Vehicle Detail
0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false This 1971 Datsun 1200 Fastback is a solid, drivable example in good running order. It has been upgraded with a 1400cc motor and dogleg 5-speed transmission out of a later Datsun/Nissan (original 1200s were equipped with 1171cc engines and a 4-speed gearbox). It is a spirited car to drive and goes quite well with the running gear improvements and its inherently well-balanced rear-wheel-drive platform. The car is generally straight and structurally it is very solid with no serious rust. The paint could stand improvement as it is dull and faded through to primer in some areas. Importantly, the car is still orange (its original color). There is severe paint fade on the roof and trunk lid as the photos show. It is unknown when the engine and transmission upgrades were made. The wheels are not original but give the car a good period aftermarket look. The trim is generally straight and in good condition, best of all the grille is incredibly straight - where so many of these cars fell victim to years of street parking and accumulated dents and dings. The underbody is in good shape with solid rocker panels showing only minor surface rust; the floor pans are in good condition as well (see photos). The engine bay is tidy. The interior is fitted with aftermarket seats and is serviceable as is. There are no cracks on the dash, however the interior could stand cleaning and/or replacement of seats and carpets to be more correct. We have driven the car and can report that it performs well on the road. Steering is light and agile, and there are no unhealthy engine or suspension noises at speed. Clutch takeup is easy and all gear synchros work. The brake pedal has good pressure and a solid bite. Overall, this is a running, driving 1200 Fastback that is not rusty - therefore it is miles ahead of many of the other 1200s that come up for sale. While this car needs work to be show-worthy, it will serve as a very capable vintage car for rallies and tours while you tend to the cosmetics. Please contact 415-990-9992 with any questions.
