Vehicle Detail
This is a three owner 1977 BMW R100RS. I have owned the bike for two and one half years and put maybe 400 miles on it. It mostly sits in my temperature controlled shop covered up and that is the reason I am offering it for sale. I purchased it from John X of Lucas, Texas. He purchased it from Hatton Ogle of Dallas, Texas. Hatton was one of the original BMW guys in the Dallas area. The original sales receipt shows Hatton purchasing it from BMW of Ft. Worth, Texas on 3-18-77. It also shows Hatton traded in a 1975 BMW R90/6 on this new 1977 BMW R100RS which was silver. Original price of $4800 less trade in of $2800. The second owner was a personal friend of Hatton's and some of my description is as he related it to me. I never knew Hatton but this bike indicates he was a very unique individual. The Lester magnesium wheels were shot peened and painted gold before being installed in 1978. The paint job was done about 1978 - 1979. Hatton also had his helmet painted to match. The original gas tank has rusted out and is no longer usuable. The helmet and tank are included in the auction although they are not usable. The helmet exterior is nice but the inside needs restored. Also included are the custom saddlebags, tank bag and side fairing bags that Hatton had made at a auto upholstery shop from convertible top material in 1979. All pieces are usuable. Hatton carried his tent in the side fairing bags. Also included is the original BMW motorcycle cover. The replacement gas tank is in excellent shape with no dents and no rust. It is painted satin black. There are two tank bags shown, one Hatton had made and the one shown attaches to the tank cover that is on the bike in the photos. Hatton's tank bag attaches to the tank by way of a piece he had made to attach to the tank, shown in photo. The only thing not working is the odometer and tripmeter. I believe this was repaired at one time but has failed again. Probably time for a new unit. The odometer shows 16,000 miles. I believe there are no more than 17,500 original miles on the bike. The bike was put in storage in 1980 when Hatton bought a new Honda GL1100 Goldwing. John took the bike out of storage in 2005. He changed the oils, replaced the battery and put new tires on it, and also took care of various maintenance you would expect. John put about 600-700 miles on the bike and I put another 300-400 miles on it. The paint job certainly isn't stock but it is an exciting period-correct custom job. Very expensive in its day. I hope this bike finds a home that appreciates what it is. This was Hatton's pride and joy. It has brought me happiness and countless smiles as well...always an attention getter. I'm sorry I don't have the original wheels. I'm told they were sold long before I acquired the bike. If you notice the brake pedal size has been increased as Hatton only had one leg. I was told he wore a wooden right leg and had the pedal enlarged to accomadate his wooden leg. Also included in the sale is:Hatton"s helmet, original gas tank, custom saddlebags, tank bag and attaching piece, side fairing bags, another tank bag, original tool kit and air pump, misc. small parts and fuses shown, homemade denim duffle bag that everything stores in (usuable but starting to deteriorate). Documentation includes original tax receipt, original purchase invoice, owners manual, BMW service manual, and a BMW technical data book for R60/7, R75/7, R100/7, R100S, R100RS. Buyer is responsible for picking up the bike and or shipping.
