Vehicle Detail
1973 Dodge D100 Club Cab Custom Sportsman (Adventurer) 2WD 6-1/2' short bed See added information below about the gas tank.... (just realized I had forgot to mention it) RARE FIRST YEAR OF THE “CLUB CAB”, mostly original! I have some literature that will come with the truck showing this, including a Dodge pamphlet from ’73 telling about the ALL NEW “Club Cab”… see the picture of the pamphlet, the truck shown in the brochure and on the cover is this truck!!!! This unique truck is in very good condition. No major rust (a southern truck), solid bed. Odometer, Speedometer and all gauges work! All interior lights work, dash and even ashtray, has both original rear jump seats! Interior light when the doors are open. Both doors lock and unlock with key, windows roll up and down easily, vent windows work and lock. As far as I know and was told the truck has 106,xxx miles, but who knows in an older truck like this. However considering the great condition of a 39 yo truck it’s very possible??? I have an owner’s manual and a maintenance CD also to come with the truck. Truck runs good. A couple of months ago I drove the truck on a 150 mile trip and had no issues. I sat in line to take yard waste for an hour idling the other weekend in the truck in 80° weather and the temp stayed normal. Truck has a large 3 core radiator, which is great for an older truck like this. I have part of the original build sheet (email me and I can send you a picture) Southern Truck (Alabama / South Carolina) 318 V8 Engine – Engine has been replaced, as the vin shows originally it had a J400 V8. From what I read they are not as reliable as the good ole 318. Automatic Transmission 727 (3 spd) - shifts great! Truck is LOADED for a ’73… (not by today’s standards but was then) Adventurer Club Cab w/ rear jump seats, two-tone paint (option) Factory A/C (WORKS AND IS COLD) (option) Factory Rear Sliding Rear Window (option and rare) Factory Accessory Bed Light (option and rare) Factory Electronic Ignition (yes an option in 73) Factory AM/FM radio (option) original comes with truck but not installed, currently has detachable face CD player (see pic) Factory Cruise Control (option) all parts seem to be there but does not work Factory Clock (option) does not work If the price is right and you are interested, I have a factory tachometer that can go in the hole where the clock is located. I bought this to install but never got around to it. I have some of the wiring that goes with it and a schematic. Most trucks had a blank panel there, it was an option for a clock or tachometer. Let me know if you’re interested, otherwise I will sale the tachometer to recoup my investment… Here is the story I got when I purchased the truck in August of 2009. The truck sat after it overheated and warped the head of the original 400 in a garage in Alabama from 1992 until 2007 (15 YEARS). I have a registration from Alabama saying last registration was 1992 when previous owner registered it. Finally a dealer purchased it from the owner’s son in 2007 and did the following to the truck to get it back on the road/fixed up. I did not get any documentation of the work done as he did most of it himself, but you can tell by looking at the truck and pictures most of it was done. Installed a newer 318 V8 w/ new headers and entire new dual exhaust system Installed new plug wires, rotor and ignition amp New thermostat, water pump, hoses and belts New AC and heater components/switches including compressor New high power starter and alternator Power steering pump rebuilt / doesn’t leak (common on these trucks) New aluminum bullet hole wheels and Michelin white letter tires Truck was painted on exterior (same original color as inside cab and under the hood) see brocure picture! this is the truck! Interior got new carpet and some cracks in front seat stitched up (still has a couple small 4-5" cracks) Detachable face CD player and 2 speakers behind seats in boxes (removeable boxes if needed) Truck is pretty stock besides the aftermaket exhaust manifold and dual exhaust, as far as I can tell. Some emissions have been bypassed but most parts are still there. Ignition system is still stock type, carburetor is stock Holly 2 barrel, stock air intake. Original radio comes with if you wanted to put it back in. GREAT TRUCK FOR RESTORATION OR JUST A GOOD OLE DEPENDABLE TRUCK! Since I have had the truck all I have done is maintenance. Had carb rebuilt and tune up. I have changed plugs, fuel filter, egr valve, crankcase ventilation filter. I installed a K&N lifetime air filter. Of course I have done oil changes and filters every 3-4 months, regardless of mileage. I use 10w-30 high mileage oil in the truck. I have had no mechanical issues with the truck since I purchased it in ’09 and have put around 3-4k miles on it. I do drive the truck once a week at least (I only work 3 miles from home) or to run an errand, etc. The bad (yes it is a 39 yo truck and not fully restored, mostly original)… Runs good, but needs a full tune up for optimum performance Leaks a small amount of oil around the valve cover and maybe somewhere else, I’m not sure. I don’t have to add any oil between oil changes. When it sits in the garage for a week it only leaks a very small drop, if any on the floor. Also it has a very small puff of blue smoke on start up sometimes (valve seals, and this is very common on older engines that were designed for leaded fuel. This is a pretty cheap fix but it wasn't bad enough for me to have it fixed, as its only a small puff on start up). Has a small transmission leak around where the speedometer cable goes into it, as best I can tell. This is an easy fix but is a very small leak, I just keep an eye on the level and have added 2 quarts total since I have owned it. Transmission is strong and shifts smoothly as it should. The paint job that was done on the truck, was not the best you can get. Truck still looks good and turns head when driving it but when you look closely it has its flaws including a few minor dents and some small areas of rust coming thru or paint bubbling from rust below (see pics). The hood shows some signs of slight oxidation, I have polished/waxed it by hand and it looks better. I think a professional polish, buff and wax would make it pretty close to perfect. **********Previous owner was rear ended in the truck, rear bumper was bent (he tried to bend it back). Tailgate was replaced, if you look closely the paint doesn't match 100%. The areas behind the bumper were bent when it was pushed into it. Again, this is a minor flaw overall, but making you aware of it. If you look in the 2nd picture you can see the bumper looks kinda sloped down. If you look at the last picture you can see a close up of the area and tailgate. This is in my opinion the worst exterior flaw of the truck, but a replacement bumper is an easy inexpensive fix, but it doesn't look too bad, so I never worried with it.********* Added 4/5/2011 ****** The gas tank (original I assume) is made of plastic, and they harden and crack (after 39 years). This one has a crack or 2 along the top where the lines go into it (I was told by previous owner). The previous owner added a support under the tank to help keep it from getting any more damage from being fragile. He also has it wrapped up in plastic. Tank is located under the bed. I have driven the truck like this for 2 years as he did, just not filling it up above a 1/2 to 2/3 tank or you will smell gas as it sloshes around as you drive and gets damp around the tank, but didn't see any leak (I tried once filling it up). You can buy replacement tanks online or have one made, but I have just dealt with it, didn't fill it up and have not had any issues. Fuel gauge does work! ***** Added 4/6/2011 I have tried to honestly explain in detail as much as possible about the truck and what I know. The bad really isn’t that bad for a 39 yo truck and we all know even a 7 year old vehicle normally has some kind of issues. Truck runs great mechanically, all gauges work, doors lock, etc. Truck is sound, I drove it home from Alabama and as stated above have had no mechanical issues in my owning it, only maintenance. It could be a daily driver, part time 2nd truck as I’ve used it or great for restoration. It is a great example of a rare first year “Club Cab” mostly original!. Please read over all the details I have given, before purchase as I have tried to describe everything in great detail. Most people do not tell you everything they know about a vehicle, I have tried my best. Please ask any questions via email and if you want to talk via phone ask for my number. Truck is for sale locally, so if sold I will end the auction early. Thanks! See below for a VIN decoder of the truck... Decodes Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) from most Dodge, Plymouth, and Fargo Light-Duty Trucks manufactured from 1936-1980. Over the years Dodge had several different lengths (from 7 to 13 characters) and styles (mix of alphabetic and numeric characters) for identification numbers; this decoder attempts to correctly recognize and properly decode the variations. This VIN Decoder is based on official Chrysler documentation including Parts Lists, Service Manuals, and Serial Number Guides. Some of the information presented such as wheelbase, engine displacement, and engineering codes, is not directly addressed in the identification number but is extrapolated from the appropriate Chrysler documentation. Please report any errors, additions, suggestions to the email address at the bottom of the page. Serial Number D17AJ3S096553 Make Dodge Model D1 - D100 Body Style 7 - Flat Face Cowl; Club Cab with Sweptline Box; Compact Mid-Line Extended Body Maxiwagon (Custom Sportsman) Gross Vehicle Weight A - 6,000 lbs or less Engine J - 400 V8 Year 1973 Plant S - Warren Truck #1 Wheelbase 115,131,133,149 Rating 1/2 Ton Build Number 96553 As you can see from afar the truck looks near perfect in first 9 pictures. At this point the rust that does exist can easily be fixed, and no need for patches. There is no areas rusted thru or weaked from bad rust that I have seen, the truck is made of steel, rust is evident and this truck is great for its age! I added 14 more detailed pictures starting with the tire picture, see descriptions in order: 1. Close up tire/tread picture (White letter Michelin tires with about 5k miles) 2. Drivers side between front tire and door (surface rust around trim, this is the worst spot of rust on the truck) 3. Drivers side at bottom rear corner of cab behind door (rust around trim, probably rust from back of the moulding) 4. Drivers side at top rear corner behind door (see spots around seam) 5. Passenger side at top rear corner behind door (see spots around seam) 6. Water lip above front windshield (some surface rust areas) 7. Passenger side behind door, seam looks as if rust under the paint? 8. Drivers side area above rear tire (can see some spots of probable under surface rust) 9. Picture showing close up of bed (can see some surface rust) Bed is solid 10. Picture of front bench seat 11. Area behind front seats, shows removable speaker boxes and jump seat folded up 12. Close up of odometer (Reads 06,065), behind the speedometer hand is a zero 13. Picture of dash (only flaw is a 1" crack, which barely noticeable) 14. The inside cover of the '73 Dodge truck brocure I have telling about the "ALL NEW CLUB CAB" 15. Picture showing damage where bumper was pushed into the bed when it was rear ended. I have tried to give as much detail, but if you would like to see more pictures please email me and ask. Keywords: 4X4, 4wd, W100, Ram, Power Ram
