Vehicle Detail
1972 Volvo 1800ES sportwagon This car was my father’s car since 1992. When he bought it, it had just come out of storage from a barn in Oklahoma for 14 years. He then went and had the dings and scrapes pulled and then the whole car was painted. He drove it for 4 years before moving onto his boat and I got it in 1997. I had it in storage now since 1998. When I got the car, it needed a fuel pump which I replaced and drove it over to the storage facility however, now it needs a fuel pump again as it is probably gummed up. I pulled it out of storage three weeks ago, and now have it for sale to someone who can do something with it. The facts: 1972 1800ES, 87,xxx miles on the car, B-20 injected motor, Borg-Warner 35 automatic transmission, factory air conditioning. Gold exterior over tan interior. Car is complete minus two trim rings on the wheels. Clean Pennsylvania title in my name. A project for sure, but it has a solid foundation to work with. Front end: The engine turns clean, and puts over 30+ pounds of oil pressure just with the starter. My father was very adamant about his oil changes and fluids servicing. Hood hinges are solid and not pulling out from the attachments, body is solid under the inner fender rails. Grill surround and insert are original and dent-free. That alone is worth $500.00(no I will not pull it off and sell it separate). Some bubbling around the drivers side headlight area. Windshield is clean and chip free. Bumper is dent free although slightly pushed on the driver’s side, see the pictures. Sides: Both sides need rockers as is common with 1800’s. The drivers side is poor, the passengers is toast. Most of this I chalk up to poor prep work prior to painting, the passenger’s side rocker had the paint pulling away in a large section when it came out of storage telling me the body shop didn’t do proper work down low. Inner rockers are good shape to spite the outters. The undersides of the car is surprisingly solid. The jacking points and outriggers are solid and strong as you can see by the pictures. The floors are good as well. It’s a shame the rockers are bad, they make the rest of the body look worse than it is. All trim is there, with the usual dings on the side spears, but it is complete. All lights and lenses are good as well. The roof has a base for a ham radio antenna, but that is not a big issue for a driving car that may have a CB or other rig for the road. Side windows are good, the doors need new window scraper rubbers for sure. Rear: Bumper is clean and dent-free. The rear is clean and solid except for a section behind the right wheel. The rear facia under the glass is great shape and glass hatch is as well. Inside the trunk area, the spare tire well and side compartments are solid and the spare is there with a new tire still on it. Interior: Interior needs redone. Front seats are beat, the upper and lower dash pads need replaced, carpet may be usable but definitely needs pulled and scrubbed. All the instruments work, the clock is a 140 series unit, but is working and looks correct. Aftermarket “shafted” radio installed and works. The rear deck carpet needs cleaned badly. The door seals and trunk seal need replaced as I’m sure numerous other things will too. Mechanical: I haven’t pushed hard on the brakes to see if they will free-up or not, the car rolls and that was more important to be able to move it around. There is a set of ipd stainless braided brake lines that go with the car. If I had access to another fuel pump to start the car, I would have been happier, but I don’t. I am confident that the engine is not a toad. The exhaust is very good shape as you can see from the photos. The bushings, I see the front lowers could use replacing. Shock wise, I think my father replaced it with KYBs when he was driving it, but I’m not sure right now. Fan motor works, wipers work, lights came on and appeared functioning. Bottom Line: The car is in North-Central Pennsylvania. I have had the car now for a fair amount of time, but don’t have the luxury of being able to get to this project for the foreseeable future. It is for auction, as-is where-is. I can help with loading it up, and if you live within 200 miles, we may be able to work out something on delivery. I request a $500.00 deposit within 2 days of the end of the auction, with the balance in 7 days or less. I will try to answer any questions you may have about the car and its’ condition, I would rather be up front with any potential buyers than have any issues later. It is a good start for an 1800 project and I have a clean valid Pennsylvania title in my name for transfer. She may not be real pretty right now, but neither was my P210 when I brought her home.
