Vehicle Detail

Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE 1974 BMW 3.0 CS Manual transmission, original engine and 4 speed trans. Original tear free tan leather interior, period working Blaupunkt Manhattan cassette deck with 4 channel amp and 4 Blaupunkt speakers. Bilstein shock/struts all the way around. Good driver as it is or restore at your leisure. I pulled this car from a local barn where it had sat (on dry concrete) for the last 13 years. I have cleaned it up and repaired the mechanicals to the point where one could use it as a daily or weekend run about. It has new brake calipers, pads and rotors on all four corners. I used Pagid pads and German rotors. Front bearings where repacked, hydraulics have all been bled out and work well. Gas was drained and flushed, Carbs where cleaned and new filters fitted. Fuel and water hoses where replaced in the engine bay as needed. It came with16" BBS wheels circa 1983, 8J wide for the rear and 7 for the front. They where blasted, painted silver, and mounted with Goodyear Eagles 215 55 in the rear and 205 55 in the front. Lets talk rust. This car has lived its life in NY/ NJ. It wears a 15 year old respray in the original color, peeling in some spots due to improper base prep. I have done some clean up to make the car presentable. A restoration is in this cars future at some point for sure. I've looked at a bunch of these cars and this is by no means the worst I have seen. It's middle of the road for the northeast. I have reciepts for at least one of the repairs totaling over $3000 The first and most obvious area is the right side shock tower. The repair was done pretty well and the area is structurally sound. It was never painted from the top side (not sure why), however the underside was coated. They stuck on some look alike sound deadening and left it at that. I removed this material, cleaned up the surface rust and gave it a quick coat of paint. Drivers shock tower appears original. Small spot of rust near headlamp by battery. The next area is behind fuse box. Nobody ever mentions this spot, but it is typical. I'm sure some of the 15K cars for sale have this spot and nobody knows. Floors are still intact and original, they are getting soft around the large circular plug on both left and right sides. Passenger side lower quarter panel area is the worst visible spot on the car, where an old rust repair was done and not eliminated totally. Passenger door was dented at some point in the past, I ground the rust off and gave it a quick spray to prevent it rusting further. Please note before and after pictures of all these areas. I'm not covering anything up here, just tidying. Spare tire well has a soft spot toward the front where the rubber drain plug is. The rest of the well is just crusty. This should cover everything but please look over the pictures and if you have questions please ask! This car is great to drive. It starts willingly, runs smoothly, goes straight down the road, no shakes or rattles. The dual Webber DGV carburettor set up on this is very reliable and offers good drivability and tune-abilty. It has an aftermarket header that looks very well made. The muffler is OEM BMW and is very solid, still has sticker on it. I made a repair to the pipes where they meet the front muffler. Bilsteins are older but still feel great on the street. Power windows work well on both sides. You could have some real fun with this car and worry about the rest later. Maybe much later. Read this article by Rob Siegel, author of "The Hack Mechanic" in the BMW CCA Roundel magazine. He does a great job describing rust in these cars. http://www.robsiegel.com/3.0cs/1973%20BMW%203.0cs%20ad2.html I have almost 50 pictures of this car on photobucket at this link. http://photobucket.com/BMW30CS (You may need to cut and paste) Please take a look. Thanks !!
