I'm selling my 1999 BMW 540it with sport package and aftermarket m-tech bumper and HID headlights. I would not be selling but unfortunately when driving home from work one day the check engine light came on and the engine started running bad. When i got home i read the engine code and got P0011 (Camshaft Position Accuator A - Bank 1 timing over advanced). After researching on BMW forums it looked like the timing chain guide rail had broken, which is made of plastic that gets brittle after time, and allowed the timing to advance. I got a quick estimate from the local independent mechanic and he came back with a estimated $2000-$2500 repair. The labor report estimates 20+ hours and i believe parts would be about $500 and $500 in special tools (which might be able to rent for cheaper). I'm selling the car as is and i don't guarantee that the timing chain rail is the issue but believe it is to the best of my knoweldge. Please do your own research prior to bidding. The car, when running, was in good condition with no other mechanical issues and only has a few small scratches and maybe a few small dings. Interior is in good shape for its age with no major defects. The car has the factory sports package and was a very fun car to drive. In running condition the vehicle would easily be worth $6000 dollars so for an avide do-it-yourselfer or mechanic this would be an excellent vehicle to fix and make a some money or have a very cheap sport wagon.
