Vehicle Detail

Normal 0 For auction here a rare and desirable 1931 Studebaker President Four Season Roadster (it does have roll up windows). One of Studebakers all time favorites it is a full CCCA classic (Classic Car Club of America). The President model 80 rides on a long 130” wheelbase and is powered by the original L-head straight eight engine with a displacement of 336 cubic inches. This car is not one of your garden variety Presidents but a little bit special. It was restored in the 1990s by my father who was one of the acknowledged experts in the early straight eight Presidents. The unique features included on the car include items what Studebaker referred to the “Speedway” option. This included the following special items: high 3/8” lift cam, high-speed rear end gear (3.47 to 1), special carburetor jetting and high compression cylinder head (7.0 to 1). It is painted in one of the two combinations available on the Speedway roadsters, Chessylite Gray and Cardinal Red. Studebaker sent an identically equipped car for testing at the Dry lake beds (Muroc) in Southern California in late summer 1931 and set 11 new stock car records one being 100 miles at an average speed of 90.35 mph. This car is also equipped with the rare optional stainless wheel spoke covers, attractive side mount covers and mirrors, salon horns, original trunk, the large stylized bird radiator mascot as well as an original Studebaker firewall mounted heater and a period aftermarket radio. It also has the rare optional right side taillight and directional signals added for safety (wired to the fender lights in front). It has gray leather upholstery in the passenger compartment to match the body color and red in the rumble seat to match the fenders and accent. In short just it has about every option/accessory that was available in 1931. Like all Presidents of this year it comes with a three-speed transmission and Free Wheeling. My father had built this car for not only show but also with the intent of touring the country in it. Unfortunately he passed away before he could satisfy that last ambition. It did however win a best of division in the only show it was ever entered. The engine, transmission and all mechanical components rebuilt with NOS parts. Maybe 500 miles since the total rebuild. The car spent its entire life in Southern California and never had even a speck of rust. For the past 14 years this car has been on display at the Studebaker National Museum in South Bend, Indiana where most of the images accompanying this description were taken. It should be noted that a few of the scenic photos taken right after completion shows the car without the side mount covers. The car does have the covers now. A nearly identical car sold at a live auction about eight years ago for $185,000! The reserve on this car is about one/half of that. I have not driven the car for many years and it has been museum stored as mentioned earlier. It may require some minor tweaking to get up to full speed but it ran well and strong when placed on display. I have tried to include all of the information I know about the car but I will be glad to answer any questions you may have. However, please read the above description thoroughly and look at the photos carefully prior to contacting me. This may obviate the need for unnecessary correspondence. Of course I can provide a phone number if you are seriously interested in purchasing the car. The car is now located in South Bend, Indiana. Winning bidder to pay $10,000 within 7 days. Balance due in 14 days.
