The Ford Flex is a good-looking, high-tech alternative for families who want minivan features without minivan style. Its unique exterior design, powerful engine options and spacious third-row seat make it a winner in its class.

The Flex has racked up several honors since its introduction as a 2009 model. In fact, the 2009 model was a nominee for Road & Travel's International Car of the Year. "Unlike recently introduced Fords that were long on function and short on style, Flex has both in spades,” writes Consumer Guide. “While styling is subjective, Flex's spacious cabin and cargo area meet high objective standards."

The roomy Flex is especially alluring if you want a decidedly un-minivan-like driving experience. Priced about average for its class, and, with its unique combination of elements makes it a great value. No other SUV, minivan or wagon looks nearly as cool or packs in so many family-friendly features.

Inside and out, the Flex is dazzling. Panel gaps, paint, surface textures—all are superb. The front doors close heavily and silently. There are seven dome lights and a like number of available hues for footwell illumination.

The cockpit demonstrates Lexus-like attention to detail, including contrasting leather stitching. Second-row riders will enjoy the wedge-shaped footrests, à la Rolls-Royce. The silky off-white headliner brightens what might otherwise have been a dark office, and the elegant trim is dispersed to persuasive effect. In fact, the cockpit is sufficiently luxurious that the Flex could easily have been sold as a Lincoln. The optional “Vista Roof” includes one sliding sunroof over the front seats, two fixed “portholes” above the middle seats, and a 33-by-16-inch fixed pane above the third row.
