Vehicle Detail
1978 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce – AR115410004099 Relisted - For your consideration is my beautiful 1978 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce – one of the nicest original S2 Spiders left in the country, if not the world. This car is not restored in any way, shape, or form, but is an excellent driver and gets “thumbs-up” everywhere we go. I hate to let it go, but with two small kids and a house full of projects... Well, you know the story. This car was owned for the majority of its life (1978-2009) by a single individual who kept the car garaged in the dry Colorado climate. Because of that, it is rust free yet not subject to the sun damage so often associated with dry-climate cars. I have records going back to 1978 including the original bill of sale indicating a sale price of $10,557, regular annual Colorado inspection reports demonstrating a steady but slow progression of miles, and maintenance and repair records from throughout the car's life - although with just 19,941 miles there isn't that much! I brought the car to the East Coast about a year ago and spent some time and money bringing it back from a bit of a slumber. Among the work I did or had done: Replaced the original Spica fuel injection with new Weber carburetors (Spica system conveys if desired) Replaced the original distributor Replaced the exhaust manifold with a stainless steel header (original conveys) Flushed and sealed the original fuel tank Replaced assorted rubber bits: hoses, belts, etc. Replaced valve cover with polished cover (original conveys) Mechanically, the car is pretty well sorted, although the carbs are still breaking-in and could use balancing eventually. As it is, the car runs great, idles at a steady 750-800rpm, and drives very nicely. On the inside, this car is in excellent original condition, save for two minor dry-climate issues: 1) a couple of small cracks in the original dash pad; 2) some minor fading of the original carpeting. It is obvious that this car was cherished. The convertible top is in as-new condition, having been replace with a very high quality black canvas top. As you would expect, the plastic rear window is in perfect clear condition. The seats are in excellent as-new condition, showing essentially no wear. The car retains its original lap seat belts. The carpets and doorpanels are all in excellent original condition. apart from the aforementioned minor fading. All of the trunk carpeting is intact and in excellent condition, as are the convertible top boot, battery box, jack, and toolkit – with all tools present and accounted for. The radio, heater, fan, and all other electrics work as they should, and the car is current with the stringent Virginia safety inspection ( I could have avoided it by using antique plates, but I prefer the flexibility of a conventional registration). Outside, as previously mentioned, the car is in excellent original condition. After diligent inspection by myself and others, no rust has been located anywhere on the car. The Verde Ingles paint is in very good condition and has the shine you would expect from a low-mileage car of this nature, with the exception of some cracking of the paint on the car's nose which - try as I might - does not show in the photographs. The The original antenna is present and works perfectly with the original factory radio/cassette. The aluminum and chrome trim are all present and in very nice condition, and all of the lenses are in good, clear condition. I replaced the sealed-beam headlights with a set of Hella European lightsthat drastically improve the lighting, and I like the look better. The Turbina alloys are in excellent original condition, and wear Michelin MX4 185/70R14 tires. The rubber seals are all in good condition. The car even has the original Alfa dealer inventory label still affixed to the driver’s windshield. The motor starts easily and settles to a very smooth idle. The steering and suspension are factory-tight, and the 5-speed transmission shifts beautifully with no synchromesh crunch going in or out of any gear. There are no odd noises, whines, or shimmies from the driveline. The clutch takes-up properly and the car does not smoke. On the road, acceleration is spirited (if you want it to be) and the car tracks firmly and straight. The brakes are in good condition and do not pull. The brake pedal is appropriately firm. The car comes with keys, original owners manual, records, several spare parts, that came with the car. The car needs nothing immediately but a loving new owner. My loss in this case is most definitely your gain. Please keep in mind that this is not a new vehicle and that it is sold as-is, where-is with no warrantees implied, stated, or otherwise intended. You are bidding to own this vehicle, not to come and look at it after the auction has ended. I encourage bidders to come and see the car if possible.
