Vehicle Detail
1971 Volvo 142S Good clean example ready for a daily driver, very sound candidate for full restoration. I have driven this vehicle all of about 3 miles since owning it - purchased last year, drove on flat city streets. I then drove up a hill and it stalled out near the top. Being a shade tree mechanic I replaced the fuel filter then looked into the carburetor and replaced the brass float with a new plastic one hoping this might resolve the issue. It did not. Starts and runs fine as long it is on flat ground. I then waxed it and stored it for winter with plans to replace the fuel sender and clean the fuel lines. At the beginning of the summer I started it again and it ran fine on flat ground and stalled out on the hill - while back at my garage it started leaking fuel at the discharge of the fuel pump. And there it has sat since May. Work has consumed all of my time and I have not been able to work on it or enjoy it - so, time to sell. History - the vehicle was originally sold in Oregon (I have decent records including original owners manual) - based on the records available the vehicle was then taken to Arizona where it was used for a few years and that is where I purchased it from. It has a very sound body. Following is my observations of vehicle: Engine/Mechanical- Original B20- Was converted to single Weber 32/38 - electric choke at some point- Starts and runs fine on flat surface (will need to have choke adjusted based on your climate)- Has A/C - I ran this early in the summer and it blew cold air- Exhaust as original - suspect recent (within last few years) replacement based on condition of mufflers.Suspension/Brakes- Appears no modifications made (original or original replaced parts)- rubber bushings all around look decent - although some evidence of cracking in some of the bushings- Brakes work great Electrical- All outside lights work- The turn signal switch works intermittently - sometimes only left sometimes only right - contacts either need cleaning or unit needs replacement.- Interior lights work and all switches work - dome light switch needs some attention- I turned the fan on for the heater and it squeals - needs lubrication or replacement - Radio does not work - have not checked the fuse - it is original and has original single speaker in rear. - The battery needs to be replaced - I have been charging it and using a car starter to supplement the battery.Body- Appears to be original paint - I waxed it and it shined to a decent luster- There is small surface rust on various points of the car - there is no paint bubbling, no evidence of through wall rusting and no evidence of any previous 'bondo' work that I can find- Small dents and dings on various panels- Front bumper nice and straight; rear bumper was impacted at some point and has a slight bend mostly on driver's side.- All of the glass is in good condition; the front windshield at one point looks like it was hit by a pebble and does have a chip and accompanying crack (chip about the size of a pen head with crack the defect is about the size of a nickle)- The underside looks to have the original protective coating intact and has no evidence of through wall rust, some surface rust on non-corrosion protected surfaces.Interior- All original as far as I can tell- The dash is cracked and the front windshield surround is warped - I have a fabric dashcover over it at this point- The door panels are in immaculate condition (in my opinion) original and unmolested- Passenger side rear arm rest does have slight tear- Drivers seat has tear in seat and seam separation on head rest- Carpet is in good condition (good use a cleaning though)- Otherwise all original good condition upholstery- Headliner is in very good condition - no evidence of tears or repairs - slightly loose and has to be tucked in on occasion in rear- Drivers side sunvisor is more used than passenger - and could use sprucing up - could use a replacement clip to keep it in place- Rearview mirror - mirror is good but plastic surround is brittle (been in sun too long) The vehicle is of course being sold as is - it will have to be towed or listed as non-working if you have it transported as it will not make it up any ramp or incline without stalling. I will include the original brass float and extra fuel filter to the buyer. The reserve is low at $500 and is 1/5 the cost I have in getting it here. If it sells for > $1500 I will include the fuel sender I purchased from IPD (new) ($200 value)If it sells for $2000+ I will also include brand new (unopened) 123Ignition (purchased from CVI) I was going to use for conversion to breaker-less ($400 value) For any volvo aficionados I also have panasport 'knock-offs' brand new - these were originally intended for an early model 122 I used to own - they are 5-4.5" bolt pattern (which is 1964 and earlier I believe) they can be included in the sell as well for the right price.
