Vehicle Detail

**I decided to re list under 'BMW 2002' instead of BMW 'other'. Someone was kind enough to email me that my listing was difficult to find and that there were probably a bunch of people that missed it. I'm not looking to drag this out, so I previously had the reserve at $13k and have now lowered it to $11k. That's less than the parts (no labor) that I have in it and, even without concours flawlessly smooth metal, it's an unbelievable deal for someone. I'm out of town till Saturday, but will still be answering any emails and completely happy to talk on the phone with anyone that exchanges info with me. I'm also very very willing to show the car to anyone starting on Saturday afternoon, or to a representative of a bidder, if you're out of state. Thank you to all the people that emailed me during the first listing. The classic BMW community is truly amazing. I look forward to joining it again when the time is more appropriate for me. :-) The original listing is below. Thanks!! Well, I'm putting my manila 1969 BMW 1600 up for auction. (built date is 10/68) I bought this CA car from the daughter of the second owner and she was in need of a full overhaul (the car, not the girl..actually, she was in pretty rough shape, too) Anyway, my desire was to finally do a complete ground up resto on a car myself, so that I knew every single piece of the car personally. I started by completely stripping her down and having the body blasted clean. I fixed one tiny little sliver of rust on the rocker by cutting, cleaning, and welding new metal in. Other than that, no other rust existed. From there, I basically replaced or rebuilt everything from the bottom to the top. I'll just make a list of everything I replaced or rebuilt and try to include everything. Front and rear subframes completely stripped, replaced with poly bushing, new tie rods, ends, bearings, brakes, calipers rebuilt, new discs, pads, etc. IE stage 2 springs with Bilstein sport shocks 22mm front sway bar 20mm adjustable rear sway bar Rear shaft boots new with proper oil in them 1980's Hayashi Racing Wheels (HRE) 15" with 195/50 tires -I completely disassembled and refinished the wheels as well Engine: I used a 2L M10 with a full high end machine job done by Top End Performance with 9.6:1 cr, forged JE pistons, 284 cam, fully rebuilt head, everything balanced, etc. obviously all new pieces to go along with it, freeze plugs, timing chain, rail, valve springs, seats, guides…everything!! I did the assembly myself I got two new Weber DCOE 40's with Top End's intake and linkage set up, also. Mech advance tii dist from IE New high output starter. lighter and starts faster Radiator is rebuilt and runs very cool. All new hoses everywhere 5 Speed trans added, also. Brand new clutch, resurfaced, lightened flywheel. new slave, master, pedal box is completely restored. With the original long neck 4:10 rear end it's a really nice mix of amazing off the line and easy highway cruising. ( I've only put a few hundred miles on it, but I've cruised at 70mph on the Hwy very comfortably with much more to give Proper shortened driveshaft, shift platform, new guibos, center bearing Full new exhaust that I actually had someone do, finally. It's a stock style exhaust, as I wanted to try to stay as original as I could. So it's not a loud fart can thing...not my style. Rebuilt the heater core Interior has brand new carpets from 'Esty' on the FAQ forum and new seat covers from World Uph. I also added new foam underneath for better support. New rear parcel tray with new vinyl New Headliner from World Uph Door cards have new wood backs Almost all the rubber is new (there are a couple little window pieces that are still/were unavailable, but you can't see them) -Door seals -windshield front and rear seals with new chrome lockstrip -front quarter window seals -rear quarter window seals -trunk seal -under hood rubber all new-new license plate light assemblies -One new visor (the other is still NLA at the moment) -New Kidney bean grill (had to buy in the UK…$$$) -Gas tank removed, cleaned and painted. -Odyssey battery under the rear seat -Replaced clock with silver dollar tach (have clock still) -Euro blinkers purchased in GermanyI have a box of parts, too. Windshield wipers and motor (I never planned on driving it in the rain, so I saved the weight), washer fluid tank and motor (working), I do also have the four short white strips of pinch welt that go in the trunk (white was the rarer correct piece for this car), the recovered wide base headrests for the seats (I liked the period correct look without them, so I didn't puncture the new covers to use them), and a bunch of varies other pieces, as well. Body: Blasted body Sealed bare metal and used all top quality, expensive, products from primers, fillers, sealers, etc Top coated with RM Uno single stage paint (extremely good paint!) in the original, from the factory, manila color I also had the rear light bezels rechromed and the rear quarter window latches rechromed, also. They look fantastic. The bumpers were in nice condition and I also removed the overriders to clean up the look of the car a bit. (I still have them, of course) Basically almost everything has been gone through. The car runs amazingly well. Very quick and smooth power. I figure somewhere in the 150hp range, which, if you know these cars, is pretty solid, especially with the long nose 4:10. I also got black plates for it and had them approved in Sacramento for the car, so it looks much more correct for the period. I only have 300-350 miles on the car since finishing. I've spent most of that time tuning the carbs and driving my son to school. It's pretty much a new car. Okay, so now for any of the issues/full disclosure info -I realized that I'm not a pro block sander, etc, so the final bodywork is not flawless. You can see waves in the panels. I really don't know how bad it is, as everyone has different perception, but at the few car shows, not only has no one said anything, they all were extremely complimentary. You can't see it in photos really, but I'll try to show them. The paint itself is nice and smooth, wet sanded and polished (many, many hours of work) The up side is that, since it's a single stage, very high quality paint, pieces can be worked on at any time and be flawlessly blended, if so desired. But again, probably overkill and not required. -At some point prior to my ownership, I believe the front clip was replaced and someone that knows these cars would be able to tell. The attaching point on the upper front fender isn't exactly like stock, but is clean and barely noticeable. The join line on the inner fender well in the engine bay isn't perfect, either…not awful, by any means, but not exactly factory fresh. I just want everything important out there in the open. -For some reason, when I got the 5spd, I thought the front and rear seals had been done (miscommunication) they had not and they are seeping. So far, I keep the underside wiped down anyway, so it's not really an issue. Removing the trans right after I finished the car to replace two seals is not on the top of my "Hey, I know a fun weekend project" list…but I would do it at some point so I could keep everything nice and clean under there. -The dash isn't perfect. I did a repair on it and recoated it with SEM paint, but it could be better. Again, not something that most people will even notice. -The green blinker light in the dash isn't working with the switch…I just haven't spent the time to chase it down. Not a biggie, but trying to disclose everything. -I keep it on a battery tender, but I think there is a small electrical drain coming from the gas tank sending unit that I haven't been able to pinpoint yet. -One of the wheel center caps fell off, but I'm having a friend make one for me on his 3D printer..pretty awesome. I think that's about it. So, to sum up, I'm sure I've really only glossed over the work I've done on this car. I spent almost 2 years fully doing this. Since I took ownership, she has never been in the rain or sat outside overnight. In fact, I haven't even washed her and don't plan it, since she's never been dirty. I have a thick folder of every receipt for the car and it's amazing how fast it adds up. I'm over $12k in parts alone...zero labor of mine in that number. I'm trying to be realistic with the reserve, as well. If I was able to get the bodywork concours flawless, the reserve would be much, much higher. I understand that. But, really, if someone buys this for close to the cost of parts, they've gotten an absolutely ridiculous deal. To pay someone to build the car would be double or triple the cost, easily. Of course, with that said, if you also have the skills and time to do all the work yourself, then you could probably do it in a couple years, too, for the cost of parts (and your sanity) Which brings me to the question that we always want to know…"why the hell are you selling it if you just finished it?!" Honestly…it's kind of stupid. I spent all this time killing myself on this car, just wanting to have this sweet BMW to have forever and enjoy on weekends, etc…but once I finally finished it..all I can remember is the pain I went through trying to build it and my heart just wasn't in it like I thought it would be. That really sucks. Some of my friends warned me about that, but I just laughed and said "naw, I'm just enjoying the journey". Oh well…. If I end up keeping her, I'll just drive it once in a while, go to the Sunday car shows, and blah, blah, blah….Maybe in time I would get over the 'journey' and really enjoy the car, but I really understand now why people just buy a finished car… I didn't get it before. So, If there's someone out there that wants a really nice classic BMW to enjoy the hell out of, then maybe they should have this one, instead of me…:-) ***I want no accidental misrepresentation on my part, so I would prefer bidders to contact me and set up a viewing/test drive or have someone in SoCal come by. Join bmw2002faq forum and ask for help or for a local forum member to meet me somewhere for an inspection. They are an invaluable resource for info and can help answer any questions you may have. I'm Ziff73 over there. Thanks for looking/bidding. -Stephen I will help in any way I can to coordinate shipping with you.
