Vehicle Detail
1988 BMW M6 - 64,000 mi - $22,900 1988 BMW M6 USA version, Cinnabar Red, 5-speed manual, tan leather, VIN WBAEE1414J2561644. Original AZ car. Call Robert in Tempe at four-eight-zero-345-seven-nine-one-nine. Scroll down for more pictures. I've Seen This M6 Before. Why Removed and Relisted? Last week I removed the listing and performed a comprehensive BMW Inspection II. Fluids, oil change, adjusted the valves. The works. See the maintanance history below for details. Equipment Standard equipment: Air Conditioning front and rear, Cruise Control, Leather Interior, Power Locks, Power Seats, Power Steering, Power Windows, Power side mirrors, Power Sunroof, Nine-function trip computer, Drivers Side airbag, Anti-lock brakes, Rear beverage cooler, Rear window shade, Tool kit, Full size spare tire, limited slip differential. About the leather: Not only are the seats leather, but the seat backs, doors, center console, rear console, sun visors, arm rests, glovebox, knee board are all in leather. The only vinyl is a section on and around the moonroof. Modifications As 3rd owner, I've owned this car since July 1992. The car is all original, except for the following changes: The AC system was converted to R134a in 2003. The engine computer chip was replaced with the Dinan version in 1997 which increased the horsepower from 256 to 300. I still have the original BMW chip, and you may have it. The rear auto-level suspension was replaced with Dinan shocks and springs in 1994. I still have the original suspension parts too. The metric TRX wheel rims were replaced in 1998 with 17x8 BBS rims with offsets specifically for the M6. I don't have the original TRX rims, and I'm glad they're gone. I'm currently running Potenza RE760 sport, 235/45R-17 94W (W=168 mph) with 2,800 mi on them. These are the nicest tires this car has ever seen, an excellent grip with good smoothness and little noise. Production Numbers From 1976 through 1989, BMW produced 86,216 E24 six series, and imported 28,502 into the US. The M car, which had improved suspension and engine-driveline, was produced from 1984 to 1989. Only 5,855 M's were produced and only 1,767 made it into the US in 1987 and 1988. This car is a 1988, the rarest production year when only 318 US models were built. (From 6 series Enthusiast's Companion, Jeremy Walton) Maintenance History Most recent notable work going backwards: BMW Inspection II, replaced hood supports, all coolant hoses, radiator, thermostat, belts, fan clutch, and idler arm bushing. Performed steering alignment (all on 3/12), New High pressure power steering hose (3/08), New Fuel pressure regulator (3/08), New coolant reservoir and cap (3/08), New main external fuel pump (9/06), Four new fuel lines in engine compartment (9/06), New clutch master and slave cylinders (5/06), New Brake accumulator (2/06), New idle control valve (2/06), Rebuilt driveshaft with replaceable U-joints (2/06), New Rear auxiliary refrigerant valve (8/05), New expansion valve inside dash including replacement of blend air door motor (8/04), New AC blower motor (8/04), Convert to R134a - New compressor, fittings, expansion valve, dryer and high-pressure lines (5/03). I have all records since new. Everything on the car like air conditioning, power seats, power mirrors etc. all works perfectly. Besides the Car, Other Things You Get You will also get the electrical troubleshooting manual, specifically for this year and model. This book contains all the electrical schematics and troubleshooting procedures for the car. I also have the 6 series Enthusiast's Companion book by Jeremy Walton, 218 pgs. You also get some spare (new) parts that I've collected over the years, some touch-up paint, and the original items removed from the car in case you want to return it to stock condition. I also have all service records since new (from previous owners too). I have the Road and Track Sept 1984 issue that lists the fastest cars money can buy (The M6 is in the list). And a set of sheepskins for the front seats. Here are two pages from the 1984 issue of Road and Track. Ownership Expectations This car is fast. And smooth. When you drive it, people stop what they are doing, and look to stare. Most don't know what it is. They just know that the shape, color, chrome and lines are like nothing else on the road. But you know it will do way over 150. I've only had it up to about 110 and it was still pulling you back into the seat - seemingly like a jet airplane. With the Dinan chip, max horsepower is just before redline. Shift there and enjoy the ride. As for cost of ownership, well, its a BMW. Expect normal costs there. The car is more reliable than most other BMW's so that should help. Registering the car in AZ is under $30, not bad for a car that originally listed for $60,000. Full coverage insurance runs me about $520 a year. The paint on the car is original base with no clear coat. BMW metal flake clear coats of the 80's and 90's were notorious for oxidizing and fading away enough to require repainting. But not cinnabar red. It won't fade. It also means that if you get a nick or scratch, even if it's down to the metal, touchup is easy. After the paint dries, you carefully sand the high spots, and finish with a polish. It will pass the microscope test. Also, the paint is soft, meaning it scratches easily, but polishes up very well. Why am I Selling this Beautiful Car? Both my kids said I shouldn't sell it. My brother said I'm going to miss an emotional attachment to it. They may be right, but as I get older, I'm wanting things to be softer, quieter, and automatic. I don't drive it much and own too many other cars. About the Photos Below The photos below are meant to show the car in its entirety, but if you don't see something, I can send it to you. The second to last photo shows the 10 cm tear in the passenger's leather seat bolster covering. The last photo shows the drivers seat upper left bolster, which shows the leather warn down mostly to suede in a patch about 2 inches long. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the viewing photos as much as I did taking them.
