Vehicle Detail

I am a British car mechanic and have resurrected this right hand drive 1954 MG TF after it languished in a garage for almost 2 decades. This is the quintessential “driver” with great patina, still looks great from 5 feet away but not too perfect to enjoy.I have overhauled the fuel system, tank removed, checked and cleaned with 2 in line fuel filters added for extra protection. New SU fuel pump and fuel hoses. The hydraulics have been flushed and repaired as necessary with new hoses added. The engine received a full ignition tune-up and a complete carb dismantle overhaul. The car starts up instantly and has a very smooth idle with excellent oil pressure. All the lights, electrics and gauges work except as noted below. Coolant has been flushed and hoses replaced as needed. When I received the car it had virtually NEW chrome wire wheels and new splined hubs. However due to the extended storage the chrome did not hold up too well and began to rust. I media blasted the wheels and painted them the correct wire wheel silver and they look great. It has newer Vredestein tires in the correct 165/15 size. The front lever shocks have been replaced with rebuilt units and the suspension and steering are very tight and responsive as they should be. Despite being a front drum brake car, the brakes work very well and you would not know it did not have front discs. The brand new brake drums and shoes are likely the reason for this. As a driver it is an excellent car, very strong, honest and reliable as I have put many miles on it since last year when all this work had been completed. As far as the cosmetics it has very old paint, which has its many share of nicks, scratches and blemishes. It does however look very consistent but is not as nice as the photographs would lead you to believe. When I purchased the car it had paste wax remnants everywhere – white residue in all the crevices. I stripped the body down to the basic tub and cleaned things thoroughly before re-assembling it with new fender beading, rubber trim, and lamp plinths.Much of the chrome trim I have either replaced with new, replaced with better used or simply been able to polish what was there and maintain a nice consistent look. Most of the rubber trim has been replaced with new (the light plinths, body seals, running board rubbers and fender beading) The chrome grille is in very nice shape and the bumpers and over riders are very nice as well, though the underside of the bumpers have some rust from its long storage. Overall the look of the car is very presentable and one that can be enjoyed without embarrassment.Windshield frame chrome is in very good shape and the glass is intact, complete with the 1980 PA inspection sticker! The interior is very consistent with the exterior having been redone back in the late ‘70’s. There is the typical AMCO door panels and replacement vinyl seat kit. The carpets are intact and showing wear but presentable. There is a brand new rear top boot cover (1/2 tonneau). There is a top included, though I have never used it. It is in OK shape, no tears but the rear window is somewhat cloudy. The negatives and needs are;-No side curtains or side curtain storage bin behind the seats-Speedometer jumps.-The temp gauge does not work nor does the clock. -Horn does not work -The wood structure below the left door is a bit questionable.-While it sounds great, the muffler has a hole in it.-The center dash panel needs to be re-finished, the paint is peeling off. This is an excellent driver, sorted mechanically and ready to enjoy as is. I have The Heritage certificate for it and most receipts for the parts I have replaced.
