Please allow time for all 78 photographs to load and inspect carefully as immaculate, low mile classics such as this, rarely come along. Look at the detailed photos of this car and you’ll feel as though you were transported back in time, to 1979 viewing a brand new BMW 633CSI. Go ahead…scroll down and see for yourself… With continued care, owning this fine automobile will make you feel that way every time you see and drive it. The original BMW E-24 6-Series coupe was a high-end, two-door luxury sports coupe. Dubbed the “Bavarian Ferrari” it was considered by many to be the most aesthetically pleasing BMW of all time. Just 86,219 units were built between November 1975 and April 1989. About half of those came to the United States. The original, carbureted 630CS was considered underpowered for the US market but the 1979 633CSI was the first have a fuel injected, 3.2 liter 6 with a computer management system, more horse power and stronger mid-range torque which gave it better real-world performance. Surprisingly, the production number for 1979 633 CSI’s sent USA was only 487 which would make any surviving example very rare today. With the average car's lifespan being about a dozen years and the attrition rate often accelerated by careless second-hand owners, it'd be a nice surprise to find an example of the species that, despite being 32 years old, still shines and sparkles like a late-model. The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of classic car enthusiasts. Such an amazing find is the miraculously well-preserved car presented for auction here! Owned for the past 2 decades by mature gentleman living here in dry South Western climates, he has treated the car like his one and only child. The result is a vintage Coupe that was always garaged; meticulously maintained and exudes pride of ownership. Exterior: Refinished some years ago from the original gold color to fabulous, Ferrari Red, the paint quality is simply amazing. After over three decades on the road, most cars have become rusty and damaged. In reality, a clean, 100% rust and accident free body with a few VERY minor chips, scuffs and scratches in the finish is a very rare and highly desirable trait of any collectible automobile! In this case, what lies beyond the shiny exterior speaks volumes about the loving care this 6 Series has always received and underscores the car's Southern California provenance. Surveying the body’s straight and smooth coachwork today, we marvel at how well the finish looks. In fact, with little preparation, this fine example of the marque could be proudly displayed a local car show or Concours d'Elegance. Brand new 16” Chrome wheels and Capitol Sport UHP 225/60R16 Radial tires were recently installed and show amazing detail. Speaking of detail, let us stress how straight the body is, how perfect the chrome, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 3-year-old, not a 3-DECADE-old car. This one is that clean! Engine & Mechanical: With the exception of the re-painted areas, (from the original gold to black/red) the car's immaculate engine compartment is all original and factory-correct. Originality abounds. This is a numbers matching BMW, featuring its factory-installed 6-cylinder engine and drive train. Beyond routine tune-ups & oil changes, thousands of dollars were invested into preventative maintenance, mainly to the engine, its ancillaries, suspension and braking systems and the oil was freshly changed. No wear item has been left unattended; As a result, this 633 is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Properly maintained, the bulletproof, 6-cylinder engine can be driven well over 250,000 without needing major work. Yes, any BMW can be a very tough and reliable automobile with a bit of preventative maintenance! We'll inspect the interior next, shall we? Like a bottle of fine wine, a vintage BMW leather interior does not age gracefully if the car is not stored properly. Typically, as these expensive BMW’s grow older and get resold or replaced by a newer car, they lose their spot in the garage and are left exposed to outside elements. Unfortunately, the great outdoors ages the interior as the expensive leather, dash and carpet become worn, dried, faded and cracked costing thousands of dollars to repair or replace. Not in this case! Always garaged, covered and never smoked in, the original, leather seats are still soft and supple, the black carpet appears untouched and the dash is pristine. The full array of factory gauges and instruments all work flawlessly. The 6-digit odometer shows a remarkably low, 106,096 ORIGINAL MILES. And the A/C blows ICE COLD. Automatic Transmission shifts seamlessly in all gears. The rear seats look as though they were never sat in. Recently, the motor was changed in the power sun roof which now glides open and closed smoothly and consistently. For added security, the previous owner bypassed the starter switch from the ignition to a “push-button style” on the dash and the A/C compressor switch is located inside the glove box. Rest assured, both work flawlessly. Note: The driver side, power widow hangs-up midway but with a little help will still go fully-up and fully-down and the radio does not currently power on. Also included are both original keys as well as the original books and owner’s Manual. This immaculate interior looks, smells and feels like it a 3 year old car, not a 31 year old car. The spacious trunk contains all the important bits; spare wheel/tire, jack & lug wrench. Deep inside the trunk is the only place that you can see the original gold paint. The Sony XM 2040F Power Amplifier looks great however we cannot test due to the stereo head currently not powering up. Oops! Who took the tools? Drivability: This Sport Coupe can cruise at speeds that many cars would struggle to reach and does so in a grand manner. Its fuel injected, 6-cylinder engine and suspension layout is intelligently engineered and the power-to-weight ratio is very favorable, indeed. In any climate, the powerful engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror. Warmed up, coolant temperature and oil pressure remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs at high speeds. Power steering is precise and the 3-speed, automatic transmission shifts seamlessly. The disc brakes anchor the car securely, in a straight line, and without any hint of fading. Throwing this CSI through the curves aided by new radial tires; handling and braking are superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. All in all, this BMW is a thoroughly convincing performer and a joy to drive! Despite its age and miles, the car is perfectly reliable and ready to be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live. Pound for pound, the 6-Cylinder BMW 633CSI is among the finest, most reliable luxury sports cars ever made. In the end, what makes these cars so desirable is the strong character. This results from a combination of heritage, styling, engineering, scarcity, and raw mystique. No other cars at affordable prices generate the same passion as the 6-Series and few PRACTICAL cars top it at ANY price. Finally, at an original 1979 starting price tag of $23,500 (the equivalent of around $85,000 today), the 6-Series has reached the bottom-end of the depreciation curve. A perfect time to buy. Being among the first year of fuel injected models, this 633CSI has fantastic appreciation potential and can easily serve as a reliable daily driver. Is this car "mint?" Of course not. No car that has been driven on the highway can rightfully be called "mint." It's a term best reserved for uncirculated coins. But being a 32-year-old Coupe with only 106,000 original miles that has always been treated with utmost respect, it's as good as it gets. To state it succinctly: This BMW will deliver on its promise! There's but one stumbling block on the way to 6-Series Heaven: Garaged, pampered, rust & collision free, unmolested, meticulously maintained examples are getting very hard to find. All the more reason to watch this one closely… Presently, we have a clear, California Title.
