Vehicle Detail
This auction is for a 1959 Mercury Montclair Cruiser 4 door hardtop. The Cruiser model was Mercury's hardtop line for the 1959 and '60 model years and was so designated on all hardtops which included 4 door, 2 door and station wagon models. In my opinion, the 4 door hardtops of the late 1950s were among the most beautiful designs offered by the auto industry at the time. The 4 door hardtops had a long, low, sleek appearance. Finding a 4 door hardtop from this era now is difficult in any condition. This example is in outstanding original condition with 43,550 original documented miles on it. 1959 Mercury's in general seem to be rare, perhaps because of the recession of 1958 which effected luxury car sales for the next year or so. This car has been garaged it's entire life and this is evident upon inspection, especially the very vulnerable interior and padded dash because these cars had such massive windshields. Most surviving cars have been redone or have sun damaged interiors because of the large windshield areas. This Mercury has all original upholstery, carpeting, unbelievable padded dash, mats, and perfect headliner. There is still some protective paper from the factory still intact on the piping around the doors and some plastic from the factory still left on both the front door scuff plates. The steering wheel retains it's original finish and is still supple without any worn paint, again supporting the fact that this car has been garage kept. Inside the trunk are the original mats and trunk lining, tools, spare tire and jack instructions. All tinted glass is excellent, original and without any wear or damage, including the windshield. All original gaskets are excellent and intact. There is no sign of any water damage on the large package tray behind the back seat. The car still has all 4 factory GE headlights, all in working order as well as working backup lights. Exterior is excellent. Paint is beautiful but does have a few (maybe 3) very small dings. One is on the trunk lid, one is on the hood near the Mercury logo, and one is near the passenger front door handle. None of these would show up in the pictures. There is some very minor pitting around the tail light housings which I believe are pot metal. Other than this, all chrome is beautiful. Underneath the car is very solid and clean and original. There is no rust anywhere on this car that I can detect. This Mercury has a 383 V8 engine with it's factory original 4 barrel carburetor. It has the optional multi drive transmission and power steering. The car starts easily and runs and drives beautifully. It is a pleasure to drive and goes down the road straight without any pull and brakes straight as well without any pull. All gauges work as they should including gas, temperature and speedometer. The engine compartment is original as well and has not been detailed. There is a yellow factory stamp for quality control on the inside of the front right fender near the battery. The battery is a correct reproduction as are the BF Goodrich tires for this car. For those of you interested in seeing the beauty and drama of a 1959 Mercury Montclair 4 door hardtop in motion, go to youtube and search for The Twilight Zone episode titled "The Hitchiker" to see one of these cars in action.
