Vehicle Detail
This is a very rare 1949 Packard two door Club 8 Sedan. There is only ONE of these registered on the Packard Forum for 1949! I barely saved this one from the salvage yard last winter in hopes of being able to restore it myself. But, as things often happen, I do not have the ability or funds to take on this restoration. Plus, I've been notified that my contract is not being renewed so I am without a job and cannot hire out those things I had planned on someone else doing that I knew were beyond my current state of knowledge. As Clint Eastwood said in one of his Dirty Harry movies, "A man's got to know his limitations". So, a little history as I understand it on this car. By the way, I have no documentation on the first part of this; this is the story that was explained to me when I bought it so take it for what it is worth but the man I got it from is well know in this area and honest. The car was bought and driven for years by a gentleman who finally became unable to drive and stored the car in a barn (there is one just about everywhere you look where I live). Time passes by and the gentleman passes away and it becomes time to settle his estate but the heirs cannot agree on the division on some things so they end up being sold in a court-ordered auction. That is where the guy I know comes in. He was an auction dealer for many years and many people still contact him if they find rare and unusual items. This was such a case. A buddy of his told him about this rare two-door Club Packard (one person told me they were rarer than convertibles) so he told the buddy to buy it for him without looking at it. He gets it and, knowing my interest in fine Packard automobiles, calls me. I take a look at it and we discuss prices and he has paid too much for it in the condition it is in and I can't afford to pay his price so he decides to sell it to a salvage yard after removing the "chrome" (he didn't know it was stainless). The yard was going to give him about $400 for it. I got on the Packard Forum and Packard Club and talked to some folks and decided to talk him out of it and traded a few things I had that he wanted for it and that is where I am today. My wife is still a little huffy about that deal! Now I am in the same position he was in. I don't have the money to restore it and really do not want to send it to the scrape yard so it is here on eBay with a starting price of close to half what it cost me. There are a lot of pictures (38 of them I think) at my website so you can get a good look at what I see as the issues with the car. If anyone needs more pictures please be specific about what you need and I'll try to get them for you. I cannot get to the undercarriage at this time to get you pictures; back issues and no one to help get it on a lift but when I had it on the trailer the frame looked solid under there. I've taken all of the stainless off the car now to prep it and get it ready. To can see the pieces in a couple of the pictures. The pictures are located at http://www.grhouse.org/id9.html Just to begin, there is rust through in both the front and rear floor pans and in the trunk. The holes are not terribly big but about soup can sized or a little larger. The upholstery is about totally gone and will all have to be replaced. The bumpers are in bad shape too. BUT, the good part is that the motor is free and everything seems to be there. Most of the body is in pretty decent shape. The rockers, of course, need some work and below the doors is bad and needs replaced. This would best be seen, as I did, as an extensive restoration. OR, if I dare mutter the words, a parts car or a rat rod. Personally, I don't like the idea of cutting a car up but that is better than scrapping it and that is where this one is headed if it doesn't sell. I'll take all of the good parts off and sell them on the Packard Forum site first and then here and the rest of the car will go to the yard if it doesn't sell. I saved it one time from the salvage yard but I've done all I can now. I've got no Reserve on it and a low starting price which is lower than I paid for it because I want to see it restored rather than junked. Well, it is all up to you folks now. I've got it on Craig's List here locally and it it sells I'll take it off the auction. Since this was stored for so long as an original and nothing was done to it the pictures alone are worth looking at. By the way, I do have a clear Indiana title for this car. In fact, I've got a copy of the title that originally shows it to be a 1950 model, which you can see from the VIN plate that it is not, and I've got the corrected title for 1949 issued to me. If you live within a couple of hundred miles of me I can deliver it to you for a fee. We'll have to work that out and it would have to be on a weekend. If you need to give me a call you can reach me at 765-628-2377. Thanks for looking, Gene
