Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 This is a project car that can be driven while you are waiting to get working on it. Having had a 1972 1800E for 17 years (and having regretted selling it since about 3 months afterwards), I picked up this 1800 ES 6 years ago. I chose this one since it had a solid body without visible rust. (Those who have looked at non-restored or older restored P1800s know that major rust just below the doors and/or around the rear wheel wells is the norm.) It had sat for 8 years before I got it, so the first year was cleaning it up and getting it running, new battery, fuel pump, and tires, etc. Since then, additional work includes front shocks, front and rear control arm bushings, U-joints, and drive shaft support bearing. I haven’t had the time to work on the interior or exterior the last couple of years, so I want someone who has the time to work on it or drive it regularly to have it. I have probably driven it 1000 miles the last 5 years, and it begs for more than that. Despite needing restoration, it still drew comments and looks from several folks when I was running errands a couple of days ago (it doesn’t look bad from 20’). The engine is the fuel injected 2.0 liter 4 cylinder with the 4 speed manual with electronic overdrive. With this preferred transmission, it has better pickup and cruises at lower revs than the automatic I had in my ’72. It passed Colorado emissions 5 years ago when I got the historical plates. The engine has a reputation for being bomb proof. It does have minor oil leaks as would be expected for a car of this vintage in which the engine hasn’t been recently rebuilt. To my non-expert eye, the body is solid and rust free except for a little rust on about a 6” stretch on the thin metal piece below the rocker panels on either side, and the underneath support piece between the door and the front wheel on the drivers side which appears to have been dented at some point and subsequently rusted (see photos). The previous owner said that it had been repainted at some point, and at that point the chrome and side view mirrors were removed (and are not included with the car). I have included side view mirrors that I picked up from a little older P1800 (one with the glass, one without) which could be put on. (Note that the spacing between screws for the mirror on the included ones is different from the spacing on the original screw holes.) There is a dent in the left rear of about ½” penetration with a length of about 8” (see picture). The paint is quite oxidized and it will need to be repainted. Underneath, the muffler/exhaust needs replacing as do the canvas retention straps on the rear shocks. The weather stripping around the doors and the roll down windows needs replacing. The brakes probably ought to be bled some time. The interior needs a complete redoing, including the dash (which is badly cracked – one source listed them for about $145). The gauges all appear to work reasonably (except for the non-original radio). The odometer shows 043,262 and works, but I have no idea if this is the true mileage (probably not). The controller pistons for holding up the tailgate are included but will either need to be rebuilt or replaced since they appear to be frozen. The plastic cover on the back of the rear view mirror is deteriorating. The windows are in reasonable shape. The front windshield is a little pitted from normal use and has a small smoky area of maybe 1” by 5” in the extreme lower left (minor enough so that I didn’t notice it for several years). Included are a Haynes manual, a Volvo 1800 ES service manual (on CD), and a P1800 1969-73 Parts Catalogue (385 pages on CD). I encourage you to come look at it/drive it – I am located in the SW Denver area. Please call with any questions before bidding: 303-697-1663. I will expect a $500 deposit within 2 days (Paypal is fine) and the balance within 7 days from the end of the auction. Please plan on picking it up within 14 days unless other arrangements are made in advance.
