Vehicle Detail

This is a 1984 4x2 diesel pickup. This little long bed runs and runs, gets great mileage, and actually hauls bigger loads than a lot of your bigger trucks (mainly because it is so easy to load this truck as it is relatively close to the ground). The actual rated capacity in the long bed is bigger than the short bed, and runs about 1650 pounds (versus 1150 for the short beds). This truck starts right up every time, even on Northern California winter mornings when you have to brake the ice scarper out for the windows. The truck is a worker, not a looker. There are dents and scratches on all the panels and the bed. The vehicle has a salvage title - the damage was to the passenger fender and the hood, grill and radiator. These parts have all been replaced. One could go crazy and fix all the dents and scratches, swap for better doors, and repaint the entire truck again, and I thought about it... but as it is now, it is a passable looking work truck.(The previous owner had his business info on the side of the truck -this comes right off with rubbing compound, but I kept it on since I liked the worn chipmunk on the passenger door and like the patina of the logo.) The injection pump was replaced by the previous owner at around 120k and the timing belt was done at that time as well. The truck has almost 200k on it, so it might be time to look into the timing belt again. The gauges all work. The truck always runs cold, except when you push it for a while up a hill, then the temp starts to climb to the first third of the range. The brake light goes on when you pull the handbrake, and then sometimes doesnt let up unless you jiggle the handbrake just right as you retract it. The truck rides well and does not pull when you take your hands off the wheel. It will easily do a trip of a couple hundred miles. The tires are nothing to write home about, but the truck comes with two just about new spares. The shocks seem fine. The truck actually seems to ride better when it has about 500 pounds in the back. The truck has a five speed manual transmission and power steering. The front seat vinyl is trashed under the seat cover. The headliner has some tape residue on it and small holes from a safety pin from the previous owner not realizing you could keep the sun visors up by tightening the screw on the visor arm -he used the pins into the headliner instead. The radio and antenna work, but have not been re-installed. An extra radio and the loose antenna come with the truck. This is a great around town truck, but I have personally driven it, in the last couple of months, for trips of 6 and 8 hours. It will get up to around 75 on the freeway -it just wont get there quickly. For some reason people smile at you when you drive this truck, and it just feels great to have it loaded down and know that you are getting triple the mileage of those guys with the big 4x4 domestic rigs, and you might still hauling the same amount or more. Note that the miles on the truck might change slightly as it is still being driven. For people with questions about rust: I have to say that being a California truck this vehicle has very little rust. Just some surface rust on the edge of the tailgate and surface rust on the sub frame under the bed, both of which I have tried to show. Additionally, there is rust on the bottom of both bumpers, which are not very well painted. For people with questions about the salvage title -certainly you should beware of it. However, I can personally say that this truck was in a pretty minor accident with no frame damage that I could see. I've included shots of the front cross member area where one would expect to see frame dame if there was any. I have two more points to make about the salvage title: 1) it dates from 2007 when gas was cheap and these trucks were not appreciated for what they were and thus had a pretty low blue book and salvage value. 2) For what this is worth to potential buyers, when I was shopping for this truck I chose it over another, non salvage truck, with about 120k on it at about the same price. That truck was rickety, beat, had lots of problems, and no power... this truck is not the prettiest, but it is very solid (and had more power than the other even before I had the exhaust fixed).
