THE CAR THAT STARTED IT ALL: 1971 DATSUN 240Z ~ 1970 PRODUCTION S30 SERIES I (1) ~ 5 SPEED ~ 907 RACING GREEN I could literally write a book about this car, but if I did, by the end I wouldn't list the auction, so I'll keep it simple, and welcome questions, or appointments to meet the Z and hear her run. I'd offer test drives, but salt is the enemy, and there's plenty of that out there right now. A CALIFORNIA CAR until April of 2007, and a summer PA car since. This Z is generally a well preserved survivor SERIES I car with a production date of 9/70. Modifications have been subtle and sensible. The car wears period correct Panasport wheels, has an SCCA approved roll bar, an am/fm radio from a 1973 model, a euro carb balance tube, and provides power through a later model ZX 5-Speed transmission. Other non-stock features include Leather seats from an Acura that fit well and feel great, and an after market steering wheel and shift knob. A set of SERIES 1 240Z seats, as well as an original steering wheel and shift knob are included with the car if the purchaser wants them. Also, the clock has been updated to a battery powered version that appears exactly as stock, but a non-modified clock is also included with the sale, as well as a new repair panel for the dogleg with the rust spot. Over $13K has been invested in this car in the last 4 years split just about 50/50 between my original purchase and the stack of receipts shown in the photos. Services within the last 5,000 miles include a new Interstate battery, alternator, tires (5), brakes, wheel bearings (all), u-joints (all 6), drive shaft rebuild, filters, fluids, plugs, points, cap, rotor, carb adjustment... healthy compression test. The car is currently insured through Hagerty for $12,000. I would trust this car to drive cross country tomorrow, not that this is the best season to put her on the road. We had the 240Z at Watkins Glen for the Vintage Grand Prix Celebration last year where Datsun was the featured Marque of the year. She didn't miss a beat on the trip up, the touring laps of the track, or the ride home. A joy, and a lifetime memory. ORIGINAL PAINT with 40 years of parking lot patina, and scratches, dings, and amazingly little rust. There is surface rust under the battery that has been neutralized, a spot on the right rear dog leg that can be seen in the pictures (email if you want a close up), and a few tiny spots otherwise, but nothing like most Z-Cars, and NO previous rust repair EVER. To the standard definition, the car is due for a paint job, but they're only original once, so that's a big decision for whoever comes next. THE DATSUN HAS A CLEAR PA TITLE IN MY NAME, WITH NO LIENS, verifying the mileage as correct... in my hand, and ready to be signed over to a new owner with no delay. THE SMALL STUFF: Payment in full must be made within 7 days of the close of the auction, following a non-refundable $500 deposit through PayPal that must be received within 24 hours of the auction ending. Payment methods accepted for the balance will be cash, a verifiable cashier's check from a bank with local branches in central PA, or a bank wire transfer directly to my credit union (preferred). If your plan is to come to Harrisburg to pick up the car, I can arrange to pick you up at the airport (MDT), bus, or train station. If you would be planning to ship the Datsun we can make our schedule fairly flexible to arrange to meet a transport service of your choice. The 240Z can stay here after payment in full has been received for up to a month to accommodate YOUR schedule - garaged, and of course - not driven. The mileage today shows 141,108, and hasn't changed since the end of fall, nor will it during the duration of the auction. PLEASE ASK any and all questions... your bid is a binding contract to purchase - not to consider. Thanks for looking, and take care. Rob. PS: The front license plate stays with me. ;~} On Feb-19-12 at 06:07:48 PST, seller added the following information: I just wanted to say thank you for all the interest, and answer some questions here for all to see. As you all likely know, essentially every part is still available for this car, and many have been replaced. Hatch vents, under hood light, door light switches, power antenna, pedal pads, battery hardware set, hood release cable, turn signal switch (very rare), differential mount, and many other little and not-so-little things have been replaced with new. Most questions have (understandably) been about RUST. I can't stress enough how solid this car is. She has 100 dings, a couple that cross the line to being small dents (the worst of which is at the top of the right rear wheel well), and 40 years of chips and scratches (both incidental and malicious), but the ONLY rust perforation I've found anywhere on the car is the spot on the right dogleg in front of the rear wheel. Other rust is limited to the neutralized superficial scaling under the battery and a few dime sized spots that haven't changed in years. The floors, frame rails, tire well, and hatch sill are SOLID. Even the logleg was evaluated and considered worthy of repair rather than replacement, but I had already bought the replacement panel, so it goes with the car whether you ever use it or not. The paint is thin, and certainly not the selling point for the car... other than the wonderful fact that the paint IS thin. Nothing can be worse in the course of a cosmetic restoration than dealing with layer upon layer of paint and previous body fill. There's none of that here to deal with here. The car could be driven for years as she sits, or would make for one of the least rust repair oriented body restorations in Datsun history. I've received 5 offers in the first 12 hours of the auction ranging from senseless ($5K) to legitimate (2 at $8K or better)... PLEASE don't miss this car for a few dollars. Bid until you hit the reserve, or use the Buy It Now option. The only solid early 240Z you regret is the one you you don't buy. I WILL ACCEPT CANADIAN BIDDERS on a case by case basis. Please email me if you're a northern neighbor and wish to be added to the approved bidder list. LASTLY - the reason for sale: KIDS... smallish people have motivated me to eventually seek out either an early 260Z 2+2 or a G35 coupe. No other reason at all ~ not a distress sale, and certainly not because I don't love the car, which truly I do. THANK YOU again, and any question at all, please don't hesitate to ask. Best Regards ~ Rob.
