Vehicle Detail

Here's a great spring project. Put her back on the road for summer. You're looking at a beautiful 1968 Mustang convertible that needs some attention but offers a wonderful opportunity for a serious pony lover/buyer. This car, a daily driver for many years, was driven into the garage you see in the pictures in April 2003 after a grumpy DMV inspector failed her for brakes, backup lights, excessive smoke and "miscellaneous suspension." It has not been driven since. The car has been dry, out of the weather and continued to start for a year or so after it was parked, but the owner moved away, intending to come home and put this beauty back in shape. He didn't. Remember Little Jackie Paper? The Red Pony has been waiting patiently ever since, but he's married and living out west. Now it's time for someone else to restore the dream. This is a six-cylinder automatic with power top and 70,300 miles on the odometer. True mileage unknown, but the car looks good. It needs attention to a number of issues. Rust, of course, is the main concern with any car this age. The Mustang shows rust in the usual places like the rockers and frame rails. The floors are intact, but there is rust underneath. A previous owner patched or covered over some places in the unibody sheet metal, and his patches have come off, exposing corrosion underneath. A veteran Mustang restorer has told me it's not that bad but definitely needs some welding. Mechanically, the car used to start (reluctantly in cold weather) and probably needs a carburetor rebuild. A couple of bottles of break fluid left in the trunk indicate it was leaking fluid, probably from the master cylinder. The transmission was working, but the drive indicator light was out when it was last driven. Turning the fan shows the pistons still move inside the cylinders. The white convertible top and hydraulic hoses were replaced in the 1990s, but the top is dirty, and some stains may not come out. The interior is original and functional, although the driver's seat seems to lean further back than normal. Shoulder straps were added to the safety belts, and a radio/cassette player and rear speakers were installed unobtrusively. The body is intact and looks good, but a close inspection reveals that the doors are tight in their frames, the rear fenders have been repainted, and one of them was repaired with Bondo, which is exposed behind the right rear wheel. All or part of the car was repainted in the original Candyapple Red.The electrics, except for the transmission indicator light and backup lights, were working when the car pulled into the garage. An excellent collection of Craftsman wrenches and tools, a hydraulic jack, mechanic's dolly, jackstands, etc. are also available separately.Car will need to be towed out of the garage and up a narrow driveway.
