Vehicle Detail
General: Up for sale is my 1996 Ford Ranger. My wife bought this for me as a birthday gift back in 2007. She purchased it at an estate auction. The truck was very clean and very stock. Had about 76,000 miles on it when I got it. It has been my daily driver since I got it. I have modified it to my liking. I left the engine totally stock. It runs great with no check engine light, so I just never messed with it. The first thing I did was lower it 2” in the rear to level it out. I accomplished this by flipping the rear shackle hangers upside down. After that, I got the 17”x9” Cragar soft 8 wheels with 245/45R17 tires. This setup worked great, but after about a year, I wanted it to be lower. Suspension: I used DJM Dream Beams for the front suspension, as well as front springs from a Ranger Splash, since they are 1” lower than the regular Ranger. For the rear, I left the shackles reversed, and added the DJM axle flip kit. I also installed a bolt-in mini C-notch for above rear axle. It gives the axle an extra 3" to move up without contacting the frame. The front shocks are Monroe standard replacement shocks for a ‘96 Ranger. The rear shocks are Monroe standard replacement shocks for a ’94 Nissan Hard-body pickup. The shocks for that model truck have the same mounts as the Ranger, but they are about 5” shorter overall. To improve the handling, I installed a rear swaybar from a Bronco-II. This was a direct bolt-in. The axle had mounts for the swaybar, and the frame already had holes for the swaybar end links. This, combined with the low stance of the truck make it handle like it's on rails! All of that equates to about 5” of drop in the front and 7” in the rear. Since I used standard replacement shocks and factory springs, this truck rides just like it did before I lowered it. It handles bumps and potholes very well, even on Oklahoma’s cruddy roads. Truck doesn’t bottom out, either. The lowest hanging part was the transmission cross member. That was replaced with a ½” thick flat steel cross member made especially for lowered Rangers. Everything aligns perfectly. Steering wheel is centered while driving, doesn’t pull one way or the other, and has no vibrations. Interior: Inside, the truck is basically stock. It has rubber carpet, original bench seat, manual windows, and manual locks. I added a Sunpro mini tach, so I could tell the RPM of the engine. I mounted it to the side window defrost vent with a zip tie. I wanted to keep it low profile, and didn’t want to drill any holes. The defrost vent still functions as it should with the tach there, too. I added a Hurst shifter, which makes the truck a blast to drive. It clicks into each gear very positively, and the throws are only a couple of inches. The windows have 5% tint. It was installed last summer. The stereo in this truck is an Alpine CDA-9855. I bought this with the iPod integration kit. The iPod jack is located in the glove box, and charges your iPod. When connected, your iPod is controlled by the head unit. The amplifier is an Alpine MRD-M300 digital 300w class D mono amp. It powers a single Infinity 10” reference series dual voice coil sub. The door speakers are factory, as far as I know. The head unit has an equalizer in it which allows you to take all of the bass out of the door speakers and let the subwoofer handle all of it. What that gives you is very clear sound without distortion, even at high volume levels. Engine: I left the engine totally stock. I have done normal maintenance (oil changes, air filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, timing belt, coolant flush, water pump) and that is all. All oil changes since I’ve had the truck have been with Castrol High Mileage and K&N oil filters. I changed the plugs and wires when I got the truck. I changed the timing belt at 100,000 miles; at the same time, I did a coolant flush and changed the water pump. The truck didn’t come from the factory with power steering or A/C. It still doesn’t have power steering, and I don’t feel such a small truck even needs it (it would lower the gas mileage, too). It does have A/C, though. It had it when I got it. After doing some research, I did find that the A/C system is a dealer-installed unit. It utilizes a Sanden compressor, and looks factory. It uses the factory controls, too. A/C works perfectly. The engine is a fuel-injected 2.3L SOHC 4 cylinder. It has 2 spark plugs per cylinder – yes, this 4 cylinder engine has 8 spark plugs (think factory MSD). Body: The body of the truck is in very nice shape. Truck has never been wrecked. It is also the original paint job. There are a few minor door dings and dents around the truck, but for being 15 years old, I would say it’s better than average. The bed is scratched up inside, as it has been used as a truck. The clear corners up front and the l.e.d. tail lights were purchased from ebay. The clear corners have amber bulbs. The smoked red l.e.d. tail lights look awesome, and work perfectly. Drivability: Mechanically, this truck is sound. Brakes are good, no leaks, clutch feels strong. I usually average 24-26 mpg on a tank of gas. If I’m unloaded by myself on a highway trip, I can get 27-28 mpg. The truck has the numerically lower axle ratio, which means this truck cruises at 70 mph at 2400 rpm. The tires were all replaced late last year, and have less than 1000 miles on them. They are Bridgestone Potenzas. The previous tires were Kumho Ecsta ASTs, and had about 40,000 miles on them. I lowered the truck about 17,000 miles ago, and have had zero issues with it. Tires were rotated every oil change, and wore very evenly.
