Vehicle Detail

Up for NO RESERVE bidding is this 1970 Pontiac GTO that started it's life as a 400/350hp automatic. It is a real 24237 code hardtop that was originally delivered to Suburban Pontiac in Bellflower, CA. It was at one time owned by American race car driver Stu Hayner. Since the mid-eighties it has resided in Yorba Linda, CA. It is a local SoCal car. The only reason I mention this is because as you will see this is a very well built car that started from a solid rust free original and has been cared for from day one. I have ALL documention of the mechanical items that I mention with the exception of the front suspension as it was rebuilt completely about 8 or 9 years ago. I photo'ed it up close so you can see that it is like new with only 2-3000 miles. It drives like it should, straight down the road with no scares or issues. Turns corners wonderfully and handles perfectly (as a 40 year old car did). If I tell you about a part, there is a receipt or an invoice. I have taken pictures to get every angle and every side of this GTO photo'ed for this listing so you can see how clean it is. It has never been "fully restored" on a rotiserre, but the body has had new frame to body bushings installed front to rear and the underside of the car was completely cleaned a few years ago but has most of the factory underside paint still on it. As a true rust free SoCal car, cleaning it did not take much! Be prepared to get waved at and "thumbs up" from everyone while driving, and when getting gas or parking, be ready for conversations to start from people looking at it. You cannot go anywhere without being noticed in this car so if you're not into that, PLEASE DO NOT BID!!! The interior is original with the exception of the carpet and headliner which were replaced about 8-9 years ago. As most GTO owners will tell you, the Pontiac interiors were very durable, and this one is no exception to that rule. It is very clean with all seatbelts and optional shoulder straps. Now to the mechanics and the real reason we all love "muscle cars". Although this car started life with an excellent 400ci/350hp engine from Pontiac, it has been professionally upgraded to a real YZ code RAIII block, and #12 RAIII heads. It was rebuilt by noted engine builder Jay Steel from Taylor Engines (Whittier, CA next to BDS Superchargers) in early 2002 as a factory 400 RAIII with all factory parts. He balanced everything to the gram, cc'ed and polished the heads etc, and did his usual quality build-up. Although it made 411 lbs/ft of torque and 351hp, it needed more so...in early 2004 after only a couple hundred miles of weekend driving, it was upgraded! Jay was again used in the second build but this time he started with a Jim Butler Performance (Leoma, TN) stroker rotating assembly with a forged 4.25" stroker crank, 4340 H-beam rods, and Ross pistons that were matched to the combustion chambers for a 9.9 to 1 compression ratio that works on pump gas. It is Butler Performance's most popular engine package and was used in Lance Armstrong's 1970 GTO rebuilt on the show "Overhaulin'", so you can bet it works! An Edelbrock Performer intake replaced the factory RAIII intake and a Crane full-roller valvetrain was installed. Although I cannot find the Dyno-motive dyno sheets, as I remember it pulled around 510 hp and 540 lbs/ft of torque. In this setup it ran a 12.53@109mph at LACRs almost 3000' elevation shifting at 5200 RPM. The Quadra-Jet carb was setup by the Carb Shop and it stayed in this configuration until 2010 when the engine was redone once more. The builder this time around was Pontiac guru Bill Takanabe (also from Yorba Linda, CA) as Jay unfortunately passed away in 2009. Everything again was checked over, balanced, mic'ed, and rebuilt. A new $800 Crane roller cam and hyd lifters was installed with .488 lift (specs included) that made the car much more driveable. The factory RAIII intake was re-installed and all of the vacuum accessory hoses were done as factory (see pics), including the PCV valve. It has electronic ignition, MSD wires, and a custom set of Doug's equal length headers. It now has a "lopey" idle at 800 RPM, pulls excellent vacuum (power brakes are incredible!), stays between 175-200 degrees all day even in traffic on a 95 degree day, and sounds AWESOME! This engine really could go from LA to NY with no issues, it is that solid!!! It even has billet pulleys that were powder coated black to look stock. This engine looks factory stock...but it's NOT! The custom exhaust has Flowmaster mufflers and an electric cut-out, just for fun (no officer, it wasn't me running un-corked, there was a loud Subaru that passed me though, maybe it was him?). The aluminum radiator is a total custom from Rodney Red that was not cheap. The Turbo 400 trans was rebuilt by Hubbe in Corona, CA and it really compliments this engine nicely. It has a 1600-1700 RPM stall 12' converter and when shifting manually, it is as solid as a rock chirping the tires on the 1-2 shift and the 2-3 shift as well. If you want to drive normally, put it into Drive and it shifts like a stock trans should. The car really is docile to drive until you start giving it gas, then it comes alive. My wife at first thought it would be tough to drive but she actaully likes driving it although admits she is scared by the power when you step on the gas. The rear-ends in Pontiacs were 10 bolt GMs. They did not have an option for the much stronger 12 bolt like Chevys had. However, this GTO has a Chevelle 12 bolt (completely new from drum to drum) that was installed in the factory position. Chevelles, 442s, GSs, and GTOs were GM A-bodies so their rear-end fits right in. It is a posi (of course) with a 3.42-1 ratio done professionally by J&S Gear out of Huntington Beach, CA. I'm sure I am missing things but let's get to the pictures and more details, shall we? GR-RRR!!! The part of the car most see when the gas pedal is pushed down! This car looks great from any side! The view is magnificent, and the hills and valley look good too! Let's start to look a little more closely at the straight body and super clean stainless trim... Are you getting the picture? This ride is CLEAN!!! As I said before, CLEAN! There is no fear to show this car this close as it is straight as an arrow. Two paint chips on the leading edge of the passenger door. 2 inch scratch to the right of my reflection. 3 inch scratch on the trunk lid. Drivers door has almost the exact same chip as the passenger side. Rear bumper left side has slight chrome discoloration, pretty good for original chrome!!! Hard to beleive this is 40 years old!!! Most GM A-body cars (GTO, Chevelle, 442, GS) had major rust issues in the lower rear window area but not this rust free SoCal GTO!!! Just examine not only the body, but the trim and paint. It's near perfect! What you get to see walking up and entering this awesome car! It is just like out of the 70s, sport wheel, console, it's pretty inviting, huh? SHOTGUN!!! As you can see, the door panels are in incredible ORIGINAL condition, there are a couple of small areas on the lower carpet that are discolored from being bumped by feet exiting the car. The great thing about this is you can replace them for about $45. No need to ruin the factory panel, just replace the carpet!!! Same on passenger side, awesome ORIGINAL condition except the fading on the replaceable lower carpet trims. Although the stainless on this GTO is in excellent condition, the outside mirrors do have the normal pitting. I couldn't get rid of the originals but you may want to replace. Remote on driver's side works as normal, just not electric (my wife and daughters think this is so funny!). Close-ups of the window stainless, as all of the stainless, it's in great condition. This rear shot was taken to show how the car looks from behind as you are following it. Super clean, and the only clue to the power is the 12-bolt. It also has the rear sway bar. GTO fanatics know how rare that is. I took this crazy shot just to make sure every nook and cranny of this gorgeous car was shown. Look closely, no rust and no BENT SUPPORTS ETC. It is really that clean!!! Passenger side inside fenderwell showing the rebuilt control arm bushings. Redone about 8 years ago but as you see, as new. Literally only a couple thousand miles since they were redone. Same on the driver's side! Super clean everywhere! The stroker combo getting put together! There are numorous pictures like this to document the build as well as receipts, but here is just one to prove it!!! ARP fasteners hold it all together. A pretty blurry photo of the Goat when it's doghouse was removed for paint (with the rest of the car too). Every nut and bolt was cleaned, painted, etc. then re-installed as factory. The under hood shots coming up will show you. Totally redone. Underside shot of the left side of the 12 bolt rear end. Notice KYB Gas-a-just shocks, the ONLY muscle car shock that works! Right side this time, KYBs and Flowmasters. If you look close you can see the exhaust cutouts. The rear has new bushings and springs and the sway bar (with boxed control arms) really keeps the back end solid while driving. Underside of the front end and engine, yes, it's that clean and that fresh. Moving slightly rearward you can see how truly clean this GTO is. Doug's equal length headers and the billet hi-torque starter are seen. This car has only the best from top to bottom. Moving farther back and looking toward the front now. NO RUST, NO DAMAGE!!! Custom exhaust, etc, etc, etc. The exhaust cutouts, flip a lever under the dash and these open up...'nuff said! Custom, balanced chromolly driveshaft with heavy duty u-joints. Pictures do not lie, there was tons of $$$ spent on this build. EVERYTHING was redone mechanically. Even the parking brake cables were replaced to make sure they work properly (which they do). No hiding anything with pictures like this!!! Really a great driving car because of the expense put into the details!!! Valve cover removed to show the roller rockers. This car has NOTHING to hide...it is built professionally and runs incredibly well. A front shot of the billet pulleys and new Milodon water pump. New bolts, etc. Rodney Red custom aluminum radiator, it keeps this engine running wonderfully cool. Again, no expense spared!!! A shot showing the accessory vacuum lines, PCV, and just another close-up to show the detail to which this engine has had. Look at the manifold bolts...they were not painted over like most "restored" cars for sale. This one is that nice!!! Really!!! Under hood picture, again, details! No embarassment opening the hood on this GTO. This is a factory A/C car and all of the factory parts are included with the sale so you can hook it up if you want. I am even giving you a new POA valve and some new (Vintage Air) parts to make it work. With the factory dual snorkel air cleaner, I know it's setup like a RAIII, but you can buy a Ram Air pan!!! I just stopped spending money on this Goat!!! The braking system on this GTO has been TOTALLY redone with new master cylinder, booster, hard and soft lines, and rebuilt calipers. The drums in the rear are new as they came with the completely new 12 bolt rear. Look at the fender bolts, everything painted properly and separately. Straight inner fenders etc etc. Straight fenders, inner fenders, and all sheetmetal, again, pictures don't lie! It's that nice!!! Driver's side interior, nothing missing, everything original and working, Orig seatbelt and shoulder belt. Passenger side interior, as driver's side, original and all there. That cable attached to the iPhone is the AUX cable hooked up to the custom stereo hidden in the glovebox. Rear seat with all of the seatbelts. As you can seriously see, this car is driven. My daughters love riding to car shows and just cruising in this thing. It's ready to go... Autometer autogages (nice spelling) keep a check on everything. Sony CDX-GT500 (love the model #, sounds like a Shelby code!). You can look up the model to see the specs but this car has a incredible stereo system. Infinity speakers inside the car powered by an Infinity amplifier plus JL Audio subs in a custom fit box in the trunk powered by a JL Audio amplifier (see pics of trunk). The sub box is easily removable and I don't have a pic of it but really compliments the low bass notes. Country, Rock, Hip-Hop and Top 40 are the constant arguments when we drive this GTO somewhere! Jim Wangers' signature on the visor. He supposedly "loved this car". I think he loves all GTOs!!! Shoulder belts are in original and clean condition, both sides. Original miles, original odo. Crack in the original dash. This will really show you the level of thought put into this car and it's drivability. These are Wheel Vintiques 15" Rally II customs with BFGs. They make a huge difference in the way the car drives plus really fill up the wheel wells and look very nice. Trunk area, no rust, no dents, no collisions. Up close. Driver's side inside 1/4 panel. Passenger's side inside 1/4 panel. 14" factory spare. Amplifiers in the trunk, please do not look at the wiring as this is a photo from when the JL Audio amp was being installed for the sub box and this is the test wiring being setup. The wiring is done professionally like everything else in this car so don't worry, if you buy the GTO know this is already done! Just some of the documentation included with this AWESOME GTO!!! The open folder on the lower left of the picture has 2/3 more stuff...pics, receipts, specs, etc. Now that you have seen it all, let me tell you the stuff that needs to be done. As mentioned before, this is a factory A/C GTO and still has all of the vents and ducting for it. I have replaced the heater core within the last couple of months and have to admit, I'm getting too old for it! I have all of the parts to completely redo the A/C except a new compressor. The brackets, hoses, belts, lines and fittings, everything! You just need to install. It was not redone before this last rebuild as that engine's cam combo was not setup for enough vacuum etc. Plain and simple, it was too radical to be air conditioned! Now that the engine has been tamed down a little, the A/C will work perfectly. There are lots of little extras you will get with this GTO too. I have a front spoiler that is included, a K&N free flowing air cleaner, factory Pontiac floor mats, plus boxes of miscellaneous items that I have picked up over the years. This GTO is an absolute pleasure to drive. Although it has been down the track a HANDFUL of times at car shows and events, it has never been abused. It has always been well taken care of. Money has never been an object with this car as you can clearly see. When you drive this car anywhere, it starts right up, will idle all day long, NEVER overheats, steers and handles better that new, shifts perfectly, and gets attention from every passerby, especially because of it's beautiful exhaust note. I have had several "muscle cars" over the years and this one is the best driver of them all because of the extra $ spent on the drivetrain and mechanicals. Family cruising is super fun and everyone fights over who gets to play the next song. Even my total resto big-block Galaxie (although perfect in every detail) was no comparison to this GTO, it just drives that good and is that much fun!!! Please do not mistake this as a trailler queen show car, it is super clean and super nice but ALWAYS driven where it is going (and for that matter, driven home too!). There are many cars out there for sale and it is always interesting to look at the photos, tons of new engine paint overspray where they try ro make it look rebuilt and new, overspray everywhere from a quick repaint, NEVER underbody shots to show the real car, and an auction that makes you try to guess the real condition of the vehicle. Not the case here, I'm honest and tried to photo every angle and tell you every story about this GTO upfront so you will have no worries. Believe me when I tell you, this car will have you smiling the minute you turn the key! Well, there you have it. NO RESERVE bidding on this truly clean, rust free, beautiful example of musclecar glory. This GTO has always been taken care of and had nothing but the best. Bid with confidence knowing that my 100% feedback is there for a reason. I have sold several cars and numerous parts over the years and have never had a bad mark.
