Please allow time for all 90 photos to load as exceptional automobiles such as this rarely come along… World-famous sports cars feature wild animals as their mascot: Ferrari displays the prancing stallion, Lamborghini has the raging bull. Jaguar Ltd. carries the name of the irresistible feline, and perhaps no other manufacturer's products are quite so aptly named. A Jaguar is velvety smooth, yet ferociously fast, while always maintaining an elegant composure. Created as successor to the legendary E-Type and the last model designed with input from the firm's founder, Sir William Lyons, the XJS is actually more than just a replacement. It is a Grand Tourer par excellence, the finest mode of transportation for two people wishing to travel fast and in style. Produced for over two decades, from 1977-1998, the XJS reached its pinnacle in 1990 with the first true convertible. No longer having an awkward “conversion top” from previous years, the new XJS came with a fully retractable power top, redesigned seats and steering wheel, burl walnut trim and diamond-spoke, alloy wheels. With the average car's lifespan being about a dozen years and the attrition rate often accelerated by careless second-hand owners, it'd be a nice surprise to find an example of the species that, despite being over 20 years old, still shines and sparkles like a late-model. The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of British car enthusiasts. Such an amazing find is the miraculously well-preserved car presented for auction here! Purchased new at Jaguar Land Rover of Monterey in Seaside, CA by a mature gentleman residing in Palos Verdes Estates, the dealer stamps in the Passport to Service show this cherished cat was serviced at Jaguar of South Bay (formally Whittlesey Jaguar) in Torrance, CA. From 1994 to 2000 the car enjoyed the dry climate of Phoenix, Arizona where its second owner kept it pampered and serviced at Beverly Hills of Scottsdale. For the past decade, it was owned by an engineer back in sunny, Southern CA and serviced by local Jaguar legend; Britalia in Fullerton. The work orders and dealer stamps not only speak volumes about the exemplary care this fine Roadster has received but nicely document its low mileage. Let’s have a closer look. Exterior: Original (very rare) British (Jaguar) Racing Green Paint (factory code HGR) with tan pinstripes that match the Barley tan interior and canvas top certainly is an appropriate color combination for the XJS. Aside from one professionally repaired area on the left side that was caused by a MINOR mishap in 1995, the car is still wearing its factory original paint which has kept its deep luster through all those years. If you work as an undercover agent for the FBI, this car is not for you as there are a few minimal CHIPS, SCUFF MARKS, DOOR DINGS AND BLEMISHES; most of which would require a magnifying glass to see but it has been garaged, regularly detailed and there is little to take away from its original beauty. Surveying the car's straight and smooth coachwork today, we marvel at how well the finish was preserved over the years. In fact, with little preparation, this fine example of the marque could be proudly displayed a local car show or Concours d'Elegance. 4 like-new, Dunlap GT Qualifier Radials of the size 235/60-15 are mounted to factory chromed Jaguar diamond spoke wheels; all have amazing detail. Speaking of detail, let us stress how straight the body is, how perfect the chrome, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 21-month old, not a 21-year old car. This one is that clean! Let's have a peek under the car's long bonnet now. Engine & Mechanical: The car's engine compartment is simply immaculate; right down to the engine, its ancillaries, decals and markings. The Jaguar XJS is a member in good standing of the most exclusive car club on Earth. Aside from Jaguar, this club has only four members, namely Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. You guessed it; we're talking about the Twelve Cylinder Club. If you never had the opportunity to drive a V12-powered automobile, you probably can’t conceive what you've been missing. A V-12 has 50% more cylinders than your dad's Oldsmobile or the Jones’ Mercedes S500. Accordingly wide is the power band, even more convincing the legendary, turbine-like smoothness of this incredible engine. The special High Compression May cylinder heads assist in producing around 262 hp to effortlessly cope with any traffic situation and improved fuel economy compared to V-12 engines from previous Jags. All factory recall and warranty work has been performed on this immaculate cat; every other needed item has always been promptly addressed, exceeding the dealer-prescribed maintenance schedule. Beyond routine tune-ups & oil changes, thousands of dollars were invested into preventative maintenance, mainly to the engine, its ancillaries, suspension and braking systems. Recent work included replacement of rear brakes, calipers and cylinders, a complete overhaul of the cooling system including new radiator, hoses & clamps, the A/C was serviced and a major tune-up was performed including new plugs, distributer cover, rotor, air cleaners, fluids replaced, etc, etc. Surprisingly perhaps, the wiring looks fantastic, the car always runs cool, and there are no oil leaks worth mentioning. With no wear item left unattended, this XJS is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Properly maintained, the bulletproof V-12 can be driven well over 250,000 without needing major work. Yes, any XJS can be a very tough and reliable automobile with a bit of preventative maintenance! We’ll inspect the interior next, shall we? Barley seats, door panels, and console are covered with the finest, delightfully patinated hides from deliriously happy, well-fed Scottish Highland bovines. These hides were most carefully selected, then vat-dyed in an antique wooden drum at the now-defunct, Edwardian CONNOLLY factory. Truly superior to the Detroit leather found in a pedestrian Lexus or Cadillac, the luxurious ambiance of a British high-end marque, such as Jaguar, Aston Martin, or Bentley is unmatched in the world. There is minimal wear and scuffing on the driver’s seat and door handles that is consistent with the patina of a two-decade-old interior but otherwise the leather is still very soft and supple. Speaking about the Jag's creature comforts, this car is well appointed with amenities such as power windows, mirror, door locks, telescoping steering column, and speed control. All lights, switches, and controls work as Sir William Lyons intended. The interior accoutrements of a Jaguar are legendary. A dashboard that deserves the name, with honest-to-goodness, burled walnut wood and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, here immaculately preserved; aside from a few miniscule surface cracks, the finish is pristine. All that old-world craftsmanship meets modern day technology, though: nestled between wood and leather. Upgraded Alpine sound system includes multiple speakers and CD player. Automatic climate control lets you select a convenient ambient temperature, and the system will supply ample amounts of ice cold or super-heated air. A space-age vehicle information center provides valuable data for the driver. Notice odometer reading of 54,285 actual miles. With the exception of a slow responding speedometer indicator, all gauges and warning lights work flawlessly. Behind the seats: a large luggage area. Wall-to-wall WILTON wool carpeting, as used by Rolls Royce, is an integral part of the car's veddy British charm. A separate, lockable storage box is located here to secure your valuables. Also included are ALL sets of keys, the original Jaguar Driver's Handbook and Jaguar Passport to Service with dealer stamps covering nearly half the car’s current miles. Recently, a brand-new convertible top and headliner was fitted. The tan canvas fits tight as a drum and nicely complements the car’s color scheme. The power feature works perfectly and folds up or down in seconds at the flip of a switch. Let's have a good look inside the trunk. Surprisingly spacious trunk will hold a large amount of luggage and the golf bags, too. It is completely carpeted so Madame's Louis Vuittons will remain without scuff marks. The jack and lug wrench reside in a matching bag in the left cubby hole. The battery--protected by a black cover--is located next to the spare. Dealer service mats and custom car cover are included in the immaculate trunk. Drivability: Three famous words best describe the XJS experience: Smooth, silent, sensuous… You turn the ignition key, and hear . . . nothing. You check the gauges right in front of you and they indicate that the engine is running. Can it be? Yes, indeed. It's a V-12, remember? Put the sleek gear selector into "Drive" and you immediately notice the incredible, silky smoothness of this power plant. The cat moves forward from idle without any indication of stress, the GM-designed turbo-hydramatic shifting imperceptibly. At any speed, in any gear, there is an abundance of power; you feel sovereign in any situation. Since you will probably never be driving the car at its 6400 rpm redline, you might be pleased to learn that the feline will continue to accelerate briskly and silently beyond any legal speed. Even at triple-digit velocity, you will barely notice the engine, nor any intrusive wind noise or buffeting. In any climate, the powerful engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror. Warmed up, coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs at high speeds. Power steering is precise and the automatic transmission shifts seamlessly. The disc brakes anchor the car securely, in a straight line, and without any hint of fading. Throwing this XJS through the curves aided by newer, Dunlap GT Qualifier Radials tires; handling and braking are superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. All in all, this Jaguar is a thoroughly convincing performer and a joy to drive! Driving a Vee Twelve-powered Jaguar can be an utterly rewarding experience, but acquiring a car that comes with deferred maintenance issues will lead to sleepless nights, perhaps even nightmares. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to seek out the best surviving example you can find, a dry climate car that was well serviced, such as this one. Plain and simple, the XJS Convertible was the most elegant luxury car of its generation. An incredible automobile with all the luxury, exclusivity, and performance imaginable, this low mileage Jaguar XJS represents a golden opportunity to join the Twelve Cylinder Club; driving it will make you feel like royalty. A bona fide collectible: now's the time to acquire this stunning automobile, the best example of the rare XJS you could ever hope to find. Despite its age and miles, the car is perfectly reliable and ready to be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live. Finally, the XJS has reached the bottom-end of the depreciation curve. A perfect time to buy. Being one of the last of the breed, this XJS has fantastic appreciation potential and can easily serve as a reliable daily driver. To state it succinctly: This XJS will deliver on its promise! There's but one stumbling block on the way to XJS Heaven: garaged, unmolested, well documented, low mile examples are getting very hard to find.
