Vehicle Detail
Overview: 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia Camper: Here's a full video overview: http://youtu.be/jeVHdBIlJks This is a great opportunity for a “do-it-yourself” type of buyer to get a classic Westfalia camper without having to pay top dollar. The most desirable Westy vans are the 1986-1991 models. These models (when fully restored) often sell for over $20,000. She’s a fantastic camper for a couple or small family (sleeps 4) that loves exploring the great outdoors while still enjoying some creature comforts. The camper is currently located in Houston, Texas. I purchased her from owners in north-central Kentucky a few years ago and put a lot of work and miles into her. She had 168,000 miles when I bought her, and she's now up just above 187,000, including a trip all the way around the US and into Canada during a four-month trip in the summer of 2011. I also put about 3000 miles on her this past summer during a two-month trip around the midwest. When I purchased her in 2010, I was investing in her for the long haul. You'll see a list of the extensive work she's had done in the last two and a half years – unfortunately our life situation has shifted and I have to part with her long before I intended... The big improvements since I bought her: Rebuilt the engine – fall 2011New transmission – spring 2011All new coolant hoses – ALL new – 2010 & 2011Four new tires – at 180,000 milesNew radiator – 2011 New shocks – 2011 More improvements: Replaced skylight & sealReplaced pop-top tent (some very small holes in the new screens)Replaced pop-top sealsNew high-quality floor mats throughoutReplaced upper bunk foam with memory foamAdditional memory foam for both upper & lower beds for comfortRemoved Fridge – Replaced with GoWesty kitMiddle console between front seatsFour new speakers (JVC CS-V426)Headlight Warning Buzzer – if headlights left onRear brakes: shoes/drums/cynlinder/flushReplaced the Air Flow MeterNew fuel line hosesNew beltsProfessionally-applied tint on windowsAdded auxiliary battery (under driver's seat) & wiringlinked multiple DC outlets to battery in the front and back of vanadded AC converterswitch allows stereo to use either batteryReplaced interior bulbs with LED bulbsReplaced much of the cabinet moldingReplaced sink pumpAdded multiple cup holders in front and backRear window fish-eye lensNew antennaLeather steering wheel coverNew rear hatch strutsTwo fire extinguishersNew VW hubcapsStove and sink in working order – used recentlyStereo with AM/FM/CD and Aux plug for iPodSnap-on screen for leaving the back hatch openExtension to leave the back hatch open a few inches but locked for securitySnap-on screen with center zipper opening for sliding door Yes, I've done a lot! I've also done partial body repairs to some old dents (I've had no accidents or dents myself) and some body rust. You'll be able to see what it did look like in some of the old photographs and compare it to what it looks like now. I was intending to complete the body repairs and have her painted. I was also going to get new bumpers as well, and repad the driver's seat, which has some foam collapse on one edge, though it's still plenty comfortable for driving. She used to have AC at some time in the long ago past, but much of the equipment and hoses have been removed. Re-installing AC could be done, but it would be quite an undertaking. Please review the photos, details and terms before bidding. I've represented the VW as accurately as I can, including a video of her in action, but remember that she is a 1987, so you should consider that before bidding. She passed her last full inspection in 2011 for emissions. The 2012 emissions test was waved due to being over 25 years old – it was just a safety test for brakes and lights. Reasons to consider this Westfalia: If you live on the East Coast or in the MidWest or South, you can get a Westy without having to pay to ship one from out West. We had great family trips in her for the couple of years that we had her, including over 10,000 miles on one long roadtrip in 2011. She's been to Florida, DC, NYC, Montreal, Niagara Falls, Chicago, Glacier National Park, Calgary, Banff, Vancouver Island, Seattle, Napa Valley, the Rockies and all over Texas – just while I've had her. Those she will likely need more work over time, all of the big things have been done – you're getting a majorly rebuilt VW! There’s lots of support for this kind of project online at places like vanagon.com. Inexpensive parts are also available from many online vendors such as busdepot.com. There is warm community of Westy drivers and aficionados online always happy to provide free knowledge and advice (and great stories from the road!) Exterior: The exterior of this Westy is in the midst of some TLC. While the paint appears to be factory original, there were a few dings and dents on the van, including one larger dent in the front of the van, though it was cosmetic only. There was some minor seam rust, but less than most Vanagons from the East/Midwest. The headlights, turn signals, wiper, horn, all work as they should. The doors fit well and close with a satisfying “thunk.” The same key operates the ignition, all doors, and the gas cap. Sale includes one of those cool, original “VW logo” keys. Interior: The front seats have no rips or tears and had a good cleaning a year ago. The passenger front seat can swivel 180 degrees to face the rear of the van when parked, to make for a convenient seating arrangement when camping. The interior cabinetry is the grey version. On the market, this is generally more desirable than the beige or “wood” paneling style that was offered in earlier years, and is preferred for re-sale. The original rear seat fabric is in good condition with no tears. The rear mattress pad over the engine is a replacement and has a different fabric, but is not visible when the couch is in the upright position and the rear mattress pad is left in place. The front carpeting shows wear. The carpeting in the center area of the van is missing. All is now covered by high-quality, custom floor mats. Both swing-out tables are present. One in the rear and one that can be used between the driver and passenger seats – perfect for an extra dining area or for your laptop. There is a 3.0 gallon propane tank underneath the driver’s side of the van. There is a two-burner propane stove. The stove works fine and is a breeze to use. There is a 13.2 gallon on-board water tank with electric pump and an interior sink. A previous owner made a modification in the back so that there was a “snake hose” (like the kind found on your average kitchen sink) positioned out the rear cabinet facing the rear hatch door for outdoor rinses at the beach, etc. I removed the hose and extra sink pump, though you could re-install it. There is a hole cut on the rear of the back cabinets where the hose came out. The original full set of privacy curtains is included. When all the curtains are installed, you have 360 degrees of privacy and nobody can see inside. Powertrain and Drivability: The 2.1 litre, four cylinder engine was rebuilt by a mechanic in 2011 – near the end of our big summer trip! I've since taken it on a number of small trips and a longer 3000-mile vacation. The van has been great about coolant and isn't overheating. The engine runs well enough to cruise at highway speeds (60 to 65 mph). There was a cruise control installed after-market, but it is not currently working. Likely a minor fix. It's an automatic transmission – the transmission was redone by Aamco in 2011. I have owned this van for its last 19,000 miles and it has been regularly serviced and its oil changed. Comfort Enhancements: This camper van has many popular options: It has an automatic transmission, which is more difficult to find in Vanagons of this era. Anyone can drive this van! It has power steering. The van has power brakes. The van has power mirrors. Camping Gear: The rear seat easily folds into a bed “downstairs” and sleeps two adults. I've added a memory foam mattress that folds out of the way when not in use, and folds out to cover the entire bed for sleeping. The upstairs bed under the pop-top is in nice shape – I replaced the pad itself with high-quality memory foam, plus the extra layer of memory foam for comfort. It can sleep two adults but usually the kids want to sleep upstairs! We replaced the original pop-top canvas tent right after we bought it. There are three screened windows. There are some very slight tears in the new screens from use, but they are minor. There are screens for leaving the back hatch and the sliding door open so that she's like a big tent. Terms: Please read all the details outlined here and review the photos. I’m happy to answer questions before bidding. This is a used, 25-year-old vehicle and is being sold “as-is.” Please don’t bid unless you are serious about owning this vehicle. I would be willing to pick you up at either airport (Bush or Hobby) to send you off on your first adventure! Again, I can't guarantee everything will be perfect for your journey, but I have driven it on multiple long trips, as you hopefully already know. I'm sorry to see her go, but I hope you can enjoy her as much as we have!
