While never intended for production, falling sales of the traditional MG models in the critical American market caused a change of heart among the MG board, and the car, initially to be called the UA-series, was given the green light for the regular production. As it was so different from the older MG models it was called the MGA, the "first of a new line" to quote the contemporary advertising. The original 1489 cc engine produced 68 hp but was soon upgraded to 72 hp. Including the coupe versions the total production of standard, single cam MGAs came to 58,750 and paved the way for a whole new generation of MG sports cars. NO BONDO.
