If you allow time for all 79 detailed photographs to load, you’ll feel as though you were transported back in time to the 1970’s, viewing a nearly new, Triumph TR6 on the showroom floor. Go ahead…scroll down and see for yourself… Owning this car will make you feel that way every time you see and drive it. Designed with assistance from the German studio of Wilhelm Karmann in Osnabrück, the TR6 was the penultimate effort in a long line of classic British sports cars made by Standard-Triumph. Its successor, the homely TR7/8, has never really achieved collectible status. Thus, the TR6 was the last of the hairy-chested, body-on-frame Roadsters, with a brawny straight-six up front, preferably to be driven with the top down. With the average car's lifespan being about a dozen years and the attrition rate of lower-priced models--such as the Triumph TR6--often accelerated by careless, second-hand owners, it'd be a nice surprise to find an example of the species that, despite being 37 years old, still shines and sparkles like a late-model. The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of open-air enthusiasts. The wonderful 1974 TR6 presented here is a true survivor. It never suffered from neglect and is original as one could ever hope for. Built in March of 1974, VIN *CF19457U* was sold new in sunny, Southern California. Having never left the Golden State, it has certainly led a charmed life. The original, Owner's Handbook, the British Leyland "Passport to Service" and TR6 Work Manual are included. Serviced at Britalia Import Car Service in Fullerton CA is not only a testimony to the substantial and meticulous maintenance work performed, but also how reliable this fine automobile has been and will continue to be for many years to come. Let's have a closer look now. Exterior: After more than three decades on the road, the immaculate body, undercarriage and trim speaks volumes about the loving care this TR has always received and underscores the car's Southern California provenance. Recently, the outside was professionally refinished to a very nice, driver quality that matches its original Maple Brown (color code #73). Bumpers and lots of the trim were painstakingly removed during the prep work to insure an even, factory-clean finish. Every diamond has its flaws: There is rust in the sheet metal just behind the lower wheel wells. (see photo below) But the frame and floors are solid. This appears to be the only area where rust is visible. These flaws are cosmetic and can certainly be expected on most 37 year old cars. Most importantly, body gaps between hoods, doors, and fenders are of reference quality and there is absolutely NO evidence of major corrosion, collision repair or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights. Surveying the car's straight and smooth coachwork today, we marvel at how well the finish was preserved over the years. In fact, with little preparation, this fine example of the marquee could be proudly displayed a local car show or Concourse d'Elegance. Engine & Mechanical: The car's engine compartment is all original, factory-correct, down to the decals and markings. Originality abounds. This is a numbers matching Triumph, featuring its factory-installed engine and all the original ancillaries. Surprisingly perhaps, the wiring looks fantastic, the car always runs cool, and there are no oil leaks worth mentioning. Beyond routine tune-ups & oil changes, thousands of dollars were invested into preventative maintenance, mainly to the engine, its ancillaries, suspension and braking systems: Hoses, belts and switches have been replaced, brake master, front & rear bushings, upper ball joints and clutch have been changed, carburetor was tuned, plugs renewed, battery replaced. No wear item has been left unattended; as a result, this TR6 is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. The 2.5-liter, six cylinder power plant inhales through dual Stromberg carburetors. A slight bearing rattle can be heard at cold start. Otherwise, the engine sounds crisp and runs smoothly, like a turbine, with superb oil pressure, cold or hot. Yes, any TR6 can be a very tough and reliable automobile with a bit of preventative maintenance! Newer radial tires handle great and factory correct wheel detail is amazing. Speaking of detail, let us stress how straight the body is, how shiny the bumpers, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 7-year old, not a 37-year old car. This one is that clean! The convertible top fits tight as a drum and there are no leaks or wind noises! Its tan color nicely complements the cars color scheme and the rear window has a nice zip-out feature allowing fresh air (or a surf board) to come through. Pull the two chromed levers above the windshield; unsnap the back and the top folds down in seconds. With the top folded down the included boot cover snaps on easily for wind in your hair enjoyment. Remember, this is an old-school British roadster: the top is only to be closed in an absolute emergency, i.e., in a hurricane or when fully submerged. We'll inspect the interior next, shall we? The original Tan upholstery is as clean as can be. The original bucket seats with small head rests display unique, diamond-pattern center sections. The original upholstery has a few tears but otherwise still looks great… …as do the door panels, cut pile carpeting, dash and full instrumentation. The TR6's luxuriously outfitted cockpit is a world apart from the austerity of a TR3 or early TR4, keeping more in line with a Jaguar E-Type or Jensen. A true British Roadster must have a wooden dashboard, and the TR6 is no exception. This one is brand new. A full array of SMITHS gauges all work flawlessly with perfect silk screening of the instrument dials. The black dash top is also new and looks great. The carpeted trunk is surprisingly large and very clean. Matching wheel with original, Michelin Redline spare tire resides in a separate compartment below a carpeted wooden partition. Original jack with lug wrench is shown on the right. A typical TR6 weak spot would be the trunk floor. Out of sight and deeply recessed, it is usually the first place where corrosion develops. Things are different here! Not the tiniest rust bubble is to be found; the paint inside is still 100% factory original. A picture says more than a thousand words: this--all original--trunk is clean! In short, everything looks and operates as if the car was delivered yesterday, not 37 years ago. Drivability: Invigorating is the word that best describes this TR6 experience. The Roadster runs like a cheetah on the prowl. Its suspension layout is intelligently engineered and the power-to-weight ratio is very favorable, indeed. In any climate, the powerful 6-cylinder engine starts every time; idles, revs and pulls effortlessly through the gears with no hesitation. The car accelerates strong and smooth leaving no big puddles in your driveway or smoke in your rear-view mirror. Warmed up, the oil pressure ranges from about 20 lbs. at idle to a reassuring 60+ lbs. at speed. Coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs at high speeds. Throwing this TR through the curves, the strong engine emanates throaty, lusty sounds. The rebuilt, fully synchronized 4-speed transmission with new clutch shifts very smooth and precise. The disc brakes anchor the car securely, in a straight line, and without any hint of fading. Aided by radial tires, handling and braking are simple and superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. All in all, this Triumph is a thoroughly convincing performer and a joy to drive! In fact, this TR’s steering makes a mockery of the rubberized, over-assisted control mechanisms that pass for most modern cars' guidance systems. It's smooth, discreet, and very precise and controllable. Gung-ho throttle steer is available if you're in the mood, well-mannered road-holding if you're not. The TR’s chassis inspires with its unsophisticated charm; its transparency is convincing. Everything works on this TR, from lights and switches to heater fan and back-up lights. Despite its age, the car definitely is ready to be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live. Pound for pound, Triumph's TR6 is one of the finest, most fun post-war British sports cars. Being the last of the breed, this is a highly collectible Classic with fantastic appreciation potential, one that can easily serve as a reliable daily driver. To make things even better, the car gets 25 MPG on regular gas and is smog exempt in California. Reasonably priced spares as well as extremely affordable classic car insurance are readily available. Looking back, you realize that, somewhere in time, the chapter of the true British Roadster has ended. It has ended with the introduction of engine management systems; it has ended with the worldwide popularity of power steering, power windows, power tops, and power-assisted thinking, even in Her Majesty's Kingdom. It has ended with the Triumph. This Triumph TR6 however is up to any task imaginable. It could serve as a show car, a "new" old car to relive the good old days, or simply as a reliable, fun daily driver during ANY time of the year. At the very least, no matter where you go, you’ll see a smile on everyone’s face, including your own. To state it succinctly: It delivers on its promise! There's but there is one stumbling block on the way to TR6 heaven: unmolested, well documented, dry climate, low-mileage examples are getting very hard to find.
