Vehicle Detail
This Scout was built in the last few months of this body style. The second half of '71 international switched to the Scout II. It has the original motor with an original 67K on the odometer. The vehicle was purchased new by a gentleman in Maine who used it strictly to plow his own driveway, and kept it stored out of the elements year round for about 30 years. The exterior has been repainted the original "Avocado" green and prior to being painted I had a few dints and dings addressed. The frame is solid with only surface scaling. There are a few minor blisters in the paint here and there, but the biggest external problem area is the driver's side front corner panel. The paint is still all intact, but I would recommend replacing this panel in the next few years (I've seen it on ebay for $100.) The interior has a few places that are rusted through, mostly around the back of the bed, and the driver's floor board would need replacing at some point for a total restore if desired. The passenger seat has hardly been used, but the driver's seat could use a reupholstering, as it has tears along the piping. The only thing not original on the body is the custom front bumper. This was fabricated by a professional Scout modifier on the West Coast per my request and was 900$. It has a winch plate and is made of incredibly hardcore steel. If you want the original bumper, these run around $100 on ebay and are readily available. (I might still have the one from this Scout but it probably got scrapped). Mechanically, the vehicle is amazing. The motor runs very smooth and very well. The water pump may need to be replaced depending on whether or not you plan on running it at highway speeds; if just for town, it would be fine as is. Here's a few of the replaced parts:I rebuilt the brake system replacing everything except the master cylinder, which I bought the rebuild kit for and completely overhauled. The brakes were upwards of 700$ and are usually the worst part on these old Scouts...they work perfectly now.new starter ($80)new front Springs ($300)halfway overhauled the electrical system (mostly just the lighting). The body work and paint were about $2K alone.Brand new heavy-duty radiator ($400)I have a brand new turn signal switch thats still in the box--it will go with the scout. this switch will complete any other electrical issues with the rear lights (all the lights work, but can be a little touchy). Both gas tanks work and the gauge works for each of them. All the gauges work except for the oil pressure one.The top is in great shape and is relatively easy to take on and off. (just a bunch of bolts) This Scout came off the line with the tow-package option, which means that it has some upgraded features, including a heavy-duty rear bumper. I updated the wiring harness and regularly pull a 6x12 enclosed trailer with it. It tows wonderfully as if nothing was back there at all. I don't have a title for it, as its not necessary for a vehicle this old, but it is currently registered in my name in the state of RI, and I will provide a Bill of Sale, which will take care of any necessary paperwork. The Four wheel Drive is incredible on this monster and works perfectly (high and low). Its a four speed and the 304 V8 is one of the more desirable motor options. The Scout looks awesome, and attracts a lot of attention, but I wouldn't say its in "show" quality. Its a great candidate for a total restore, but i'm setting the reserve at 5K instead of 8K because I think its perfect for somebody who just wants a cool car and doesn't mind getting their hands a little dirty every once in a while. The Scout is a lot of fun and SUPER easy to work on. I was a novice mechanic but have turned into a confident home practitioner thanks to this old girl. The roof basket and off road lights won't come with the Scout unless we arrange otherwise (another few hundred or so, depending on what the winning bid is).
