Vehicle Detail

1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Club Coupe This is a very special car.  Other than the recent repaint in the original Ermine White, this car is a true survivor.  38,000 pampered original miles.  Beautiful original interior.  No rust anywhere, at any time. It looks, runs and drives like a 2 year old used car.  It is nicely factory equipped with Powerglide automatic transmission, cushioned instrument panel, manual AM radio, Positraction rear axle, spare tire lock, heater, white side wall tires, and the Comfort and Convienience Package (backup lights, inside non-glare and outside rearview mirrors, 2 speed windshield wipers and washer, and glove compartment light)...plus all the standard Monza equipment. It was built late in the 1962 model year in GM’s Oakland, California plant and delivered new on August 30, 1962, at Sunset Chevrolet in The Dalles, Oregon. The repaint is about one year old.  There was no major body damage to repair, but there were enough minor scraps and shopping cart dings, that a repaint was necessary in order to bring the exterior finish up to the level of the rest of the car.  All trim was removed, the car was made laser straight, then painted with single stage.  The paint was then color sanded and buffed to a high gloss.  The door jambs and under side of the trunk lid were not repainted since they were in such good condition.  This is an expensive, no excuses, show quality repaint. The car was reassembled and any trim that was not perfect was replaced. The car has 1963 hub caps and headlight surrounds since I could not find extremely nice 1962 pieces.  They are identical to the 1962 ones except for the black inserts. The glass is all excellent.  The tires are new Firestones in the correct replacement size of 185 80 13.  Many more exterior pictures here... Exterior Pictures The interior is all original and in the rare one year only “gold” color (which is actually a pale yellow.  For some reason, Chevrolet chose to call this gold).  There are no rips or tears.  There is minor sun fading on the tops of the seats, a 1” section of seam on the top outer edge of each seat has been repaired, and there is a slight water mark on the driver’s door panel.  None of these minor flaws motivated me to replace the interior with new parts.  The padded dash is perfect but the original owner installed a period correct compass just above the ash tray. The original steering wheel is like new.  All gauges, switches, lights, radio, etc. work perfectly.  The car does not have  that “old car smell” so common with many 50 year old cars, and the heater is completely odorless when operating...somewhat rare for a Corvair. The seat belts are new replacements and I have installed rollers on the outside belts just as would have been done in the 60’s. The cardboard on the back of the fold down rear seat is original and in very good condition.  There are some minor marks on the headliner and visors.  Again, not even close to requiring replacement of the original parts. Many more interior pictures here... Interior Pictures The splatter paint in the trunk is original as are the Positraction and jack instruction labels and the label on the windshield washer fluid bottle.  The floor of the trunk is perfect...not even a hazing of rust.  More trunk pictures here... Trunk Pictures I have not detailed the under carriage.  I felt it would be a mistake to paint the factory original surface.  The car has never been undercoated.  The pan is dent and rust free.  The fuel tank was removed, cleaned and detailed.  The exhaust system is new.  The car does not drip ANY oil thanks to Viton push rod tube seals.  More under carriage shots here... Under Carriage Pictures The car runs like new.  The engine starts right up and purrs.  It burns no oil, doesn’t smoke at any time, and does not make any odd noises.  I have gone through the carburetors and distributor. I’ve replaced the plug wires and filters.  The battery is new.  The engine compartment is highly detailed.  More engine compartment pictures here... Engine Compartment Pictures The transmission goes immediately into gear and shifts like it should.  I have replaced the brake wheel and master cylinders and installed new flex lines.  The existing shoes and drums were like new so I did not replace them.  Wheel bearings were repacked.   The car drives and handles beautifully.  No play in the steering, no creaks and groans.  Peppy and responsive.  A real joy to cruise. Included with the car are the original owners manual, the original bill of sale, the original keys, a 1962 Corvair showroom brochure, and the original dealer license plate frames.   The car is registered with a Washington State Collector Vehicle license plate.  I am going to keep the 1962 dealer plate shown in the pictures. You are welcome to view the car in person, or to have a friend or professional appraiser look at it for you prior to the end of the auction.  I can provide additional pictures or details if you need them.  If you want to discuss the car over the phone, provide your phone number and a few times you can be reached in an email to me and I’ll give you a call.    The car is located in Bellingham, Washington 98225.   You may pick up the car in person, or I will help load the car on the carrier of your choice.  A $500 deposit is due 48 hours after auction close.  Payment must be made in full within 7 working days following auction close.  I prefer wire transfer but will accept cashiers check or personal check.  Funds must clear before title or vehicle will be released.  Vehicle must be removed within 4 weeks of auction close.    As with any vintage vehicle, no warranty is expressed or implied.
