rebuilt Holley 750 vacuum secondary carb. The wiring is set up for Mopar electronic ignition, although I have been using a Mallory Unilite shutter operated distributor. I did install a pilot bearing in the rear of the crank in case I wanted to convert to manual trans later. The engine runs strong. I would recommend every component I used. Electrical: Car starts and charges without issue. It has a 60 amp alternator with electronic voltage regulator. It has no current draws. All lights work fine. Transmission: I started with a 1969 727 Torqueflite. I spent $875 on rebuild and B&M Megashifter. I used a stock 10" torque converter, rebuilt. I spent another $200 on Cheetah reverse manual valve body. The B&M shifter gives crisp shifts. I like the ratchet action. Driveshaft and Axle: I spent $500 on a new Denny's driveshaft which was custom made given the measurements of this car. It has given flawless service. My car has an 8 3/4 rear with 2.76 sure-grip. The car did have 4"x5 lug pattern. I found an older pick up in a junkyard. Moser cut and resplined the axles so I could have the 4.5"x5 lug pattern. The axles have the original tapered roller bearings installed. Condition: excellent. No disintegrating ball bearings to worry about. The 8 3/4" has also been flawless. Power Steering: Schumacher headers do allow power steering. Bouchillon pulleys all around allowed the BB set up. The steering gear seeps slightly from seal at the top around the worm shaft. However, it is a small leak. You could drive the car home without issue. I have had it aligned. Cooling: Radiator is aluminum 25x19.75". The water pump is a new Mancini unit. The fan is stock although I eliminated the clutch fan. The cooling system works excellent. The heater core outlets are capped. I did not want the heat in the passenger compartment. Suspension: I went with a 1973 A-Body spindles and upper control arms to get front disc brakes with 4.5"x5 lug pattern. I checked all front suspension and steering linkage and replaced components as necessary. The slant 6 torsion bars could not lift the 440. I replaced the slant 6 torsion bars with a pair of new Firm Feel 1" bars. They improved the stance of the car immensely. Tires: like new Goodrich 235-60R15 on stock rims, 6.5" width Grill: I purchased a repainted center section. I think the right side bezel looks OK. I would replace the left side bezel, available for $140 from valley vintage auto parts on ebay. Glass: Front windshield is cracked along the bottom on the right side. Interior: all gages work, including the gas gage. I have some parts to convert the gage set to rally tach. Current gage set is unrestored bar type speedo, no tach. The dash is black and smooth, no cracks. The door panels are nice. Split Bench front seat: all slides and hinges work, but needs seat cover. Back seat has hole at top of seat cover. Car needs headliner. Seat belts and shoulder belts present and good condition. Overall, interior has all components, but needs complete resto. Drive Home: Yes Disclosure: This car is not for sale locally. The auction will run until it closes, unless someone takes buy-it-now. Any payment other than cash will have to clear my bank before the car is picked up. I would like a $500 good faith PayPal deposit within 48 hours of winning bid. I am a private seller. I make no warranty. The car is sold as is. For questions, please call 804-441-1563. My name is Ben. I work in an office where cell phones have to be off.
