Vehicle Detail
This is an extremely nice driver, I have replaced/refurbished many parts since purchasing this Mercedes in 2004. Only a few small things will make this Mercedes into a rare gem in your collection, or you can do nothing and use it as a driver. This car has a very colorful history starting in Germany. The first owners lived in Paris France (the front tag is original to the car and I have the rear tag also) Its second owner drove the car all over Europe and brought it to the Island of Crete in Greece where I purchased it in 2004. On my departure in 2005 from Greece my wife and I drove the car (two ferries) out of Greece, through Italy, Switzerland, France and into Belgium where I shipped it to Brunswick, Ga. Any work that I could not complete was done in Gulf Breeze, Fl at Robinson's Automotive. I have a record from the last owner showing what he had done to the car during his ownership and many records and photos of my adventures with it. This Mercedes was built for the European market therefore the speed odometer and mileage is in Kilometers.Below is more information to aid in bidding on the car. The photos speak for themselves. What: 1969 Mercedes 280sl Includes hard and soft top (new), 4-speed transmission attached to a straight six 2.8 liter engine with less than 25K (no receipts), repair manuals and books. European standards from the factory, This car was purchased in Souda Bay, Crete Greece and shipped to the USA. All replacement parts are original from SLS in Germany, Miller's East and Bud's Benz. Original color was Signal Fire Engine Red; now in Light Ivory which is also a Mercedes color. I have most of the history from the second owners. The antique French tags are real and can be registered in Europe. The Bad: The dash lights were dim for a while and are now out. The right rear wheel well has some rust showing through. The Good: Rear Axle: 2006 Replaced out of a 1971 Mercedes Sedan 3.5. This beefier rear axle installed with no modifications, perfect fit, to provide better highway gears. Replaced with new, all three coil springs and rubber mounts, rotors, rear brake lines steel and rubber, trailing arms bushings and bolts and leading arms donut bushings, fluids, outer seals and shocks. Blinkers, headlights, brake lights and running lights all work. Front Suspension: All front suspension components were replaced a few years before I purchased the car in 2004 and are in perfect working order. Engine Compartment: A fresh 280sl engine. New starter, new sparkplug wires, new electronic ignition components installed in the OEM distributor, new electronic coil, most of the rubber hoses and clamps replaced new, new positive and negative battery cables, new battery hold down with power cut off, new fan clutch, new horn, clutch, pressure plate, throw-out Bering , slave cylinder replaced 2009, all bushings on shifter linkage rods for the transmission replaced, new transmission rubber mount, new rubber cover on shifter, newly rebuilt fuel injection pump. Although the car has no AC I purchased a new $200 A/C crank pulley and installed it, new fuel filter, K&N air filter, new air hose, and new rubber mounts for the radiator. To make this a numbers matching car I also have the complete original long block engine that was pulled from the car. Underside: Both mufflers, center and rear replaced. The underside of the car has a rubberized undercoating to prevent rust, this undercoating was also sprayed into crevices and the sub-frame rails. This was done before my purchase. Dash: New RPM and speed cables, new heater control cables and knobs, new Sony 208 watt AM/FM CD Xplode stereo, new Alpine 250 watt front speakers, Interior: New carpets, seats recovered with new material, new door panels and new material, seatbelts replaced in 2006. Exterior: Painted in 2007, bulbs replaced throughout in 2005, new rubber headlight gaskets, new door seals, new trunk seal, new hard top seals, new hood badge. Trunk: New amplifier, base, spare tire and tire cover is there. Wheels have been powder coated and a new set of Michelin Hydo-Edge 60,000 mile tires mounted, new front rotors and brakes. Alignment was done with the mounting of the tires and still drives true. All the mechanical work that I could not do myself was done at a local shop in Gulf Breeze, Florida. This Mercedes stays garaged and is only driven on sunny days with premium fuel. I would not hesitate to drive this car across the country as I drove it across five countries in Europe to ship it. This car is for sale locally and I reserve the right to end the auction if the reserve has not been met. If you have any questions about the car please email or call me. If I do not answer the phone please leave a message and I will call you back. Thank you for lookingCall Rodney @ 850-341-4424
