Here's a little history: The 1979 MG Midget 1500 was among the final version to roll off Her Majesty's assembly line at Abingdon, England, over 30 years ago, concluding the final chapter in the life of the most economical and successful small-bore sports car ever built. Known as the Mk IV, the car is equipped with the 1493cc, four-cylinder, pushrod, OHV engine and fully synchronized, 4-speed transmission which greatly improved this Midget’s performance over the earlier versions from its 30 year production history. Amazingly, two full-sized adults can comfortably fit into the Mark IV Midget. What's more amazing is that the car can reach a top speed of nearly 100 MPH and gets over30 MPG! More about this MG... With the average car's lifespan being about a dozen years and the attrition rate of lower-priced models--such as the MG Midget--often accelerated by careless juvenile second-hand owners, it'd be a nice surprise to find an example of the species that, despite being over 30 years old, still shines and sparkles like a late-model. The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of open-air enthusiasts. Such an amazing find is the miraculously well-preserved car presented for auction here! Only having 2 documented owners, this Midget was only driven a few thousand miles each year and has led a charmed life. Originally owned by Hollywood screen actress Amy Madigan, during which time she starred alongside Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams. In 1994, she sold it to a local high school teacher who kept it garaged, meticulously maintained, (often by his own students) and never leaving the Golden state… A stack of maintenance and repair receipts are included that nicely document the car's mileage over the past 17 years. Exterior: After more than three decades on the road, the immaculate, rust-free body, undercarriage and trim speaks volumes about the loving care this Midget has always received and underscores the car's Southern California provenance. Origianlly Pagent Blue, the owner recently had the car re-painted to his favorite English sportscar color; British Racing Green. The driver quality finish has few chips, scratches and other blems but otherwise has a deep luster and now oozes Britishness! No bodywork was required and most importantly, all body panel gaps are factory true and there is absolutely no evidence of major collision repair or rust. With little preparation, this fine example of the marque could be proudly displayed a local car show or Concours d'Elegance. Michelin radials are mounted to Minilite Wheels which show amazing detail. Speaking of detail, let us stress how straight the body is, how glossy the paint: from 10 feet away, you'd think to be looking at a 2-year old, not a 32-year old car. This one is that clean! Interior: Most of the interior was reupholstered to better than factory standards including seats, carpets, door panels and dash cap. Note: The temp stayed cool while idling throughout this hour long photo shoot in 80 degree weather. Not a drop of coolant or oil fell from the engine. 65,299 Miles are actual as of June 4, 2011. Upgraded wood gearshift knob and Pioneer audio system nicely accent the center console. Note: Speakers are not currently installed. This simple interior can accommodate two 6’ adults in comfort and style indoors & outdoors! Steering wheel still has its original, deep grain which nicely validates the car’s extremely low miles. Finally, a brand-new convertible top was fitted. It fits tight as a drum and there are no leaks or wind noises! Also included is a removable hard top which is very practical during the winter months and when mounted at all points, improves stability. Please note: Hard top is only fastened in the front for display in these photos. The hard top also provides extra security if you leave your MG unattended and protects the interior when exposed to the elements for extended periods. Trunk contains all the important bits: Small tonneau, spare tire & wheel, jack and lug wrench. Note: The trunk light still works. A picture says more than a thousand words: this--all original--trunk is clean! In short, everything looks and operates as if the car was delivered yesterday, not 30 years ago. Engine & Mechanical: The car's engine compartment is all original, factory-correct. Most of meticulous maintenance was performed by Britalia in Fullerton CA. The Master mechanics at Britalia are legendary among British car clubs worldwide. Beyond routine tune-ups & oil changes, thousands of dollars were invested into preventative maintenance, mainly to the engine, its ancillaries, suspension and braking systems: Hoses, belts and switches have been replaced, brakes, brake lines, master and slave cylinders, bushings, motor mounts & slave cylinders have been changed, carburetor was tuned, plugs renewed, battery replaced. No wear item has been left unattended; as a result, this MG Midget is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Oh, and you won’t be slipping on any big puddles of oil below. Most importantly, this Midget has passed strict California emission standards, proving that the entire drive train is sound and all of the vital, 31-year-old smog components are still intact and working properly. A CA Smog Certificate will be provided for transfer of ownership in California. Drivability: Paramount to the MG Midget driving experience is the element of unadulterated fun. Lower the top and it's only you and your roadster, the aroma of Britishness, the sun, blue sky, green grass, and the rest of the World, which at this point fades to a level of insignificance... In any climate, the 4-cylinder engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror. The charmingly British engine delivers a raspy exhaust note. While not a torque monster by any means, it pulls in one glorious sprint from idle right up to the hydraulic tappets' pump-up point, just past 5000rpm. Warmed up, coolant temperature remains absolutely stable with no hint of overheating even after extended runs or when trapped in hot, summer traffic. Throwing this compact Midget through the twisties, aided by Michelin Radials tires; handling and braking are superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. With the peppy 4-cylinder engine, you'll find that bigger isn't always better as you’ll get 34 MPG on the highway. Although a little noisy, the fully synchronized manual transmission shifts smooth and precise in all gears. The front disk (rear drum) brakes anchor the car securely, in a straight line without any hint of fading. Both ignition keys and original key code tag are shown along with the most revent major tune-up receipt below. Note: Only the ignition keys are included. This Midget’s simple steering makes a mockery of the rubberized, over-assisted control mechanisms that pass for most modern cars' guidance systems. It's smooth, discreet, and very precise and controllable. Gung-ho throttle steer is available if you're in the mood, well-mannered road-holding if you're not. The Midget’s chassis inspires with its unsophisticated charm; its transparency is convincing. Looking back, you realize that, somewhere in time, the chapter of the true British Roadster has ended. It has ended with the introduction of engine management systems; it has ended with the worldwide popularity of power steering, power windows, power tops, and power-assisted thinking, even in Her Majesty's Kingdom. It has ended with the MG. This MG Midget, however, is up to any task imaginable. It could serve as a show car, a "new" old car to relive the good old days, or simply as a reliable, fun daily driver during ANY time of the year. At the very least, no matter where you go, you’ll see a smile on everyone’s face, including your own. To state it succinctly: It delivers on its promise! Presently, we have a clear, California Title. CA tax, license and registration expired December, 2010 but no penalties are due at this time as the DMV shows 'Non-Op status. A CA smog Certificate will be provided to complete Title transfer here in CA. Local sales tax and DMV transfer fees apply to residents in CA.
