Go ahead…scroll down and see for yourself… Owning this fabulous car will make you feel that way every time you see and drive it. Built some years ago on a donor ’65 Mustang, this older Cobra kit is among the last of the true, hairy-chested, body-on-frame, muscle-car-era, Roadsters. With a brawny 427 V8 and automatic transmission, the car was made be easily driven, always fast, and always topless. With the average car's lifespan being about a dozen years and the attrition rate of these replicas often accelerated by careless, second-hand owners, it'd be a nice surprise to find an example of the species that, despite being many years old, still shines and sparkles like a late-model. The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of open-air enthusiasts. The wonderful ‘65 Cobra Replica presented here is a true survivor. It never suffered from neglect and looks as original as one could ever hope for. Coming from an estate, we really don’t have a great deal of information about the builder or the many fascinating features. We do know that it looks fantastic and runs like a bat out of Hell! If anyone recognizes this fine replica and would like to share any information about who may have built it, when or where, we’d be most grateful and happy to post in the Q & A at the bottom of the listing. Let's have a closer look now. Exterior: After many decades on the road, the fiberglass body panels and trim speaks volumes about the quality construction as well as the loving care this Cobra has always received and underscores the car's Southern California provenance. The outside appears to have been professionally refinished to a very nice, driver quality. Every diamond has its flaws: The original chrome has some VERY minor pitting… ...but (as seen by the photos) there is still plenty of sparkle and shine and the frame, sills and floorboards are SOLID. There are a few VERY MINOR scuffs, chips and scratches but all these flaws are cosmetic and can certainly be expected on older cars. Most importantly, there is absolutely NO evidence of major corrosion, collision repair or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights. Newer BF Goodrich tires offer that great collector sports car look and mag wheel detail is amazing. Speaking of detail, let us stress how immaculate the body is, how shiny the bumpers, how glossy the paint: This one is that clean! Let's take a look under the hood. Engine & Mechanical: The engine compartment looks fantastic. Beyond routine tune-ups & oil changes, thousands of dollars were invested into preventative maintenance, mainly to the engine, its ancillaries, suspension and braking systems. The 427 Cubic Inch, eight cylinder power plant inhales through dual carburetors. It sounds crisp, runs smoothly and accelerates like a rocket! No wear item has been left unattended; as a result, this 427 is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Yes, any Ford drivetrain can be a very tough and reliable automobile with a bit of preventative maintenance. We'll inspect the interior next, shall we? Though a bit sun faded, the black vinyl upholstery is as clean as can be. The bucket seats still look great… …as do the door panels, cut pile carpeting, dash and full instrumentation. A full array of gauges all work flawlessly. Even the clock works! The carpeted trunk contains the battery and car cover. In short, everything looks and operates as it should. Drivability: Invigorating is the word that best describes this Cobra experience. The Roadster runs like a cheetah on the prowl. Its 60’s suspension and huge muscles will amaze you. In any climate, the powerful 8-cylinder engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly through the gears without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror. Warmed up, coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs at high speeds. Throwing this Cobra through the curves, the strong engine emanates throaty, lusty sounds. The automatic transmission shifts very smooth and precise. The disk brakes anchor the car securely, in a straight line, and without any hint of fading. Aided by newer, BF Goodrich Radial TA’s, handling and braking are simple and superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls coming from the chassis or suspension. All in all, this Cobra is a thoroughly convincing performer and a joy to drive! In fact, the “old school” NON-POWER steering makes a mockery of the rubberized, over-assisted control mechanisms that pass for most modern cars' guidance systems. Though heavy handed, the steering is smooth, discreet, very precise and controllable. Gung-ho throttle steer is available if you're in the mood, well-mannered road-holding if you're not. The Ford’s chassis inspires with its unsophisticated charm; its transparency is convincing. Everything works on this Cobra, from lights and switches to the windshield wipers. No turn signals! Despite its age, the car definitely is ready to be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live. Pound for pound, Shelby Cobra was one of the fastest, most fun post-war sports cars ever. This Cobra replica is quickly becoming a collectible classic with fantastic appreciation potential, one that can easily serve as a reliable daily driver. To make things even better, the car runs on regular gas and is smog exempt in California. Reasonably priced spares and affordable classic car insurance are readily available.
