Vehicle Detail

1978 Y88 Trans Am SE 4 speed - PHS documentation! Up for auction with no reserve is my 1978 Trans Am Y88. It is a running, driving car. Engine fires right up with no smoke or noise, nothing leaks...transmission is solid and clutch is decent. Brakes have firm pedal feel (although the front right is grabbing), power steering works. Fuel pump is brand new and carburetor was rebuilt. Transmission is new, carpet is new. Wipers work, lights work, horn works. Power windows still roll up and down! Car was originally equipped with the W72 400. Previous owner dropped in a 1972 455, most likely from a Grand Ville or a Grand Prix. Engine is a YC code with 7M5 heads (250hp 4bbl version). Quadrajet recently rebuilt, engine fires easily and settles into a nice low purr idle. No smoke, no leaks, no noise. Transmission is a Muncie M20 4 speed - case 3851325 (1963-1965). Hurst lever. Original Borg Warner Super T10 is included with the car (vin matching). Gears all operate perfectly, no grinding. Left ears on the trans case were reinforced to prevent failure. Clutch still grabs decently. Previous owner decided to "primer" the car. Solar gold paint was simply sprayed over...although some sanding seems to have taken place. Only the right rear quarter looks like it will have to be completely replaced (dented and standing water rusted out the bottom). Body will need to be sanded, a few dents need attention, primed correctly and painted. Spoilers are newer (from another Y88 car). I recently rebuilt the driver's door hinge and replaced the exterior handle. When I got the car, the fender had been hastily put back on the car and made it impossible to open the drivers door without rubbing. This has all been corrected. Subframe is solid. Floorpans have some rust, it looks like the previous owner left the car outside and water got into the carpet/padding and slowly rusted the floorpans over a few years. Trunk is solid, only a little surface rust. Carpet is new. This car is at a great state. It could either be restored as a Y88 SE car or it could be taken the "black t/a" route. Mechanically it needs very little (A/C compressor, light brake servicing...new shocks and bushings couldn't hurt). After two years I haven't made nearly enough progress, it's time to let someone else finish what I most likely never will. Money and time continue to work against me :) Clear Texas title in hand. Odometer reads 89,027...I'm sure it has rolled over. I'm happy to answer any questions or provide additional photos is requested. I can also shoot video of the car running if anyone is interested. Good luck and happy bidding!
