Vehicle Detail
You are about to bid on a 1980 Classic Mercedes Benz 240D. Look on line. This car is better than any I've seen selling across the country, even than the videos on YouTube, for Thousands more than I have listed here today. This classic is an originally owned (1 owner) and operated Southern California vehicle. The title is from California. It was my Mother's and was used as a family vehicle in LA & Orange County (CA) for almost 10 years until retirement. I drove this classic in High School when Mom let me. It has been cared for and protected inside the garage since first purchased. Today, I personally use this 240D as a commuter car for work the past few years. I have been driving to and from work here in Las Vegas. I park in my garage at home and in a car-port at work. No Vegas sun hitting this classic. The exterior is in great shape, minimal dings to the armor. I get compliments EVERY DAY, everywhere I go. The original paint was buffed out to a great shine. No rust any where. There are few paint jobs to compete with an original Mercedes. The car is very clean. The left passenger door has slight damage at the bottom you can see in my photos. The right passenger door has a scrape that is detectable at the right angle. All bumper rubber is intact and near perfect except for the rear left bumper where a small piece has chipped off. Door seals are good and I changed the driver's door seal. INCLUDED & mounted is a original Benz right side door rear-view mirror. Not included on this years base model. That right mirror is a tough find for this classic car and can sell on it's own for more than $100, even on ebay. The antenna is in good shape too. All dash board indicators function flawlessly. Head & Fog lights switch on and off properly and work great. Blinkers and running lights are all functioning and each were replaced at various times in the last 12 months. The dash looks perfect but for one 1/2" crack that is hard to see. The glove box light works great and the latch works awesome, opens and closes and locks. Front & Back dome and door lights work great. The interior seats are near perfect, the drivers seat has a 'spider' looking worn area that has not gone through. The leather is in the best shape and has been covered by original sheep's wool seat covers since purchased. All seat-sliding levers function great. I recently pulled the seat out and greased all moving parts. The carpets are intact and preserved very well. Original Benz floor mats included. Original BECKER push button radio works great and picks up local radio stations. The original rear window First-Aid box is in-tact and very clean. Original keys(2), including valet key (1) and several copies. All original MBZ Manuals included with the plastic case they came in. Also included is a brand new, unopened Haynes Automotive Repair Manual for the Benz 240D 123 models. The door locking mechanism functions as it was designed except when the outside temp goes up to 90. A Question presented asked "what does this mean?" So here we go: Let me Clarify, The Pneumatic Auto Locks manufactured on the the MBZ's during those years works great, except when the ambient temperature gets to the 90 degree mark. At this point the doors need to be manually locked and unlocked. No big deal really. Even in extreme temps the air-locks work intermittently. As you should know this is a small diesel engine that performs like a champion work horse and is used to this day around the world. The 1980 240D model has been on the most reliable “World Top Twenty” vehicles of all time in areas of dependability and durability. The 240D has been known to go in excess of 600,000 miles and more. I have seen 'blogs' stating they have hit the 900,000 mile mark. With only 156,200 miles this Benz can last another 500,000 miles easily. (http://jalopnik.com/5590283/whats-the-most-reliable-car-built-since-1980) Recently I saw a 1980 240D out of Oklahoma City that sold for over $13,000. It was completely restored to showroom perfection. The vehicle cruises at 65-75 mph on the highway and as you know; turtles and keeps on rolling on the side streets and hills while all getting about 25-30 mpg. They are also easily converted to run on vegetable oil for those who may wish to convert. The ride is GREAT, taking bumps on the road like they are not there. I am also including BRAND-NEW REAR SHOCKS I had purchased for my other 240D. The auto-transmission and lever function smooth and needs the plastic washers to tighten up stick-shift . There is a cruise control on the car but I am unable to get it to work. The steering has a slight lax & pull to the right when braking but remains true. The brand new Goodyear white wall tires add the classic highlight to this Benz style. **(6/13/2011) I had the Vacuum Shut off Valve and gaskets replaced because the Benz started puttering as it was turning off. A $312.23 JOB. The car starts and shuts off perfectly. Also, TODAY (6/18/2011) I replaced the Engine Motor & Transmission mounts. (a $339.00 job) The car runs so smooth it's like NEW. I personally replaced the oil & oil filter; air filter and both fuel filters. Brakes function well and lines have been drained and replaced with DOT 4 brake fluid. They sometimes squeak from the brake & Vegas dust but that stops squeaking after cleaning. There is a very very slow-drip oil leak that shows up from time to time. The heater produces a lot of heat and all the fans work great. The AC gets very cold. The A/C does pull power from the engine. All vents and air controls work like they did the first day off the assembly line. This is a once in a Lifetime & Rare opportunity to own a low miles, AWESOME condition classic like the 1980 Mercedes Benz 240D. I love this car. I am not a salesman, I just want to find a great home for this classic car. With the new improvements to the car it is a steal for any commuter, Benz enthusiast or a collector. DO NOT PASS THIS UP.
