Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a classic turbo diesel CD. It belongs to a friend of mine who owns two of these and has decided to sell this one. He travels a lot and does not have time to sell something on E-bay so I am listing it for him. I am re-listing this item because when I went out to move the car today, I was going to drive it a little bit just to let it run. When I turned on the air conditioning it was not blowing cold which it previously was doing. The AC compressor engages and disengages with the switch, the clutch engages but it doesn't get cold inside the car. I put a pressure gauge on the system and it's holding a charge, so I feel fairly certain that it must be something internal in the compressor. When I tried to edit the listing it would not allow me to do so, so I cancelled the listing because I did not want to misrepresent the vehicle in any way. I will try to recheck the system this week and see if I can diagnose the problem further, but I wanted to be completely honest in my representation of the vehicle. I tried to take a lot of pictures of the vehicle so that the buyer can have a good perspective of the car. I have had this car about one week so I have had a chance to drive it. I have had Mercedes diesels for many years and in my opinion this is the best motor they ever made. It is commonly referred to as "the million mile motor" if you keep the valves adjusted and the oil changed they just run forever. The motor on this car fires right up with no hesitation. When you are driving the car the turbo spools up as it is suppose to, in fact this is one of the peppier diesels that I have ever driven. The transmission shifts with no hesitation and there is no vibrations at high RPM's or high speeds. It is obvious to me that this motor has been maintained, the only mechanical issue that I found is that when you turn the key off, it takes a few seconds for the engine to stop. These are not electronic ignition cars, they work on a vacuum solenoid that shuts the fuel supply off to the engine, this is how Mercedes designed the car. When there is the slight hesitation in shut off, it means that there is a vacuum leak some place in the vacuum lines. This is not a problem in my opinion, it is just something that I wanted to address. As I hope you can see from the pictures the car is solid and straight and for a 28 year old vehicle it looks good. These vehicles consistently get around 25 mpg around town and I have averaged over 30 on the highway in some of mine. The Mercedes CD's with the 5 cylinder diesels are classic not only in their style but in their performance, they quit making this car is 1985 and they have become collector's items. There is no rust at the jack ports or around the doors, this is usually where these rust. There are a few cosmetic issues as I hope you can see from the pictures, there are some cracks and tears in the front seats but they have genuine sheepskin covers on them. The sunroof opens but I had to help it close, I think it just needs to be lubricated. The front windows work fine, the rear windows seem to have some issues, I would venture to say it is a switch, but I have not had a chance to check them. I pulled the spare tire out so that you could see that there is no rust there, that is another place they tend to rust. All the lights work, wipers, speedometer, and tachometer work, and a big thing on these, the odometer works so this is accurate mileage. The original radio has been replaced with an AM/FM CD player that works. The tires are fair to good, I would estimate another 5,000 to 10,000 miles. Overall this is a nice CD and with the motor as strong as it is, I believe it has a lot of miles left in it. As I said before, I tried to take enough pictures and tried to describe in enough detail so that the winning bidder will not have any major surprises. Having driven the vehicle I believe the winner bidder could fly in to Atlanta (I live in one of the suburbs) and drive the car home without any problems. However, with that being said, I am selling the car for a good fried of mine and I can not and he does not offer any warranty on this vehicle written or implied, and as such is being sold "as is". He has placed a very realistic reserve price so that you could own a classic Mercedes Benz without paying a premium price. The owner is out of town and will be out of town when this auction ends, but I have had the title put in my name so that I can sign it over at the end of the auction. I have done my best to describe the vehicle in an honest and accurate way. If you do have any questions, please feel free to email me and I will respond as quickly as I can.
