Vehicle Detail

Hi - I am helping sell this car for a friend, Peter Egan, who while a great writer and a good mechanic, needs support in selling his car on ebay. I asked him to write a short article on this car. If you are interested in buying the car and have further questions, please call him. His # is 608-873-8387.Thanks - Mike Car for Sale: 1934 Ford Fordor Deluxe Sedan With only 36,594 original miles on the odometer, this car is an immaculate older restoration that came out of the South and has absolutely no rust or corrosion anywhere, or any sign of past body damage. The underside and frame look like new, and are free of any rust-pitting. The wool Taupe interior is all original, except for the headliner, which I just had redone last month. It has its original (optional) Potter Trunk and spare tire cover, in excellent condition The car was repainted its original Dearborn Blue with straw yellow wheels and side stripe, probably in the Eighties or late Seventies. The paint is beautiful, except for some very minor checking near the running board on the right fender and slight discoloration from gasoline near the fuel filler at the left rear. Door, window and body panel fit are all perfect. I bought this car in Arlington, Texas, 3 years ago and since then have installed all new original-style lever-arm hydraulic shock absorbers and spring shackles, as well as new hoses, fan belt, water pumps and wiper, and had the distributor rebuilt with new bushings and rotor, and properly timed. Also removed the radiator and had it cleaned and pressure tested, and cleaned and lubricated the leaf springs, front and rear. The previous owner had just had the carburetor rebuilt and installed a new battery and all new correct Firestone Deluxe Champion tires from Coker—including the spare--when I bought the car, less than 2000 miles ago. He also installed a new, correctly shaped aluminum gas tank, which is set up to accept the original-style gas gauge sender The engine is the original 21-stud Flathead with its aluminum factory heads—which were standard in 1934, and it appears to be undisturbed except for the water pumps and new head gaskets I installed. I also installed a good used oil pan, as the original had a small pinhole leak near the rear. I work for Road & Track magazine and bought the car three years ago to do a road trip and feature story for the magazine (“The Dillinger Trail”), tracing the route bank robber John Dillinger took through the Midwest. I spent a winter getting the car ready to make the trip, and my wife and I drove it 1400 miles in one week, from Wisconsin to southern Indiana, through Chicago and up to northern Wisconsin, where Dillinger had his famous shoot-out with the FBI at Little Bohemia in 1934. The car ran beautifully on the whole trip and required no repairs. As a gangster side-light, this is the exact year and model Ford that Bonnie & Clyde were driving in when they were gunned down in 1934, right down to the Potter Trunk and dual horns, and this car participated in a Bonnie & Clyde days festival in Dallas and was featured in the local papers.. This car is happiest cruising at 50 to 55 mph on rural roads, though it had no trouble handling Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway and a few sections of Interstate on our trip. The car doesn’t overheat when driven faster, but the newer-style water pumps tend to pump water out the radiator overflow pipe if you drive continuously in the 60 mph range. Being a Southern car, it has no thermostats, but could probably use them to slow down the water flow. It actually tends to run cool in normal driving. Other faults? Typically for older Fords, the transmission can be made to jump out of 2nd gear if you accelerate hard and then back off the throttle suddenly, though this almost never occurs in normal driving. Also, the fuel gauge doesn’t work (I have a repair kit, but haven’t gotten around to it) and the dome light doesn’t light. Everything else works fine—wipers, lights, gauges, etc. Otherwise this is a lovely car and a great driver that I would not hesitate to take on another long trip right now. I drive it regularly to run errands or go to local car gatherings, and everybody loves to see it on the road—or ride in it. It’s had a recent oil change and it’s ready to go.
