Vehicle Detail

Incredible 1965 Guilia Spider Normale. Barn find found in California after twenty years under a tarp. No rust, except right corner of trunk lid. Every system has been reworked to fully operating condition. Smooth transmission, no grind in 2nd gear (I have an '82 Spider and this baby runs through the gears even better). This car was trailered to Dearborn Heights, MI where additional work was done by Trail Auto, before being trailered again to Central Texas. All work since that time done by Joe Foster at Elite Import Autos. This car is a frequent participant in Alfa Romeo Owners Club events, and has completed numerous 300+ mile rallies without so much as a hiccup. Turns over smoothly, accelerates great. New brakes on all four corners, and four new Michelin ZXZ 165 SR 15's. New vinyl convertible top. New Interstate battery. You could go two ways with this car. Do some visual detailing and just enjoy her as is. This car turns heads and gets questions at every stoplight, gas station, and convenience store. The other path (my original intent) is a full frame off restoration to bring her back to Concours quality. It's all here... the instrumentation, the body works, etc. This car is truly a time machine. New parts installed in restoration to date: ignition switch, flywheel ring gear, water pump, 1600 block and head assemply, oil pump, intake valves, exhaust valves, piston rings, main bearings and t-washers, rod bearings, flywheel bolts, engine gasket set, cam followers, upper radiator hose, dip stick, cam cover, battery cable, spark plugs, exhaust hanger assembly, fuel pump, valve job, cam timing, ignition, repair wiring to lamps, fix fuel gauge, driveshaft flex disk, oil pressure flex line, brake hoses, replace fuel sender, replace rear brake cylinders. About the car. The 1965 Giulietta Spider its delicate and unfussy lines, its handling finesse, the sweet revving nature of the Satta designed 1290 cc engine all add up to an unbeatable package. The clean lines of the body were penned by Pinin Farina with design cues from Alfa Romeo’s first monocoque the Alfa Romeo 1900. The simple lines are extenuated by the hood which folds under the rear deck to completely disappear from view. The bright work is simple and understated by standards of the day, the deep Alfa Romeo Grill nestles between the eyebrows of the air intake, the contour of the badge running up to the bonnet are all nice touches. The interior was simple the seats are comfortable and surprisingly supportive with adjustment of the seat back by means of two small knurled bolts. The steering wheel is large but very tactile the deep baritone horn being operated by pressing the Alfa Romeo steering boss. Through the steering wheel the instruments are clearly visible and comprehensive with the speedo directly in front, the rev counter to the right and both temperature and fuel gauges to the left. The indicator switch is on the column but the switch-gear for all other control’s except the headlamp dip switch are in the centre of the dash. On the passenger side of the dash there is a cubby hole for oddments and the chrome trim that runs along the lower edge the dash forms a neat grab handle for the passenger. Ample power is provided by the 1290 cc engine which is the "normale" version, producing 80 bhp and its single carb twin choke carburettor feeding the mixture into the engine, which compressed it to 8.5 times its original volume before expelling it through a cast iron manifold. The Normale has a top speed of 165 kmh. In order to bring the car to halt Alfa Romeo gave the car disk brakes on the front with beautiful aluminium finned drums on the rear. Roadholding was very good in its day, the front suspension is double unequal length wishbones with an Anti roll bar, while the rear end has a live rear axle that is securely located by an A arm that connects to the top of the differential. Springing is by coil springs and the shock absorbers are hydraulic. The steering has a mere 2.8 turns lock to lock and is by worm and roller. To drive, the car feels light and nimble when cruising with the steering weighting up nicely when the car is pushed, driven today the car will have no trouble keeping with the traffic and will surprise many a modern car. Cruising in a Giulia is a pleasure the wrap round windscreen and small ¼ lights keep the wind off the driver the seating position is comfortable but the steering wheel is quite low and just touches a taller drivers leg. The only slightly clumsy control is the umbrella handbrake but this is only a minor irritation. Looking down the bonnet with the bulges of the wings either side you can just imagine hurtling up and down Alpine passes the engine eagerly revving all the way to the other side of 7000 rpm. What I would want to know:Car has fender damage from a low speed impact on the left rear quarter panel. All parts are present.Crease on the rear truck lid, corrosion on the lower right corner of rear trunk lid.Seats are from a late model MG. Replacements are available from several Alfa suppliers. The Giulia did not have headrests.Inappropriate mirrors were removed from both doors. Bits of red duct tape cover holes.Inappropriate antenna was installed. One in hole in right front quarter panel can be patched or capped.Slight damage to front passenger wheel well, could probably be repaired with a roller. Some scratches on rear deck behind passenger compartment, likely from in-artful raising or lowering of convertible top.Note 13,380 is displayed on the odometer.
