Vehicle Detail
Mercedes did not import the 500SL version of its famous and long-lived R107 chassis "SL" cars into the US. After the 450SL came the 380SL for the US market, followed by the 560SL before the 107 chassis was discontinued. None of the US cars had the speed and power of the European spec 500SL (240hp for the 500SL versus 157 for the 380SL and 227hp for the 560SL). Still, because of its desirability, a few of the European version 500SL cars were imported privately like this one. If you are lucky enough to find one, look for the European-spec bumpers and headlights--some of these cars were modified to meet US specs. This one is unmolested. It was bought in Germany in December 1984 and imported and owned by one Bay Area owner, Dr. Ron Gobel. He lovingly cared for the car through his death a few years ago. I purchased the car from his widow this summer, intending to keep it for a long time. Circumstances force me to put the car up for sale. This 500SL is finished in a striking anthracite grey metallic. The paint is recent with a vivid and deep gloss. Zero rust as it has been a California car all its life. The interior is black leather. It has the rear jump seat with a fold-down back--again, not a common option. It has both the hard top and soft top. The soft top is black canvas but needs to be renewed, though the top frame is solid. The drivers seat is covered in a sheepskin but underneath, the seat bottom leather is brittle and breaking up and will need to be renewed at some point. Soft tops and Leather seat kits are readily available for reasonable prices. The engine is smooth and strong, the transmission shifts cleanly and without hesitation. 165Kwell-cared for miles which is not much on a 28 year old Mercedes like this--it will go many, many more miles. The suspension is tight, the brakes are good and the tires are near new. Easily passed smog. It's a joy to drive. These cars will only appreciate in value. Ebay doesn't recognize the Euro-spec VIN so the one above is incorrect. The correct VIN is WDB1070461A022317. These were not very common options on US spec cars of this vintage.
