When Pontiac introduced the Firebird in mid-1967, they were officially entering the pony car race. Ford was leading the field with this very popular Mustang and Chevrolet had their Camaro which was also proving to be what the public was seeking. Five months after the Camaro's introduction, the Firebird entered production and offered buyers a choice of both six- and eight-cylinder engines. The Firebird was based heavily on the Chevrolet Camaro chassis design. It used the same front fenders, doors, and rear fenders as the Camaro, but had a split front grille, beaked hood, and GTO-styled louvered taillights. This 1969 Pontiac Firebird Two-Door Sport Coupe is well equipped with a 350 cubic-inch motor, automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, five spoke Camero alloy wheels, BF Goodrich radials, (rear) remote door locks, shoulder harness belts, headrests, water temp gauge and simulated wood center console, all in a deluxe interior. Coming from a mature, private collector, the car is painted in a driver quality Corvette yellow with black interior and is in VERY GOOD OVERALL CONDITION. Although not a show car, this simple Bird is a living, breathing, serviceable machine that has exceeded the proud owner’s expectations in every way. This is a very fast, reliable muscle car that doesn’t look like a cobbled together pile of aftermarket bolt-ons. Let’s take a closer look now. Exterior: With the exception of some paint bubbles from surface rust and few minor dents, chips and scratches, the finish still looks great and there is absolutely NO evidence of major body or frame repair or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights. Note the areas in the detailed photos which show minor rust coming through the paint. These few isolated areas were probably caused by water that became trapped in a paint chip, body seam or trim piece which exposed the metal. Fortunately, this doesn't appear to be a back-East car because it doesn't have major corrosion below from exposure to road salt, etc. This only looks to be minor, surface rust. (see photos) All and all, for a 42 year-old body, she doesn’t look half bad! Mounted to the 5-Spoke Camaro Alloy wheels are BF Goodrich Radials Rear and Diamondback radials, front. Engine & Mechanical: The 350 V8 engine and transmission are in great running condition. Surprisingly perhaps, the wiring looks fantastic, the car always runs cool, and there are no oil leaks worth mentioning. The 350 cubic inch, 8-cylinder power plant sounds crisp and runs smoothly with a nice rumble (possibly a street cam?) with superb oil pressure, cold or hot. Warmed up, coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs at higher speeds or in rush hour traffic on a hot summer day. All in all, the engine, transmission and rear-end are all solid; making this Firebird is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Yes, any GM drive train can be very tough and reliable with a bit of preventative maintenance! Interior: Bare-bones functionality highlights this original interior. The factory correct, black interior is absolutely immaculate. Although the headliner has been hand-stitched, the dash pad has a couple cracks and the seats inserts need repair, this interior is not really in need of being completely redone. The carpet and door panels still look great, as do the instruments and simulated wood trim around the center console and dash. There are nice covers for the seats which have factory correct headrests and seat belts with shoulder harnesses for 5 passengers. The Alpine AM/FM/CD 6 Speaker Audio System sound great even at speeds exceeding double nickel. Oh, and as you can see, it comes with a full tank of gas! From the loop carpeting to the door panels and headliner; everything looks fairly decent and is fully functional. Above photo shows light surface rust on the top, door hinge hardware. Let’s look in the trunk: A closer look in the trunk shows a nice custom car cover, the stock air cleaner, 4 floormats, spare tire, jack and lug wrench and a nice pair of 6 X 9 speakers in the real panel. Let’s take a peak underneath: Check out all the new bushings, shocks and other cool stuff. Here you can see minimal surface rust but overall; a nice, original, collision AND corrosion free chassis. Please see in the above photo that all the bushings look to be new in the front suspension. Drivability: Paramount to the Muscle Car driving experience is the element of unadulterated fun. This engine starts a little cold but once warm, idles smoothly, revs and pulls like an F-16 Fighter Jet, shifting smoothly through the gears with no unusual noises or smoke. Smooth, strong acceleration will pull you into the back of your seat and turn heads coming and going. With rebuilt suspension components and newer radial tires, handling and braking are simple and superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies, pulling or fading. All in all, this Firebird is a thoroughly convincing performer. In its present condition, this Firebird will not win first place at the Grand Prix or at the Pebble Beach car show but it WILL win over your heart. Looking back, you realize that, somewhere in time, the chapter of the true muscle car has ended. It has ended with the introduction of catalytic converters and engine management systems; it has ended with the worldwide popularity of power windows and power-assisted thinking, even in the US. It has ended with the ’69 Pontiac. This Firebird 350 however, is up to any task imaginable. It could serve as a show car, a "new" old car to relive the good old days, or simply as a reliable, fun, daily driver during ANY time of the year. At the very least, no matter where you go, you’ll see a smile on everyone’s face, including your own. To state it succinctly: It delivers on its promise! The Pontiac Firebird is among the finest examples remaining from the pinnacle of the back-to-basics, muscle car era. Imagine owning this vintage Bird. In less than one week, you can be one of the very few to own and drive such a rare and beautiful collectible. Because NO MINIMUM RESERVE has been set, the winning bidder is guaranteed a TRUE PRICE and an OUTSTANDING VALUE! All questions must be answered and all inspections must be completed PRIOR TO BIDDING.
