The picture above was taken of another TR6 in 1974 for a Triumph brochure. All other photos were taken on December 11, 2011 to present a 38-year-old, wonderfully preserved Triumph TR6. Proudly displaying both original issue, California blue and yellow license plates, the car is presented for auction here on eBay only with NO RESERVE. Designed with assistance from the German studio of Wilhelm Karmann in Osnabrück, the TR6 was the penultimate effort in a long line of classic British sports cars made by Standard-Triumph. Its successor, the homely TR7/8, has never really achieved collectible status. Thus, the TR6 was the last of the hairy-chested, body-on-frame Roadsters, with a brawny straight-six up front, preferably to be driven with the top down. With the average car's lifespan being about a dozen years and its attrition rate often accelerated by careless, second-hand owners, it'd be a nice surprise to find an example of the species that, despite being 38 years old, still shines and sparkles like a late-model. The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of affluent, open-air enthusiasts. The wonderful 1973 TR6 presented here is a true survivor. It never suffered from neglect or corrosion and is original as one could ever hope for. Built in August of 1973, VIN *CF11270U* left the gates of Coventry England and made its journey to Sunny, Southern California. On November 11, 1973 the car was sold at British Motor Car Distributers in Anaheim, CA to an engineer living in the suburbs of Fullerton and has certainly led a charmed life ever since. A plethora of valuable documents provide a rich history with interesting material including previous CA registrations, work orders, the original Window Sticker, dealer tag and Owner's Handbook. All original documents go to the new owner. The British Leyland "Passport to Service" maintenance book still contains the original Customer Identification Plate stamped with the owners name and Fullerton address. Having never changed hands or left the Golden State, the car was driven sparingly as a sunny-day-only toy and pampered like a favorite child. On a fall day in 1989, the owner parked it in his garage... …where it remained, un-operated for over 2 decades. Today, the odometer reads only 68,936 and the original owner testifies this to be the actual, original mileage. Judging by the records and car's pure state of preservation, it must be true. Earlier this year, extensive work (labor and purchases totaling $10,439.97) was performed not for resale but to bring this vintage sports car back to its current state of original glory. Let's have a closer look now. Exterior: After nearly four decades, the pristine, rust-free body and undercarriage speak volumes about the loving care this TR has always received and underscores its Southern California provenance. Purely for cosmetic purposes, the outside only was professionally refinished to nicely match its original Mimosa Yellow (color code #64). The photos below show the car just prior to being prepped for refinish. As you can see; the bumpers, seals and trim pieces (even the windshield & frame) were carefully removed to insure an even, factory-clean finish. Amazingly, the car was still wearing nearly 100% of its factory applied paint. Only suffering from a few cosmetic issues; there were a couple small dings and the paint had worn through to the original primer on several panels. Most importantly, body gaps between hoods, doors, and fenders are of reference quality and there was absolutely NO evidence of rust, major collision repair or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights. Below is a photo of the car just after returning from the paint shop and ready for reassembly. To ensure a factory-correct fit & sparkling finish, nearly all of the rubber seals and brightwork were re-chromed, replaced or refinished. Surveying the car's straight and smooth coachwork today, we marvel at how well this car presents. In fact, with little preparation, this fine example of the marquee could be proudly displayed a local car show or Concourse d'Elegance. A brand-new, Robbins convertible top was fitted. It fits tight as a drum with no leaks or wind noises and the rear window has a nice zip-out feature allowing fresh air (or a surf board) to come through. These vintage, MICHELIN 185-15 redline tires are date stamped with a three-digit code which denotes the tires were manufactured in the 1980's. In the photo below, the last three numbers 112 indicates the tires were manufactured on the 11th month of the 2nd year. In this case, it means November 1982. And this receipt from Phillips Tire clearly verifies they were purchase over 28 years ago and have covered the last 44k miles. To make things even more interesting, the spare tire is the original 1973 Goodyear Redline (see "Made in Great Britain"). Amazingly, it appears this tire has never been used! Although these tires will all need replacement for the next long trip, they are genuine artifacts and any true collector will appreciate their wonderfully preserved state. Riding on refinished, 6J x 15" factory steel rims with chromed lug nuts, center caps and aluminum beauty rings, wheel detail is amazing. Speaking of detail, let us stress how straight the body is, how sparkling the chrome, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 3-year old, not a 38-year old car. This one is that clean! Let’s have a peak under the hood. Engine & Mechanical: The car's engine compartment is all original, factory-correct, down to the decals and markings. Originality abounds. This is a numbers matching Triumph, featuring its factory-installed engine and drivetrain. Surprisingly perhaps, the wiring looks fantastic, the car always runs cool, and there are no oil leaks worth mentioning. To properly bring the car Back to Life, thousands of dollars were invested into the engine, its ancillaries, suspension, fuel and braking systems. The 2.5-liter, six cylinder power plant inhales through freshly rebuilt dual Stromberg carburetors. It sounds crisp and runs smoothly, like a turbine, with superb oil pressure, cold or hot. The extensive mechanical work (listed at the top) ensures that any worn items or issues related to the 22-year, storage period were painstakingly attended to. As a result, this TR6 is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Yes, any TR6 can be a very tough and reliable automobile with a bit of preventative maintenance! We'll inspect the interior next, shall we? To make things perfect, a brand new interior was installed in factory correct black upholstery (trim code 11) made to exact Triumph Heritage standards. The reclining bucket seats with small head rests were completely rebuilt with new foam, diaphragms and hardware. The inserts display a unique, diamond-pattern. Brand new cut pile carpet and door pads complete this interior. Not an inexpensive job, as it was very high quality work. The TR6's luxuriously outfitted cockpit is a world apart from the austerity of a TR3 or early TR4, keeping more in line with a Jaguar E-Type or Jensen. A true British Roadster must have a wooden dashboard, and the TR6 is no exception. A full array of SMITHS gauges all work flawlessly. A warm patina complements the wood facia and silk screened, instrument dials. All the switches and lights work; even in the glove box. The original, push-button, AM/FM radio has 2 speakers and guarantees pleasurable audio, even when traveling topless at speeds well above the double nickel; especially when tuned to 70’s classic-rock stations! Both sun visors are new with crystal clear passenger mirror. Let’s have a peek inside the boot. The carpeted trunk is surprisingly large and very clean. (Of course the light works) The lug wrench with original jacking equipment and long handle are displayed. The above items as well as the matching wheel with original, Michelin Redline spare tire reside in a separate compartment below a carpeted wooden partition. A typical TR6 weak spot would be the trunk floor. Out of sight and deeply recessed, it is usually the first place where corrosion develops. Things are different here! Not the tiniest rust bubble is to be found; the paint inside is still 100% factory original. A picture says more than a thousand words: this--all original--trunk is clean! Drivability: Invigorating is the word that best describes this TR6 experience. The Roadster runs like a cheetah on the prowl. Its suspension layout is intelligently engineered and the power-to-weight ratio is very favorable, indeed. In any climate, the powerful 6-cylinder engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly through the gears without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror. Warmed up, the oil pressure ranges from about 30 lbs. at idle to a reassuring 75 lbs. at speed. Coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs at high speeds. Throwing this TR through the curves, the strong engine emanates throaty, lusty sounds. The fully synchronized 4-speed transmission shifts smooth and precise. The fresh disc brakes anchor the car securely, in a straight line, and without any hint of fading. Handling and braking are simple and superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. All in all, this Triumph is a thoroughly convincing performer and a joy to drive! Everything works on this TR, from the lights and switches to the heater fan and back-up lights. With new tires, the car can be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live. We will be happy to drive the car to our local tire dealer and extend our wholesale cost for tire replacement at the request of the winning bidder. For example: our cost for 4 new Yokahamas is $297 installed. Please email us for more info. Pound for pound, Triumph's TR6 is one of the finest, most fun post-war British sports cars. Being the last of the breed, a TR6 is a highly collectible Classic with fantastic appreciation potential, one that can easily serve as a reliable daily driver. To make things even better, the car gets 25 MPG on regular gas and is smog exempt in California as well as most other states. Reasonably priced spares as well as extremely affordable classic car insurance are readily available. Looking back, you realize that, somewhere in time, the chapter of the true British Roadster has ended. It has ended with the introduction of engine management systems; it has ended with the worldwide popularity of power steering, power windows, power tops, and power-assisted thinking, even in Her Majesty's Kingdom. It has ended with the Triumph. This Triumph TR6 however is up to any task imaginable. It could serve as a show car, a "new" old car to relive the good old days, or simply as a reliable, fun daily driver during ANY time of the year. At the very least, no matter where you go, you’ll see a smile on everyone’s face, including your own. To state it succinctly: It delivers on its promise! There's but one stumbling block on the way to TR6 heaven: Original, rust free, unmolested, well documented, low-mileage examples are getting very hard to find.
