Vehicle Detail
reluctantly up for sale is my pride, my joy, my obsession, my 1966 corvair monza 2 door hardtop. left knee (clutch operating leg) surgery and only partial recovery makes driving this 4 speed beauty a painful proposition. even Sunny Sunday driving (the reason i purchased this car) has become too much for me. it's just sitting at the house, unused and undriven most of the time now. this eye catching beauty has the dual carb, 110 horsepower, 6 cylinder engine and 4 speed manual transmission. the previous owner claimed to have had the engine "rebuilt" but couldn't furnish me with any paperwork supporting his claim; saying that a friend of his did the work on a barter basis. i do know that it runs smoothly, pulls strongly (i've owned several corvairs for comparison) and has very little "blow by" coming out of the pcv/air cleaner breather ( a sign of a high mileage, worn out engine). i have watched the rear view mirror when accelerating swiftly at night and have not noticed any exhaust smoke in the headlights of the car behind me. thanks to recent carburator balancing (by a professional mechanic, not me!), new distributor cap, spark plug wires and pertronix electronic point elimination system; this car starts on the first time, every time...even after sitting for days at a time! the slightly louder-than-factory dual exhaust system makes for a pleasant growl at idle; but not at all loudloud at cruising speeds. the 4 speed gearbox upshifts and downshifts as good as any other corvair i have driven; and better than most corvairs do. the clutch "lets out" right past the middle of the pedal travel. one respray in the factory color of Maderia Maroon was done appx. 4 years ago (as reported by the previous owner). at the same time, the "silver cove" around the tail lights and exhaust grille was added. it still has a VERY nice, smooth, balanced overall shine to it, with no obvious fading, as the pictures here show. a few nicks and scratches are there, but no dents that i can make out. the light gold, factory copy pinstriping on the side body line of the car sets off the natural curves of the corvair body subtly. the usual corvair rust on the driver's side lower fenders is there, as shown in the pics here. it is slow moving rust bubbles, on the car when i bought it and progressing no further. there appears to be NO rust showing around the windshield or back window, the usual GM rust out zone of this era. the floor boards are all solid and firm feeling. the light brown/buckskin vinyl interior is about as perfect as one can expect for a 1966 car, Soft and Supple. i would rate it a 9 out of 10 with NO rips or tears showing. a replacement headliner and glove box liner was installed by the previous owner. all the windows roll up & down easily and smoothly. the turn signals operate fine, horn blows, head light & stop lights all work. even the interior dome light works! someone in the recent past must (perhaps when the engine was "rebuilt"?) have installed viton push rod o-ring seals, as this car does not "mark it's territory" by dropping oil on the driveway, like all too many corvairs can do. options include: bumper guards, driver's door remote control mirror, factory am radio (not working, who listens to AM?), working (but weak) heater and strong fan blower, pin stripes, "period correct" floor mats and old 1960's aanco brand aftermarket shift knob. added dynamat sound deadening material under the new carpeting, with a double layer behind the rear seat and under the back window area, makes a big difference in interior quietness. there is darn-near-new weatherstripping rubber on the front trunk and rear engine compartment, both doors, roof rail weatherstripping and between the side windows. this car is NOT a perfect pebble beach concours car show winner! it IS a VERY attractive, head turning "Daily Driver" or "Weekend Cruiser". it receives favorable comment from ALL age groups. i must confess, sometimes the multiple comments, horn honks and "thumbs up" during a weekend drive became almost tiresome. this is NOT the car to own if you shun attention from people! legal stuff: this is a used, 45 year old car. it is sold as-is, with no warranty given or implied. what you see here is what you get! it has all the quirks and "personality" that old cars can sometimes have. payment can be rendered by a money order or by paypal. a $500.00, NON REFUNDABLE (PLEASE don't bid if you aren't serious!!) deposit should be made within 48 hours of the auction closing, the balance within 7 days of the auction closing. delivery is not included in the purchase price. this car is also being advertised locally. i reserve the right to end this aution early if sold by a non-ebaymotors source. the front license plate will not be included in this sale. i find this Maderia Maroon Monza a very fun car to own, drive and to be seen in. the interior and exterior color and quality are most appealing in person. when i bought it and "went thru it" my intention was of it being a "Long Term Keeper" (pre-knee injury/surgery). i would sell this car to someone i know with no hesitation. having to sell it upsets me more than i can tell you. please email me with any quesions.
