WOW!!!!!!!! I JUST GOT BACK THE MARTI REPORT, AND THIS IS HOW IT READS: THE 1971 MUSTANG: Of the 149,682 1971 Mustangs, 60,453 were Sportroofs. Of them, 56 were built with 429-4V CJ Ram Air Engines, of which 38 had 4-Speed Close Ratio Manual Transmissions. 5 of them were painted Bright Red and 1 of them had Vermillion Bucket Seats. 1F02J146828 IS THAT MUSTANG!!!!!!!!!! SO THERE YOU GO, THIS IS A ONE OF ONE CAR!!! CARS LIKE THIS DON'T COME AROUND THAT OFTEN. YOU ARE LOOKING AT A VERY RARE AND ORIGINAL BRIGHT RED 1971 MUSTANG FASTBACK WITH THE COVETED NUMBERS-MATCHING J-CODE 429 COBRA-JET RAM-AIR ENGINE AND CLOSE RATIO 4-SPEED TOPLOADER TRANSMISSION. THIS CAR WAS SOLD NEW IN RIVERSIDE CALIFORNIA AND SPENT ITS' ENTIRE LIFE THERE UP UNTIL WHEN I BOUGHT IT A FEW YEARS AGO. I WAS TOLD THERE WERE THREE OWNERS BEFORE ME. I DON'T KNOW THE ORIGINAL MILES, BUT MY EXPERIENCE WITH THESE CARS (I HAVE OWNED OVER ONE HUNDRED, ONE WITH 90 ORIGINAL MILES) LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A VERY LOW MILE CAR. THE SPEEDO CLUSTER IS A NEW OLD STOCK UNIT THAT NOW READS JUST 77 MILES. ONE THING THAT MAKES THIS CAR SO SPECIAL IS THAT IT WAS ORDERED AS THE "NO FRILLS" BASE SPORTSROOF INSTEAD OF THE MORE POPULAR MACH I. THE ORIGINAL OWNER WAS OBVIOUSLY LOOKING FOR A "SLEEPER" TO DO SOME OCCASIONAL DRAG RACING. THE ONLY PERFORMANCE OPTION LEFT TO BE DESIRED WOULD BE THE DRAG-PACK OPTION, BUT THE CARS' 3:50 GEARS ARE BETTER FOR GAS MILEAGE AND TOPEND PERFORMANCE. EVEN THOUGH THE OUTSIDE OF THIS CAR WAS RATHER PLAIN, ITS' VERMILLION INTERIOR WAS UPGRADED WITH THE MACH I SPORTS GROUP AND THE TOTALLY COOL FOLDDOWN SPORT DECK REAR SEAT. POWER STEERING, POWER FRONT DISC BRAKES, F60-15 INCH TIRES WITH RAISED WHITE LETTERS AND AN AM RADIO ROUNDED OUT THE OPTION LIST. PERHAPS THE COOLEST THING ABOUT THIS CAR IS THE FACTORY "EMINGER" INVOICE THAT HAS A HAND WRITTEN NOTE AUTHORIZING THAT IT WAS "OK TO GIVE A-WAY RACING MIRROR PER G. H. SCHROEDER." I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF EMINGER INVOICES, BUT NEVER ONE WITH THIS KIND OF HAND WRITTEN NOTE. ALL OTHER NON-MACH I FASTBACK CARS CAME STANDARD WITH A SMALL CHROME DRIVER'S SIDE MIRROR AND NO PASSENGER SIDE MIRROR. THIS IS ANOTHER ONE OF THE MANY THINGS THAT SETS THIS CAR APART FROM THE REST. I CAN JUST SEE THE ORIGINAL BUYER ARGUING WITH THE DEALER ABOUT THAT DARN RACING SIDE MIRROR FOR WHICH HE HAD NO INTENTION OF PAYING EXTRA! PLEASE REVIEW ALL OF THE ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTATION I HAVE PROVIDED. YOU WILL NOTE THAT, IN ADDITION TO THE ORIGINAL FACTORY INVOICE AND THE MARTI REPORT, I HAVE POSTED PICTURES OF THE VIN #'S ON THE DASH, THE ENGINE BLOCK, THE TRANS, AND THE SHOCK TOWERS. I HAVE ALSO VERIFIED THAT THE REAREND IS ORIGINAL TO THE CAR. I ALSO PULLED THE VALVE COVERS AND VERIFIED THAT THE CYLINDER HEADS ARE ORIGINAL TO THE CAR. WHEN I GOT THIS CAR IT EVEN HAD ITS' ORIGINAL FRONT BUMPER. I POSTED PICS OF THE DATE CODES. THE ORIGINAL BUMPER WAS REPLACED DUE TO A SMALL BLEM, BUT IT WAS OTHERWISE MINT. I WILL INCLUDE IT WITH THE SALE. THIS IS BY FAR ONE OF THE CLEANEST BIG BODY MUSTANGS YOU WILL EVER FIND. IT HAS NEVER HAD ANY KIND OF RUST OR RUST REPAIR AND HAS NEVER BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENTS. EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF SHEET METAL IS ORIGINAL TO THIS CAR. THE HOOD, THE FENDERS, THE DOORS, THE QUARTER PANELS, THE TAILLIGHT PANEL, THE INTERIOR FLOORS, THE TRUNK FLOOR AND DROPOFFS, THE DECK LID, AND THE FRONT AND REAR VALANCES ARE ALL ORIGINAL TO THE CAR. IT JUST RECEIVED A NO EXPENSE SPARED SHOW QUALITY PAINT JOB IN ITS' ORIGINAL BRIGHT RED COLOR. THE TRIM, BUMPERS, DOOR HANDLES, WEATHERSTRIPPING, SEALS, ETC. WERE ALL REPLACED WHEN THE CAR WAS PAINTED. ALL OF THE GLASS IS IN MINT CONDITION. A LOT OF NOS PARTS AND DETAILING WENT INTO THE RESTORATION OF THIS CAR, AND I THINK IT SHOWS IN THE PHOTOS. THE ORIGINAL NUMBERS MATCHING MOTOR WAS REBUILT BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER USING ALL THE BEST COMPONENTS AND A FEW PERFORMANCE MODS, SUCH AS A HIGHER LIFT CAM, FORGED PISTONS, AND HOOKER SUPER COMP HEADERS THAT EXIT INTO A CUSTOM EXHAUST SYSTEM WITH AN EQUALIZER PIPE AND THE CORRECT FACTORY TURNDOWNS. THE INTAKE WAS SWAPPED FOR A SUPER COBRA JET (HOLLEY) UNIT AND THE CARB IS A NEW STREET AVENGER UNIT THAT IS TUNED TO THIS CAR. THE DISTRIBUTOR IS A CORRECT LOOKING DOOF AUTOLITE UNIT BUT THE POINTS WERE SWAPPED FOR A PERTRONIX IGNITION. PARTS THAT ARE KNOWN TO BE ORIGINAL INCLUDE THE VALVE COVERS, THE ALTERNATOR (WOW!!), THE CARTER "X" FUEL PUMP, THE AIR CLEANER BASE AND SEAL, THE DIPSTICK, THE FAN BLADE, THE PULLEYS, THE OIL PAN AND THE ULTRA RARE FIBERGLASS "BARNUM BROTHERS" FAN SHROUD THAT IS IN "AS NEW" CONDITION, WITH NO REPAIRS OF ANY KIND. THE REV LIMITER IS A DUMMY UNIT, AND THE RADIATOR APPEARS TO BE A CORRECT LOOKING RECORED UNIT. THE HOOD SPRINGS ARE THE CORRECT "SQUARE" TYPE, AND ALL THE BELTS AND HOSES ARE NEW REPRO UNITS. THE UNDERCARRIAGE AND SUSPENSION ARE HIGHLY DETAILED WITH ALL THE CORRECT FACTORY PAINT DAUBS AND OVERSPRAY PATTERNS. PRIOR TO DETAILING, THE REAR SPRINGS HAD THEIR ORIGINAL PAINT MARKINGS, AS DID THE DRIVESHAFT AND THE TRANSMISSION. I TOOK PHOTOS OF ALL THESE COMPONENTS PRIOR TO DETAILING THEM. EVEN THE RADIATOR SUPPORT HAD MARKINGS THAT WERE STILL VISABLE AND DUPLICATED. THE ORIGINAL SHIFTER AND REVERSE LOCK-OUT ROD ARE STILL IN PLACE, AS IS THE EXTRA LARGE AND VERY RARE FACTORY REAR SWAY BAR. THE WHEELS AND TIRES WERE UPGRADED WITH NEW MAGNUM 500'S AND FIRESTONE INDY 500'S. THE RIDE IS VERY NICE, WITH NO BUMPS OR RATTLES, AND THE CAR TRACKS STRAIGHT DOWN THE ROAD. THE INTERIOR IS VERY NICE WITH A NEW HEADLINER AND CUSTOM SEATCOVERS. I PULLED UP THE CARPET AND TOOK PICS OF THE FLOOR WHICH SHOW FLAWLESS FACTORY RED PAINT. EVEN THE ORIGINAL PAINT ON THE ROOF UNDER THE HEADLINER LOOKS LIKE IT WAS PAINTED YESTERDAY (WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU EXPECT FROM A LOW MILEAGE CAR THAT WAS KEPT INSIDE IN A DRY CLIMATE ITS' ENTIRE LIFE?)! YOU WON'T FIND THIS WITH NORTHERN CARS EXPOSED TO SALT, OR SOUTHERN CARS EXPOSED TO RAIN. THE CORRECT SHORT CONSOLETTE IS IN PLACE WITH THE HARD TO FIND ORIGINAL SHIFTER COVER. THE SHIFTER ARM WAS RECROMED AND THE HANDLE IS AN NOS UNIT WITH THE CORRECT SET SCREW AND "OPEN 4." THE AM RADIO WAS SWAPPED FOR AN NOS AM/FM UNIT. THE TRUNK IS HIGHLY DETAILED WITH THE CORRECT JACK, HANDLE, CANISTER, AND SPACESAVER SPARE THAT HAS NEVER BEEN ON THE GROUND. ALL OF THE ORIGINAL BOLTS AND BRACKETS WERE SENT OUT AND REPLATED PRIOR TO REASSEMBLY. EVERYTHING WORKS AS IT SHOULD, INCLUDING THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS, TURN SIGNALS, REVERSE LIGHTS, AND HORN. AS FOR PERFORMANCE, I CAN ONLY SAY ONE THING: THIS CAR IS A BLAST TO DRIVE!! IT IS BY FAR THE FASTEST CAR I HAVE EVER DRIVEN (FASTER EVEN THAN ANY BOSS 351 I HAVE OWNED). WHEN YOU LAY THE GAS PEDAL DOWN, IT SEEMS ENDLESS TO THE FLOOR. YOU CAN LIGHT UP THE TIRES AT JUST ABOUT ANY SPEED. IT IS LITERALLY THE ONLY CAR I HAVE BEEN AFRAID TO DRIVE TO ITS' LIMITS. THE ONLY NEGATIVE I COULD MENTION IS THAT IT HAS A RACING CLUTCH THAT IS VERY STIFF. IF YOU PLAN ON DRIVING IN A LOT OF STOP AND GO TRAFFIC, I WOULD DEFINITELY CHANGE OUT THE CLUTCH. I CAN'T SAY IF THE TRANS HAS BEEN REBUILT, BUT IT SHIFTS TIGHT AND SMOOTH. THERE ARE NO UNUSUAL NOISES IN THE DRIVETRAIN, AND THERE ARE NO LEAKS OR SMOKE OF ANY KIND. THIS CAR WAS MADE TO BE DRIVEN, BUT WOULD STILL SHOW VERY WELL AT ANY MCA EVENT. IT MIGHT IN FACT BE A LITTLE BIT OVER RESTORED FOR CONCOURSE COMPETITION. THIS IS A BLUE CHIP INVESTMENT THAT SHOULD APPRECIATE IN VALUE. IT MAY NOT BE A HEMI CUDA, BUT YOU CAN OWN IT FOR ABOUT A FIFTH OF THE PRICE. THE FACTORY INVOICE AND MARTI REPORT GO WITH THE CAR.
