Vehicle Detail

1968 Porsche 912 Coupe #12803315 I am the third owner, the previous owner bought the car in San Francisco in 1980. She kept it with occasional use until 2009. I have all records from about 1974, plus the owner's manual and case. Tool bag has a pulley wrench and one red handled flat screwdriver. Car rides on four 14 inch Fuchs alloys with near new tires. Include with the car are four 5.5 x 15 chrome wheels, date coded and original. They are in good, but not excellent condition, with slight rust showing in the seams. Spare is a properly date coded painted steel wheel in very good condition with an original tire. Power train Engine was rebuilt years ago (1970s) by Garretson Enterprises. I kid Bob about that, wondering if his warranty is still in effect. The top end was re-done with heads from a '69 (good used heads from Vic Skirmants). The original '68 heads were both cracked. Tim Berardelli in VA did the valve job and refurbished all the valve train components. It has new rings on the OEM pistons. Cylinders were cc'ed to achieve a 9.1:1 compression ratio. It has a Shasta Design full flow oil system with remote filter from Duane Spencer. An OE muffler and proper exhaust pipes and tip are installed. Heater boxes were bead blasted, painted and adjusted. Engine tin was cleaned and powder coated. There are new plug ends, rubber discs, wires, cap, etc. A new proper, 031 distributor from Vintage Werks was installed. Proper rebuilt Solex 40 PII carbs from Jim Kaufmann at Carburetor Rescue were installed. Engine bay gasket and sound insulation were replaced. All fasteners were cleaned, plated or replaced. Transmission (5 speed) was rebuilt by Auto Edge 3000 miles ago. Clutch, CV joints, are all good. New battery. Brakes were checked (caliper pistons, pads, rotors), cleaned and painted. One new brake line in front. Rear wheels have a 1/4 inch spacer installed. Details, body. Generally, it was a very solid car but a water leak caused the passenger floor to rust from the inside. The right pan half was replaced. Entire floor was cleaned and sealed with DP 40 Epoxy and coated with Wurth schutz. Sound deadening was installed with a foam underlayment. Front suspension point at right side of "horseshoe" was weak. Front pan and complete nose panel were replaced. Side marker holes were welded, small dents and dings were repaired. Lower edges of front fenders were weld repaired. Car was painted except jams and inside hood. The underside was cleaned and painted. All rubber seals were replaced: hood, doors, front and rear windows, rear side windows and door window "scrapers". All rocker and bumper trim was replaced. All chrome is in very good condition. Side markers (ugh!) are in a bag and come with the car. Original orange crest is in place on the hood. Suspension. Front suspension was cleaned, bead blasted and painted. All brake parts were cleaned and painted. All fasteners were replaced or cleaned and painted/plated. Rear suspension was reset at a lower height, torsion bar covers bead blasted and painted. One torsion bar bushing replaced. New KYB gas shocks are in place at all four corners. The car was four-wheel aligned and is lowered slightly. Gas tank was cleaned, checked inside, coated with Wurth schutz and painted. New seal and vapor tubes installed. New sender gasket. All new fuel lines installed. Pedal assembly was bead blasted, cleaned and painted, with new bushings and foot pads. Floor pan area was cleaned and sealed with DP 40 Epoxy. Shift base bushings were replaced, and the assembly was cleaned and lubricated. Rear tunnel shift coupler was re-bushed. Interior. Seats were disassembled and rebuilt with extra foam. One panel on driver's seat back was replaced. New perlon carpets were installed throughout. New vinyl replaced sun-worn area on rear deck. Door pockets were repaired. A new headliner is installed. Visors are in excellent condition. Mirror glass silvering has some deterioration, but is usable. Dashboard is cracked in the center (typical). Door panels are very good, the 1968 funky pockets work fine, with new elastic. Original rubber mats are installed. New Perlon carpet mats also go with the car. Radio (Becker) is not hooked up and I don't think it works. Clock does not work, as far as I know. I use neither of these items so it's a very low priority for me. Horn, wipers, washers (new pump) turn signals, hazard signals all work. Wiring in the car is in excellent shape. Wooden foot well covers are in very good shape. Seat support brackets were cleaned and painted, heater slides also. Seat belts are from the period. I would replace if I was to keep the car. This is a very nice 912 in a classic color from the short-wheelbase period. It would be difficult to restore a car to this level for this kind of money. I can help arrange transportation or you can drive it home. Car is for sale locally and I reserve the right to sell without notice. Please email if you have questions to gmaltby@rpmautobooks.com. On Apr-19-11 at 13:51:10 PDT, seller added the following information: Engine work described was performed in 2010. Car has been driven 360 miles since then. Also, an ammeter and oil pressure gauge (VDO) have been in the car for many years. A new combo sender is installed at the engine. On Apr-21-11 at 11:25:43 PDT, seller added the following information: This 912 will be featured on the cover of a new edition of Duane Spencer's "The Complete Porsche 912 Guide" due out in September. A new chapter on restoration will show many other photos of the car. The third edition of the book will be out in September. You can see it at www.rpmautobooks.com Included with the car are many spare parts. A partial list: Front sway bar with outer clamps and drop links, body bushings, all clean and painted. USA headlights and chrome trim. Extra ignition parts, distributor, glove box door, much more.
