Vehicle Detail
1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible "Triple Black" The opening picture that you see in the galley is what I envisioned for this Cutlass. I have personally done this transformation several times in the past, and I just wanted the eBay bidding audience to see how fantastic this car can become. This is an awesome opportunity to purchase an extremely rare muscle car convertible at a nominal price. I had been trying to talk the prior owners husband into talking his wife into selling this Oldsmobile for many years. I can't remember how long, but I know it was over a decade. He claimed she would never give up her highschool car that she loved so much. Nevertheless, I would check in every year or two without any success. As fate would have it, one day a buddy saw a black convertible for sale on the side of the road. He said it looks exactly like the type of car I always look for. I asked him where it was, and after he told me I knew it was same car. I raced over there the first chance I had and sure enough it was. There was a new addition to their family, so that gave the wife the incentive to finally part with thee old girl. In retrospect I most likely overpaid, but then again it sure is hard to put a price on a car that you've waited over a decade to purchase. I mainly gave her what I did for sentimental reasons, and to put my quest to rest. I went to pick the car up in a brutal snow storm, and the negotiations took quite awhile, but we finally agreed on an amount to make us both satisfied. I've owned over 30 of these cars in my life, so I know firsthand how incredible they can be. I've never owned one with power windows and power door locks, and I certainly never thought I would have the chance to own a triple black one. It is with much regret that I have to part with this car after waiting so long for it, but I have some pressing issues myself that must be taken care of immediately. Please have all of your funds in order prior to placing your bid. I'm only looking to get something close to what I paid, so this will be a "No Reserve" auction. I've been a 442 guy for over 35 years, so I know how hard it is to find a triple black 1972 convertible with these kind of options. I would normally transform this type of car into a W-30. Although I always like to start with a car that was ordered from the factory with the 442 option. I'm sure I don't have to mention to anyone looking at this description, that regardless if you make a W-30 out of a Cutlass Supreme or a 442, they are both worth a bundle. I will explain all about the 1972 model year. Starting in 1972 the 442 had to be ordered as an option. Prior to 1972 the vin numbers on all 442's started out with 344. That was the way to determine if that specific car was ordered from the factory as a 442 model. However in 1972 you can only verify the engine size, and whether the engine block matches the vin number. According to the OldFaqs website that anyone can look up online, 1971 was the last year that the 442 came as a separate model. They also state that there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972. The 442 was an ordered option in 1972 whether it was ordered as a 442 from the factory, or a dealer installed the 442 options, or a private owner installed all the 442 options. These models are all considered Cutlass Supreme or Cutlass S bodies. This is why all 442 convertibles from 1972 have Cutlass Supreme on the glove box door. This Oldsmobile is the perfect candidate to create an Oldsmobile 442 W-30 triple black beauty convertible. I would suggest whites stripes on a ram-air hood with body side stripes. Heck, throw on a whale tale too while you're at it. All of the 442 replacement parts are available through a wide variety of classic car parts suppliers at reasonable prices. I will supply a detailed list of the suppliers that I have used in the past to the winning bidder at their request. I've only owned this car since the middle of January, so I'll describe what I know. The mileage is believed to be correct and original at just over 89,000. This car has a Rocket 350 with an Edelbrock Street Dominator hi-rise aluminum intake manifold, and an Edelbrock 4 barrel carberator. The engine compartment detailing has already been started. I know how important having the numbers match on the engine block are, so I checked them myself. The previous owner told me that the engine is numbers matching. I was able to see two number 4's with a space in between to fit several other numbers, so I believe she was telling the truth. The vin number ends in M243224, so those numbers should show on a tab under the power steering pump. I just didn't want to sand away on that tab any further. Seeing those two 4's were good enough to satisfy my curiousity. The transmission is a turbo 350. The previous owner had apparently restored this car with her father back in the mid 1980's. She drove and enjoyed it for several years after that, but it has been sitting for many many years, so I am selling it as needing a full restoration. I would say that the undercarriage will need some attention, and the trunk pan will need a portion of the left side replaced. Although a guy or girl handy with a welder may choose to do some patchwork. The trunk lip and the gasket that runs around the trunk lip are still in good shape. The trunk lid itself has some filler in it, but it can be used, or if you find yourself a nicer one it can be replaced. All in all, I believe all of the body panels can still be used in the restoration. The body on this car really does look good from 5 or 10 feet away. The trunk has a new trunk mat, and carries a full size spare with a jack and crow bar. The fenders are in nice condition, and still have both bolts in the bottom of both sides. The front and rear bumpers still appear straight, and have pretty nice chrome on them. Naturally to make the car really sweet you would want to have the bumpers re-chromed, but I would rate them as drivers quality. It is very hard to find a 40 year old convertible in relatively good condition as seen in the pictures. This car has dual sport mirrors with the drivers side being remote controlled. I think the body side molding may be original. The lower rocker chrome still looks pretty good. All four stainless steel wheel opening moldings are in fairly nice condition. In fact I would say that all of the chrome on this car is in drivers quality condition or better. The head lights, and the bright lights both work as they should. The turn signals blink on both sides, and all four tail light lenses are in good condition with no cracks. All four cornering lights work nicely, and the front fender cornering lights blink when the turn signals are applied. I didn't see any signs of this car ever being involved in an accident. Before she decided to sell her prize possession she replaced the battery, and had the entire car checked to make sure it was roadworthy. The oil and filter were recently changed. This car has power steering, and front power disc brakes. She recently replaced the brake and fuel lines from the front to the back. The dual exhaust looks very good and sounds strong with brand new chrome exhaust tips. This car has power windows, and power door locks. Very few of these cars were ordered with those rare options. The power locks still work great, but I think a fuse is blown for the power windows. This car was also ordered with air conditioning from the factory. She told me that the A/C compressor was replaced and does work. The compressor looks like new, and everything seems to be hooked up and in place, but it's still too cold around here to test it out. This car has an Olds sport wheel and the dashboard is in nice shape. The speedometer, odometer, and gas gauge all work, but the clock is stuck on 4:42, the best time of the day. This car came with a bench seat, but now has bucket seats that will need to be re-covered, and a console that will need to be hooked up. There are newer bucket seat covers on the bucket seats to make them look nice until the seats get recovered. The carpet was replaced, and shows almost like new with new floor mats. The front door panels look almost like new. There is a Sony detachable faceplate AM/FM stereo with a cassette player inside. The glove box has a Sony 10 disc CD player mounted inside, and there is a huge power amp mounted under the front drivers bucket seat. The entire stereo system shows power, but there is no sound coming through the Infinity speakers. Therefore the stereo system will need some looking into, but it should be something minor. The raised white lettered Performance Radial GT's have nice tread on them. They are mounted on a set of four Super Stock II wheels painted to match the body with four beauty trim rings, and four bolt on center caps. The paint can be considered drivers quality. The convertible top is in pretty good shape, but does have minor imperfection. It has a glass back window not plastic. It goes up and down nicely, and I would say that it can be used for years until the next owner decides to replace it. This is the type of car that would be great for a father and son project. It can be driven while it is being restored. The Nada Classic Cars Price Guide has the 1972 Cutlass 442 Convertible listed for $41,600 in high, $25,200 in average, and $14,650 in low condition. This car can be made into whatever you would like it to be. What you see is what you get! I try to list everything I can think of when I write a description. If there is anything else that you would like to know I pride myself in answering every question in explicit detail with the utmost honesty. Please ask as many questions as you like if you are unsure of anything prior to placing a bid. These classic cars have been known to consistently escalate in value. Don't miss out on this chance to own one of the nicest driving and handling muscle cars ever made. Once again, If you are serious about owning this droptop, please only bid what you have available to spend at the close of this auction. This car runs, stops, and steers very straight! The last triple black 442 W-30 I finished was a real 442 done with gold stripes, and turned out beautiful. It was sold to a fortunate winning bidder from France. Only the Lord knows where this one will end up. This cool old Oldsmobile will sell to the highest bidder on Monday evening at 5:00 pm Pacific time, 7:00 pm Central time, and 8:00 pm Eastern time. Good Luck and Happy Bidding!
